American Idol 4/17

I don’t know Blake’s song…is it supposed to sound like The Cure?

His singing and look were alright, though I was a bit distracted by the ballroom scene from **Labyrinth **running in my head. Maybe it’s just the lyrics, but “When the World Falls Down” seemed so similar to this number. Or maybe it’s just me, the Henson geek.

Just because I have to be, in some small way at least, negative about everybody… Blake needs an upper lip.

I think I liked Phil better than anybody. He’s country, apparently. Blake is still better, but it’s not his style. Since we all know it won’t be Sanjaya, Chris should go home.

Yeah, I think Chris is in trouble this week, also. I’m no expert (go check the Idol Elimination thread if you don’t believe me! I have ZERO points!), but I think LaKisha might be in trouble, too. And Phil, because why not?

**Phil ** did good tonight but it’s too little too late for me.

**Chris ** was just passable.

I just love** Jordin**. She did that song justice.

Christ on a cracker, **Sanjaya ** is just annoying as hell.

I thought Lakisha did better than the judges gave her credit for. She’s shoulders above both Chris and **Phil, ** IMO.

Melinda did great.

Blake started out great, but petered out at the end. Tim McGraw is popular because he looks great in a hat and blue jeans. Musically, he’s mediocre.
My ranking, from first to last.

Jordin
Melinda
Lakisha
Blake
Phil
Chris
Sanjaya

Does anybody watch the What the Buck? reviews on YouTube? It’s a bitchy gay guy who recaps American Idol as if it were the war in Iraq, but it’s (intentionally) hysterical. He dealt with the insincerity of Melinda’s criticical acceptance weeks ago with a huge “STOP IT!” (and of course his funniest moments are all dedicated to Sanjaya).

I didn’t have a problem with Chris’ shoutout. He’s from Va., and he obviously has a connection, so what’s the problem? Even Cowell made a comment. The others don’t have to, because they’re not from there.

Phil was actually really good, perhaps the best tonight, and I don’t even like him.

Jordin has amazing singing talent. She is so good, and so young.

Lakisha was horrible. What happened? I found her good but boring… today she was interesting, but for all the wrong reasons.

Sanjaya was really, really bad. I don’t think Cowell’s campaign is helping much. Prepubescent America hears mean ol’ Simon, and they hit the phones with a vengeance.

Melinda was good. Good and somewhat interesting. She’s got a schtick, and that’s the modest mousey thing. However, a lot of people are fairly stupid and want her to keep it up. Melinda’s pretty smart, in that respect.

Blake was fine, I guess, but nothing too exciting for me.

[ol][li]Jordin[/li][li]Melinda[/li][li]Blake[/li][li]Phil[/li][li]LaKisha[/li][li]Chris[/li][li]Sanjaya[/ol][/li]I don’t think Evel Knievel could’ve jumped the gap between Blake and Phil on the above list.

(Short post tonight…things to do)

I liked Jordin and Melinda. The rest were pretty bad. And I like pop country. I text-voted for Jordin about 30 times or so.

Melinda will have a great career no matter what. I believe Jordin will too. Only seventeen, and such presence! And a cute giggle.

But…but…I must know what activity you’d rather do than listen to Sanjaya! Stepping into a bear trap? Grinding broken light bulbs into your ears? Jumping out of a helicopter into a lake full of peckish alligators? Enquiring minds want to know!

There’s something distressing about how Lakisha and Blake’s teeth completely disappear when they sing. It disturbs me.

What the hell did they do to Phil tonight, break out the DullSkull? He actually appeared to be a moderately attractive adult male tonight instead of a shiny, glittery, bulb-headed, radioactive Bat Boy.

Unfortunately, his singing did nothing for me but my dog sure enjoyed it. Bis leaped into my lap as Phil started, made himself comfy with his hairy little head turned toward the tv screen and watched rapt until the song was over. Then the little turd jumped down and left the room and refused to come back to listen to anyone else.

I voted for the first time ever tonight, and got through a scary number of times for Jordin. I swear I will hunt down that creepy, camera-fucking pre-pubescent freak of nature [sub]uh, sanjaya in case that wasn’t clear[/sub] if he stays over Jordin.

steps up
Melinda is too boring for me. I don’t want her in the top two. I’d replace her with Jordin, who I think has a more interesting voice and personality. Melinda’s voice is technically good. Jordin’s voice carries emotional impact. Guess which one is more important to me? That said, this week is the only one so far where Melinda’s song hasn’t made me want to cry from boredom.

