American Idol 4/17

Why is Blake a default for the final two? Why can’t it be Jordin and Melinda?

Oh, it definitely could be Jordin and Melinda. I just think it’s more interesting when there’s a guy/girl final two. YMMV of course.

I’m sure your wit will still shine through, though its main target is now, sadly, but a memory… So long, Sanjaya. To quote the dying words of James T. Kirk, “It was fun.”

Wait! How 'bout Chris and Blake?

What was it? I only watched the last five minutes or so.

Funny how a bit of accidental editing that makes Simon look bad is immediately rescinded the next day when the show pretty much builds the first half of the season around purposeful editing that makes people look like schmucks.

Simon and Chris were arguing about nasally being a type of singing. Simon turned and began talking to Paula about it, and said something like, “I just don’t get it. Nasally is a type of singing now?” He then shot a “whatever” look toward Chris. While Simon and Paula were talking, Chris gave his shout out to the people at Va. Tech. Unfortunately, Simon’s “look” coincided with the end of Chris’s comments and the camera cut from Chris to Simon right at that moment. Simon didn’t hear what Chris had said and the audience didn’t hear what Simon had said. Simon said last night that he had no intention of disrespecting the people who were killed or their families, and felt terrible about what happened.

Nutshell version:

On Tuesday night, the director had cued a camera at just about the worst possible moment. Chris was expressing his condolences to the victims and families at Virginia Tech when suddenly the snarling face of Simon appeared on screen. It was only a flash though, as the director no doubt realized, “Oh my God, I fucking hate directing live TV!” and cued away quickly. It happened right after the exchange between Simon and Chris about nasal being a singing style.

But the bell had been rung, and all the buzz yesterday was about Simon wanting to diss Chris so badly that he was even willing to express contempt for the Virginia Tech victims. Hearless bastard made a face when Chris called out to people from his state. It turned out, however, that the face wasn’t made at Chris, but at Paula.

So last night, they played the entire clip of the camera that had been cued. In a smaller window, they played a synchronized clip of Ryan interviewing Chris. Neither Paula nor Simon were listening to Ryan and Chris, but were discussing what Chris had said just before about nasal singing. Paula said something idiotic (her audio was muffled), and Simon made a face in response. Lo and behold, it was at that moment that Chris had just finished his shout-out, and the camera on Simon was cued.

Once that was all shown, Simon (seemingly on the verge of tears, frankly) made an impassioned plea. He said that he never responds to Internet rumors, but was making an exception in this case because it so gravely misrepresented reality. He made it plain that his heart goes out to the people in Virginia, and that it was a terrible tragedy. He seemed really angry and insulted about it, and declared that although he is perceived as “mean”, he has a good heart, and would never disparage people suffering with that sort of grief.

The crowd responded with cheers.

I missed the beginning. What did he say?

Thank you!

Ahh, thanks for that recap Lib I was only listening to the show with half an ear while doing stuff in the other room.

Blake, Jordin and Melinda have to be the final three. They’ve got the most talent, they’re likable and have reliable fan bases that are likely picking up more voters weekly as folks other favorites are being voted off. Too soon to guess which two will make the finale, though, there’s still plenty of time to do something like Fantasia’s “Summertime” or go the other way and screw up huge.

“Let’s give them something to talk about other than hair.” Very clever.

You and me both, brother. I’ve never understood the general country hate prevalent on this board and the specific hate for certain country singers just baffles me. McGraw’s version kicked the crap out of Adams’ (although neither version is particularly country in any fashion).

Wait, what? Cite (or at least decent search terms)?

I’m really putting my money on Jordin as the winner. I like Melinda, but I honestly think Jordin will pull ahead of her - I think Jordin skews younger and has a better chance to get the votes that Sanjaya has been getting (God, I feel dirty for comparing Jordin to Sanjaya). I’ve been saying Jordin for weeks now, but no one’s agreed with me :stuck_out_tongue: .

E.

Wait, what? I’ve been agreeing.

I’ve agreed for a couple weeks at least.

Then how do you explain his fifth place finish this week, in a field reduced to 7?

Everyone in this thread who thinks Blake has a real shot at this needs to turn their back to the TV while he’s singing next week.

He has neat ideas for how to perform songs, and then can’t pull them off.

This is why I should read the SDMB’s AI thread more. Within a group of friends, they’ve all argued with me that there’s no way Jordin can win.

I should be here, with people who think like me  .

E.

Exactly. Given that DialIdol’s margins of error are so wide as to be useless this year, we’ve had exactly two indications of Blake’s standing. This week, when he scored 5th out of 7, and two weeks ago when he scored 4th, 5th or 6th out of 9.

I doubt he’ll be around by the third Tuesday from now, never mind making it to the final 2.

Nikki McKibbon, from Season 1, was in the bottom 3 almost every week and she walked away with 3rd place.
