American Idol 4/17

It might not be all that prevalent. I haven’t felt the urge to offer up that I like country, but I do. Not all of it, but then I don’t like all rock either. I think that sometimes, a post that comes across as, “Oh dear God, I hate country with the passion of a thousand suns. Why oh why am I forced to hear it! Why can’t someone turn off my television set!” — and then is pretty much repeated once per page or so — sounds like more thunder than is really there. I mean, who besides Diogenes has been all that worked up about it?

Clever maybe, but he said he picked this song becuase everyone is always talking about him so he figured he might as well sing about it. That could almost be considered renegeing. But, he did have a sense of humor.

I dislike most country. I can tolerate some of the more pop-like less twngy crossovers until they play the hell out of them so that’d you rather stab knitting needles in your ears then hear it again but that also applies to most popular songs that get the hell played out of them. I dislike the twangy “my girlfriend ran off with my dog and my pickup truck, damn I miss that dog and pickup truck!” songs. Strangely, I actually like some bluegrass instrumental stuff, perhaps because I like mandolins.

Anyway, I can tolerate one country themed show, but I hate when certain contestants keep finding ways to sing country songs all the time though and rarely get called on it. The problem with all the themes lately is they are just so lackluster and uninspired, it’s hard to get enthused about any of them.

I hate country crossover crap with the fire of a thousand suns. However, one of the presets on my radio is an AM station that does what they call Classic Country. They play some Dolly Parton for me once in a while, and sometimes I just listen to them because I get tired of the same old stuff on my rock stations. This morning they played a song that went something like, “My tears washed ‘I love you’ off the blackboard of my heart”. Now that’s entertainment! :smiley:

I could not believe Sanjaya got voted off I missed it. I heard it was pretty sad though. I was wondering why Blake was in the bottom. I know he will not be next week.

The only problem with Sanjaya being voted off is that now they have nothing to talk about on the show now. I think it will be a bit boring now.

A few thoughts:

Do people here really think Fergie sounded good, or is it just that the expectations were so low? Because she wouldn’t have made it past the AI auditions with that performance. Of course I’m biased since I read in tv guide that she actually recorded it 2 weeks ago so she wasn’t actually singing live or even in the studio last night. I did think that Martina sounded wonderful, though.

As for Jordin, she’s been my favorite since the beginning. I love how she smiles with her entire face. I guess nobody’s told her yet that she shouldn’t crinkle up her nose and eyes or she’ll get wrinkles. Anyway, I think she’s gorgeous and I love her voice.

Now for a brief grammar hijack:

nasal=adjective
nasally=adverb

Examples:

Your voice was nasal.
Your performance was nasal.
My singing style is nasal.
You have a nasal tone to your voice and I suggest an ENT consult.

versus

You sang nasally.
You performed nasally.
My preferred style is to sing nasally.
If you continue to think that singing nasally is a good thing, then I for one will not be voting for you.

To all AI judges and contestants: learn it, memorize it, and don’t mess it up again. Thank you.

End grammar hijack.

I’m glad Simon clarified his reaction, because it looked very bad.

I can’t believe that Blake was in the bottom 3. He’s my pick to win it all.

You have no idea how I jumped when I misread this as “country crossover rap” :eek:

If, and I’m just supposing here, but if folks tend to favor one gender as their favorite to vote for, Blake Chris and Phil are sharing a voting pool. Blake’s had better reviews from the judges, and until now has always been safe. The other two get sympathy from their fans for the ‘mean’ reviews they keep getting and have both been in the bottom, Phil more often than Chris.

So Phil and Chris fans were more scared their fave wouldn’t make it and voted more often than Blake fans, since he seemed to be out of danger. Happens every year, some consistently good contestant gets a scary trip to the bottom two or the big scandal of someone being voted off earlier than anyone figured possible, simply because the fans of the less-favored are desperately trying to keep them in.

I was hearing it more as “nasal-y” than “nasally” like smelly, wooly, crappy. That is, they were being cutesy with a word suffix rather than trying to use a real word, though it just happened to be a homophone to a real word.

Here you go.

I like Sanjaya- not as a singer, I just like him. Seems to have a nice personality, bright, sweet, all that. That said I’ll admit I wanted to go a little Don Corleone on Johnny Fontanne with him about his crying: "You can act like a man![slap-slap]

My favorite is Alan Jackson’s about the guy who is hanging out at the bar watching his recent ex dancing. “She’s Got the Rhythm (and I Got the Blues)”.

Yay, no more Sanjaya. Although I would have loved to see him beat out Chris just for how obnoxious Chris was this week.

Her name is Shyamali Malakar and apparently there’s at least a pic of her skimpily clad.

So who are the “two of the biggest names in music” who are going to sing a duet next week? (My guess: Luciana Pavoratti and Patty Duke [who had several bubble-gum hit singles in the early 60s] or Diana Ross and Topol.)

Captain & Tennille?

Michael Jackson and Liza Minelli?

Ferrante and Teicher?
Kate Smith and… Kate Smith?

Oh, wait, the two biggest NAMES, I know who they mean!

Aroobnahoova “Kenny” Werknerganjimellentriever-SteinStien.

I love that guy.

Didn’t Seacrest mention Bono several weeks ago as a potential guest? He might sing with Mary J. Blige or Alicia Keys. He has before.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Cowboy Troy.
::d&r::

I like him; I think I Play Chicken With the Train is cool. (Yes, that’s Big and Rich singing backup)

Damn. I was going to mention him after the country rap comment. Did you catch that Rich and Troy were at Idol’s Wednesday show? I swear that John Rich secretly (or not so secretly I guess) controls all of country music from a secret volcano lair somewhere.

Holy crap, that’s funny! And actually listenable…I love The Last Yee-Haw. You know, I may actually pick up this CD and stack it next to my Weird Al collection.
