Remember Jordan Sparks? She tried out in one city and didn’t make it past the first cut- being listened to by some 20-something producer. Then she went to the next city’s audition, made it through, got on the show, and won. You have to wonder how many other Jordan Sparks are out there.
By the way, during the whole “What would like to see Didi do?” conversation, I was really hoping Ellen would respond with “Well, if we have a Police week, I’d like to see Didi do De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da”.
The former country gal is actually accustomed to the urban life, as she’s lived in Chicago for a number of years, playing the guitar, building a career as a folk singer and raising a little boy.
Tim’s really not such a bad singer within his stylistic channel. Unfortunately that would be the Pat Boone, Lawrence Welk, 40s-50s clean cut all American boy band, nothing scary or adventurous channel.
Glad to see Paige leave, Tim will or should be next, I like Andrew a little more than most of you but he’s not in the top four.
When Didi was screaming out “You’re No Good” I was thinking the same thing that Simon actually said.
It occurred to me that regardless of how good the song is or how perfect it is for the contestant …maybe they should avoid songs whose title and/or lyrics make it just too easy for your detractors if you have an off night.
Paige was pushing that envelope with “Against All Odds” and I would further suggest that the songs “Leaving on a Jet Plane”, Michael Jackson’s “Bad” and Chris Daughtry’s “Home” be avoided for the same reason.
And this week’s show was just lame in general. So bad that I wondered if they were having technical difficulties with monitor system that allows the singers to hear themselves.
Crystal’s Me and Bobby McGee was pretty good …but are they making them limit their performances to one minute of less, it was like she sang the first verse and the finish and the short length disturbed me.
It was a blessing for most of the other performances however
I didn’t really focus on this until sometime in the middle, but didn’t they just have eleven songs, only one of which was from the current millennium. I don’t think that any of them were even from the '90’s, with the next freshest being Huey Lewis and the News from the '80’s. The rest of them may have even been from the '70’s or before.
I know that rights limitations prevent them from picking any of the hundreds of number 1 hits from the last 40+ years, but the range of songs that they ended up was just crazy.
Jumping right into the fray with my first post! Happy to see the David Cook love here (please don’t disabuse me of this notion. I’m happy in Cooklandia.) and agree with those who’ve said this season is just horrendous.
The only one I’m interested in following is Siobhan because she’s dorky and cute and takes chances. (And yes, you can stop with the screaming ANYtime, sweetie.) Clearly, Crystal makes it look easy but I’m bored with that style and hope she changes it up this coming week.
I’m not even going to go into the Miley pit 'o hell but really, how much “wisdom” can she possibly bring to things? She’s 17, FFS! I’ve never had the mis-fortune (until now) to see her “perform” and it was just as awful as I thought it would be. Thank goodness that I have a Twitter party every week because I could not get through this without the snark.
If you miss stuff, the recaps by Jacob over on Televsion without Pity are hilarious. I used to despise him during the DC season because he was always telling us to quit fangirling in the Cook thread and many, MANY of us got banned there on whatever whim he had that day but apart from all that, he does do great recaps. I like him much better when I can be more objective.
(And if you guys ever get a chance to check out DC live, I recommend it. He and his band put on a great show and sound 100x better than he does on the (IMO very sterile) record. /fangirlery)
Next week’s theme is R&B Soul with a leaked song list of mostly standards, so expect Aretha, Marvin, etc. I saw “Easy,” on the list, I’d love for somebody to Faith No More that tune, but I’m not sure anyone has the chops of Mike Patton (who has some kind of supernatural range, seriously, like four octaves, and can take on all kinds of vocal persona that give a casual listener the impression there are several people singing.)
I just got chills imagining someone taking on Prince’s “Solo.” Talk about range! I don’t think anyone but Siobhan has a chance of handling that song.
(Sorry, I can’t find it to link to. It’s from the “Come” album.)
I suppose; I get all excited, then am reminded that it isn’t all songs of all time that they choose from.
My picks -
Crystal - What she’ll probably do - “(Sittin on) The Dock of the Bay” – Otis Redding. She should do “Umbrella” by Rihanna and really rock it out.
Cruisin’ – Smokey Robinson - I’d like Siobhan to do this.
“Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” – The Temptations - I call Big Mike for this. I think he would also do a good job on “Let’s Groove” by Earth, Wind and Fire.
The brunette blank space on stage will probably do “Un-Break My Heart” by Toni Braxton, since she’s so in love with singing low.
I want Casey James to do “Mustang Sally” by Wilson Pickett.
Oh, no - these two songs are on the list - “Vision of Love” and “We Belong Together” – Maria Carey; what are the odds that one of the guys will sing one of these songs? Tim Urban and Andrew Garcia might have to fight over them.
I admit that my knowledge doesn’t run very deep on this stuff, but I think there should have been more Sam Cooke tunes, though. The guy really has written some lovely songs OTHER than “A Change is Gonna Come,” and which can truly test the mettle of a singer.
Agree that “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” is a likely pick for Crystal. Preemptively disagree that it’s an easy song to sing, or that choosing it makes her a lazy bitch who should be physically assaulted for singing it.
