Amercian Idol 3/27-3/28

Sigh.

I’ll have to assume, because I’ve never watched it before, that previous seasons were way, way better than this. Right?

Boy, howdy. At this point there’s not much reason to watch except to see what stupid outfits we’re going to see next.

I’ll call this the second-worst group. Season 3 was sorely lacking in talent.
Disclaimer: I didn’t watch Season 1

There are always a few standouts and the rest are just cannon fodder. The cannon fodder occasionally last longer than they should and a standout goes home too early. The only season so far where the three best performers made it to the final three was season two*. The problem with the past couple episodes is that the standouts even seem to have lost their oomph (except for Jordin who has taken the opportunity and run with it). Maybe Chris S. going home will shake some sense into Melinda, Lakisha and Blake to step it up a bit.

*I can’t even remember the 3rd person in the final 3 of the Bo Bice/Carrie Underwood season.

Vonzell Solomon, sometimes called “Baby V” or (by Seacrest only, IIRC) “The Vonz.”

Sigh. This is the point at which departures start to hurt. The contestants have been around long enough that you’ve gotten used to them, like characters on a scripted show.

It was time for Chris to go. Looking back, I’m surprised they let anyone so stubborn into the semis at all. He was too proud of being a square peg, and he didn’t seem to care enough about keeping himself in the competition, so why should I care? I liked him, and I love his voice, but he was just taking up space in the competition. If you’ll pardon the expression.

Meanwhile, I made a bet with Mr. Rilch, before we knew this week’s results. If Sanjaya gets to sixth place, he owes me a scoop at Coldstone’s. If he goes out before sixth place, Coldstone’s is on me. (If he gets beyond sixth, we’ll just get Coldstone’s. And a fifth of Jack.)

I’m probably not going to bother watching my TiVo of this episode.

Please tell me Phil didn’t “Wooooo!” I can take another week of his creepiness as long as the “Woooo” got punched out of him this week.

DialIdol did better this week than a couple of weeks ago, when all of bottom three were in the top half of their rankings, and on was in their top three, predicted to be “safe”.

As long as Sanjaya remains on the show at all, can’t we just acknowledge that, no matter what, we’re all losers, and just skip right to the Jack part? Or SoCo, or peach schnapps right out of the bottle. You know, whatever.

I hate to be so down on the kid, because he seems like a nice enough kid, but … if I still had any faith in the democratic process before, I certainly wouldn’t at this point.

He WAS a nice enough kid. It seems like instead of looking uncomfortable about remaining in the competition when everyone thinks he should go home, he’s being a bratty teenager and seems to enjoy the fact that he’s somehow putting one over on the judges.

That’s how I see it anyway. I don’t like him anymore.

No sweat.

Fair enough. The way I see it, he’s 17, and I don’t know many 17-year-olds who don’t behave in a similar fashion when they get the chance. I know I did. (Of course, that was half my life ago, and I now see the error of my ways. Now I complain about that sort of behavior on Internet message boards. ) I will say this, though: Sanjaya really makes me miss John Stevens and Kevin Covais. They weren’t the best singers, either, but at least they were well-behaved.

As far as I’m concerned, Sanjaya isn’t “doing” anything but basking in the moment. He sucks, he knows it, and he knows the American Public is having fun fucking with American Idol.

I can see him getting kicked off in the next few weeks and going on to be a Teeny-bopper Idol and becoming a gajillionaire. I lost faith in America’s taste in music a long time ago.

I was rather sorry to see Chris go, even though he never had a chance. He seems like a nice guy.

I wish they’d let us vote on the clothes. They need a good fashion consultant.

Interesting, but I’m not sure he’s really conscious of his place in all this. Sanjaya’s look for the last performance seemed to be inspired by Gwen’s No Doubt bandmates. Perhaps the attitude was likewise inspired by their and her success. I mean, love her or hate her, Gwen Stefani’s gimmick has been to revel in eccentricity and style. However, IMHO, she’s self-aware enough to latch onto trends her listening public can get into. (Harajuku style and high-low dressing spring to mind.) Sanjaya’s just a kid who sees this and thinks, “me too!” without realizing that once something’s been done, you’re just a hanger-on and not an innovator.

Amen! What’s with all the gray this year? And the ill-fitting dresses? Their stylists need a sound boxing around the ears. I mean, they’re making *Blake *look bad, and that’s got to be a challenge.

The best part of last night’s show was when Ryan said something to the effect of, “We’ll see who joins Phil and Stacey in the bottom three.” Totally cracked me up.

