Yeah. It’s this year’s Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don’t. Last year was the “You can’t sing iconic songs because they’ll overshadow you, unless you are Adam Lambert in which case we will love the initiative”.
The only “rule” in AI is that if it works, it works, and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. It’s only when the judges are trying to make cohesion and sense out of their decisions that it gets weird, because there really is no logic to it.
I am aghast that a show that drew literally tens of thousands of auditioners has ended up with such an mediocre group of contestants. The women were bad enough, but I swear, if I were out at a bar or some such place, and any one of the first ten of the guys came out and started singing like that, well, I’d give them a max of 30 seconds of attention and then go back to chatting with my table mates.
They were just utterly UNINTERESTING to me.
I have to think stage fright plays a big role. I’m not sure how they should fix that, though.
DialIdol has the bottom 10 with virtually the same score (both the boys and the girls).
#1 on both lists has about 4 times the score as #2 which has about twice the score as #3.
I find it hard to believe that #1 has 8 times the score as #3.
IIRC, the 12th singer for both the boys and girls is #1 on dial idol, and the 11th singer is #2 on dial idol.
I’m sure they’re terribly nervous every year, but this is the first year that I’ve really noticed it. I think John Park suffered the most from it - I think he has the best voice on the show this year, but his nerves were just killing his ability to sing.
Gotta agree with the consensus here that overall this is a pretty boring group. I thought Lee was a pleasant surprise - I hadn’t caught him in any of the earlier episodes. On the other hand, I really didn’t enjoy Neck Tat’s performance last night. Acoustic Fall Out Boy just doesn’t work for me.
Well, we thought two years ago was boring til the Cook magic happened.
Am i the only one who wonders why kara sprayed a whole bottle of self tanner on her face?
Just for the record, Kara’s drooling over Naked Cowboy isn’t at all skeevy, since it meets the universal law: Age / 2 + 7
Kara’s age = 40
40/2+7 = 27
Naked Cowboy’s Age = 27
27=27

Ya know, I just did a search because all of the latest “this year sucks” posts rang a bell with me. See, I’ve watch from the beginning and there has only been one year that sucked so bad that I stopped watching and that was last year. And it wasn’t that it sucked so bad either. It was that pop music went to a place that I just don’t want to go.
For the record, I can not stand those bang-haired, rail-thin, oh-so-hip guys that flooded last year. The number one and two guys just left me cold. I didn’t come to threads to complain about how bad Idol has gotten. I just stopped watching.
So any way, I did a search and I found that the first Oh My God, Idol Is So Terrible This Year posts started in-- drum-roll, please-- season three.
Go search yourself. Every season since season three is filled with post about how the talent this year is the worst talent EVA!!! For the first month or so. Now, it’s not always the same people saying this. There are always new voices chiming in on the death of AI. But if you search like I did, you do begin to see a pattern.
And if you search like I did, you’ll see some of the same folks saying the same things. I wasn’t gonna name names but. . . seriously Dio, every year can’t be the worst year ever. Yeah, that’s right. I’m calling you out specifically only because you sorta stand out with your very biting and wicked slams. I sorta like them, actually. They make me laugh. But ya gotta chose a ONE season to be the worst.
I think I only noticed this because, like I said, I was more into the election and totally skipped AI last season, so it was striking this season how things stayed the same. And even though I called out Dio specifically, he isn’t the only one, just the most eye-catching.
O.K., I’m dropping this turd here and never mentioning this again. Just look inside yourselves people with the help of the search function and see what I have seen and know that everything old is new again.
Already blew some points in the pool. Oh well, long ways to go.

Maybe so, Biggirl, but here is more of an eye-opener: It’s an article from the New York Post with videos of each of the first “live” performances from the previous AI winners. Quite revelatory to see how good they all are. Now, personally I don’t even like Ruben, David C., Kris and Jordin (I was rooting for Clay, Adam and Melinda – don’t remember David’s year). But each one of 'em showed much, much, much more talent than every single one of the mediocrities in this year’s top 24. I’d choose Ruben, David, Kris and Jordin over any of the bleh contestants I saw this week.
That’s not to say that someone can’t improve from these early performances. I sure hope someone steps up to the plate. But looking back, I’d take even the runners-up like Lakiesha, Trenyce, Frenchie, even freakin’ Carly Smithson or Jasmine Trias or Diana DeGarmo … all of them were better than everyone here!
BTW, though I think Dio’s posts are a bit drama-queeny, there’s no real disconnect between his thinking last year or the year before was THE WORST!!!11 and then thinking that this year is THE WORST!!!11. Might just prove how incredibly bad this year is… that it’s even worse than his previous WORST!!!111 choice. 
Point taken, but I also usually have at least some favorites every year, and thre are also usually some characters, even if I don’t like them.
This year seems to me like by far the least interesting. There isn’t even a good villain, or good Sanjaya-style trainwreck.
There really are a larger number than usual of completely forgettable, colorless performers this year. I don’t think I would say any of them are terrible exactly, they’re just…so…boring.
The Lizard King just threw the judges under the bus.
What happened? The sound went off during a cutaway after they said Tyler was leaving. Did he swear?
I’m thrilled that Ashley is gone. She seemed like such a tremendous bitch I was sure she’d make it to top 10 at least.
Sad about the boys. Didn’t know Joe, but thought there were worse singers, and I wanted to see what Tyler could do, because I liked his audition so much.
The girls have so many blah performers, and these were just two of them. Maybe not the worst, but definitely not top 12 material, so who cares the order on them.
Kinda shocking results, especially on the girl side, where two of the prettiest girls are now gone.
Tyler blaming the judges was a total dick move.
I missed the results show. I thought it was on a 8 pm cst, not 7 pm cst. I watched Survivor.
I see that Tyler and Ashley are gone. Who were the other two voted out?
Forgot to mention that was one of my favorite group sings in a long time. I think this group is a lot better when the pressure is off. That, or they suck so much that they lip-synched it, which is probably more likely.
