American Idol 4/10-4/11

McNew, my condolences on the loss of Haley. Truly, she was taken from us too soon.

The telling moment was last week’s show, where despite seemingly lackluster performances, Jordin, Lakisha and Melinda were the top three. So it shall remain, with Jordin possibly beating out Lakisha to go against Melinda in the final.

The future eliminees will go:

7 Phil
6 Chris
5 Sanjaya
4 Blake
3 Lakisha
2 Jordin
1 Melinda will be the new idol.

Jordin will have a very successful career as well, and maybe Lakisha too. Sanjaya will sell some records for awhile, and Blake, being a wavery-pitched white beatboxer in 2007, will sink without a trace after a good-selling debut leads to media overexposure revealing his insufferable personality.

I’m so happy that Haley is finally gone! She should have been out a long time ago. I will say that I never thought I’d be wishing for someone to be gone before Sanjaya. It would have been fun, though, if the one week Sanjaya actually deserved to stay he got voted off instead of someone who performed worse than him.

Thanks for being there for me, DB. Certain parts of her will live on in my memory.

Wait- she sings?

Kelly and Justin?

I think he has more of an NSYNC Timberlake vibe. Definately not a solo career Timberlake vibe.

I did think of Justin, but I was under the impression that he’s mixed.

Elton John too. Philadelphia Freedom and Bennie and the Jets both crossed over with great success.

I am disappointed. I wanted controversy! Instead the expected bottom three and someone who I thought would be gone before the final 10 finally gets the boot.

By Kathie Lee, I’ll not miss you. Not even your legs.

So true… however, I am giving away my $1,000,000 idea: Create the Haley Scarnato Leg Lamp, a’la Christmas Story/Jean Shepherd. Make the skirt the shade and the gams the gams, lose the stocking…

I just find him completely, actively unattractive. He looks smarmy to me. And I don’t like his voice. I can’t believe he’s made it this far. I though Haley handled herself well after the elimination. Good for her.

What he said. Blake is meh. I’m sick of men singing like boys. I’d love to hear an actual baritone - I enjoyed Taylor because he sounded male for a change.

Yeah, Chris rubs me the wrong way and I share the visceral hatred for Lakisha. I respect her voice but ugh.

In re the judges letting Sanjaya through to the top 24; I’ll say it again, his voice sounded better when not overwhelmed by the band and large stage. It has been amusing to see a formerly self-effacing supposedly shy boy come out of his shell.

It was also funny to see his sister whooping it up when he was safe and then pretending to be sympathetic when the group aaaawed that Chris was in the bottom three.

No worries about country week. The mentor is Martina McBride and she’s come so far over to the pop side that there shouldn’t be much twanginess.

My picks:

Melinda - yeah, Crazy
Lakisha - Redneck Woman
Sanjaya - Redneck Woman
Chris - I assume something like What Hurts the Most or a Keith Urban tune–yawn
Blake - 800-Pound Jesus just for fun
Phil - reprise of I Need You --ack
Jordin - I Will Always Love You because she did that other sad song so well

Sympathetic? I thought she looked annoyed.

Regarding Chris, my wife says he has a certain “smoldering confidence” that she finds attractive. I like him partly because he’s unpretentious. He just does the best he can with what he has, and he takes criticism well. He also responds well to the mentors, taking to heart their suggestions and at least trying to incorporate them.

I never liked dry ice, erm, I mean boy-band voices, and I don’t like his. But then, I don’t like the voices of a lot of singers that I enjoy seeing. I like how Chris carries himself, and that can make for successful tours and videos.

Don’t forget that at least a couple of the songs will not be country songs at all but will have once been covered by a country singer.

I think Phil will do Johnny Cash because I think he thinks he’s got the balls for it. Of course it will be his downfall but we already know he’s going home next week so he’s going to try and wow us and fail miserably. Oh, and he’ll wear a cowboy hat which will sit too low on his head because he doesn’t have any hair for it to sit on so we won’t be able to see his eyes.

I think Sanjaya will pick a classic slow ballady country song, probably another Patsy Cline and he’ll be safe yet again, unless the judges are really mean to Phil or Chris causing a wave of sympathy votes for them.

Jordin, Lakisha and Melinda will all do ballads. Yeah, I can see Melinda doing Crazy but if not she will pick some other song from the 1950’s. Jordin will be cute and will go back to curly hair for this show. Lakisha will borrow an outfit from Dolly Parton to emphasize the girls but she’ll cut out the back to emphasize the other girls.

Blake could either pick something classic or be the one who picks the rock song covered by a pop star.

Chris will pick something he can smarm to and make hand gestures about women. The judges will inexplicably like it.

“Trashy Women”?

“‘That ain’t no girl son, that’s a waitress in a Dolly Parton wig!’
I said, ‘I know, ain’t she cool? That’s the kind I dig!’”

The evening will not be complete until one of the girls covers, “The Night the Lights Went out in Georgia”.

And I, for one, will be disappointed if Sanjaya doesn’t wear a Nudie Suit. (Completely safe for work, you pervs! )

He could wear pigtails and a cowboy hat.

Oh, I just had an unpleasant flash of Jordin singing “Independence Day”. I like the song but it’s been overdone on AI.

Really? I’ve never considered that to be a “country” song, although the story/lyrics take place in the Deep South.

I admit it’s stretching the definition, but after the Gloria Estephanathon last time, I thought it could squeak by.