Not too surprised to see Sligh go. He’d kind of lost his sparkle in the last couple of weeks.

I think I’m going to have to start doing what I did the year I wanted Kim Caldwell to go away: vote for everyone but the contestant I hate (that’d be Sanjaya, in case anyone doubted it). If he makes it much further I’m afraid I’ll have to stop watching. For example, if someone like Jordin or Blake goes home in the next couple of weeks while he stays, I’m done.

Sligh was a total disappointment to me… he started off quirky, bold, sarcastic, funny, interesting, and yet with a nice soul-ful voice that sounded great.

He never lived up to his audition…

Diana DiGarmo was 16 and had a lot of poise. Granted she was a Disney Stepford-teen but still.

This has to be it for Sanjaya. Next week is Tony Bennett songs (go Melinda) and he can only crash and burn on that.

Actually I can see it keeping him on life support. His voice is totally easy listening. (Shame John Stevens couldn’t have had a Tony Bennett session.)

If it gets down to Sanjaya, Lakisha, Jordin, Blake and Melinda (the last four being clearly the intention of the Divinity), THEN I will vote for the first time ever as that’s when Sanji has to go. I don’t think that Chris S. was the victim of voter fraud as much as he’s just not been that good for the past few weeks and (rightly or wrongly in how much difference it makes) he has no sex appeal; while I don’t think Sanjaya’s sexy (too skinny, too young, too… Sanjaya) I can definitely see why tween girls think so (exoticism without danger or even eroticism) and he is talented, just not in pop. As I’ve said before, I can see him ruling a decent university’s musical theater offerings and maybe having a career on Broadway even, but he’ll never share a bill with Blake after the Idol Tour.

Blake… why is he so damned sexy? He’s got a huge butt, weird teeth, seems like a vapid brat (not evil, but just a bit self absorbed) off stage, but damn I’d do him. (I also get a big gay vibe from him, which means that odds are we will end up having an affair of course whereas if he were straight it would just be a 20% chance; he says he’s straight but then Idol historically discourages openly gay contestants). Apologies if it’s already been posted somewhere, but has anybody seen this very funny and cute video by one of Blake’s friends who was in the audience?

Phil- it’s amazing how much cuter he is when he wears a cap. Bald men can certainly be hot (Chris D. from last season) but his dome’s so shiny it’s a distraction. With the cap you notice his beautiful eyes. He still moves like he’s afraid Reverend Parris is watching but his voice is okay and his eyes are pretty enough (and the “give it up” gesture was cute and endearing as he crossed the stage to the Circle of Shame) that I’m glad he got a reprieve. I’d keep him around longer than I would Sanjaya, Haley, Gina, and Chris R. in that order probably, but I’d certainly never buy his album.

All in all the weakest link in the series so far, this week was. While I like Tony Bennett I really wish they’d just let the contestants have an anything goes week (and I don’t mean Cole Porter- though actually I’d like that better than Bennett and I bet Lakish could tear up Miss Otis Regrets and Blake could beatbox the hell out of Under My Skin).

PS- Speaking of showtunes and Sanjaya, did his hair and, ahem, dance remind anybody else of the “chicken hats” from Pick a Little Talk a Little?

Sanjaya sucks but Simon making the comment that he would quit if Sanjaya wins is idiotic. The judges put him through. Out of the thousands of people available, he was one of the best? Did he suddenly go from great to horrible only when America started voting? The judges need to STFU and realize they are the main reason he is still around. Same goes for Kevin last season or the red haired kid a couple of seasons ago. I hope he wins the damn competition because they keep putting people through to mock then get pissed when they hang around. Hell, I’m going to start voting for him next week.

Please don’t.

Sanjaya and Stevens are two reasons I want to see the age limit raised to 18. This is no place for high schoolers. (True, Jordin’s only 17, but she’s the exception, and even she will be a lot better at 20 probably.)

I can’t believe they have Gina and Haley but sent the- can’t remember her name, but Janis Joplinish auditionee from, I believe, B’ham- home. She had a really unique voice and sexy persona.

I think it’s also because his head is very, very pale and his eyebrows are very, very dark. Daughtry had a bit of a tan, or something, but whatever it was, he never looked so white as to be almost phosphorescent, like Phil does. Plus, Daughtry had a much more “rounded” head, and not so much of a schwa-headed-alien-head shape.

I swear to God that Phil glows in the dark. It’s creepy.