Hey, the guy was 100% incorrect. Guess he isn’t in the McBride inner circle.

  1. Melinda 10/10 (She can sing anything.)
  2. Jordan 9/10 (Wow. 17. Wow. I was actually on the verge of tears when she powered up at the end–I would kill to sing like that.)
  3. Phil 8/10 (And I don’t even like him. But he done pretty good.)
  4. Lakisha 7/10 (She’s actually starting to bug me. I don’t like songs about Jesus in the first place, and I dunno… didn’t like this one. She’s still a vocalist of note, however.)

And then…

Sanjaya. Oh, my. Sounds like my cousin Dave at a family reunion. Not in the same league as the others above.
Blake. That was awkward. Especially the up/down vocal parts. Not nailed, dude.
Chris. Like the guy from a season or two ago, Scott Savol, that he is in this competition at all astounds me. He has a forgettable-to-unpleasant voice, difficulty staying on pitch, and nasal isn’t a style, it’s… Oh, never mind. He’ll probably still be there next week. Too bad. I’d love to be in the same room with him as he hears tonight’s playback. Maybe then he can hear what I hear. That was awful; but I’ve never heard anything good from him yet. He makes my head hurt.

LaKisha’s song reminded me of the revolting glurge emails that I get emailed to me. I hated it so, so much. I can’t believe Chris said that “nasal” is a style of singing. Can he PLEASE GO AWAY NOW? Blake’s song had cheeseball lyrics but it sounded the least country of any of them so song-wise it was my favorite (I strongly dislike country. I used to say I hated it, but I’m trying to mellow on that because my boyfriend actually likes it) I agree that Blake’s mouth looks totally bizarre when he sings. He’s my favorite of the guys. Jordin is by far my favorite in this contest, though. Phil’s voice irritates me. Melinda bores the crap out of me. Sanjaya…needs to go away.

Blake’s face looks totally bizarre when he sings. Like he just opened a jar of spring snakes.

And could they make it any more obvious that they want the Sanjaya controversy to drive the show?

Melinda and Jordin were excellent. Blake was all right, Lakisha just okay, Chris R. dull, Phil duller, Sanjaya a complete disaster in every way he could be, and then some.

And his teeth freak me out for some reason. Strangely sexy guy, though (imo).

Up til now it’s been all fun and games with Sanjaya, but after this week it can’t go on. I really didn’t care whether he went before or after Gina, Haley, and others who either weren’t that good to begin with or who had (like Chris the Hutt) gotten boring. This week The Other Boring Chris should go- he’s had all these weeks and never proved a thing. Country Phil hopefully bought himself a stay of execution, but only for a week or at most two, because it’s been enough time to say this is clearly the exception rather than the rule. But before it gets down to the Big Four (the ones who can expect lucrative careers- LaKisha, Jordin, Blake, Melinda) Sanjaya Darkhorse has to go. Oh, I’ll miss him, I really will, it’s always cool seeing what he’s going to do to his head each week (though the Aunt Jemima in Boys Don’t Cry look confused me), but now it’s time for the big dogs and they don’t need anyone to draw fire. After this week I think we’ll know whether it’s just the tweeners keeping him or if the alleged VFTW/Stern/Indian-American conspiracy is really working.

LaKisha must have been feeling bad tonight because she wasn’t herself at all.

Melinda- great, but she still needs good guidance careerwise in what to choose. It’s odd that tonight without trying she looked far sexier than she did last week with trying.

Blake- if he is (as he asserts with increasing frequency) straight then he’s going to have no shortage of nookie from now on. If he’s closeted (as rumored, but then it’s rumored about everybody from Pope Benedict to the cast of Bonanza) he’s going to have a pretty major scandal cause I don’t think he’s gonna be outed quicker than Clay was.

Jordin- whenever I make comments about Sanjaya only being 17 I’m reminded that so is Jordin. I still think they should raise the age limit to at least 18, though.
I was surprised to learn Sanjaya has a GED because he dropped out of school to focus on his music career. I can’t believe his mom would let him do that. (He also grew up on welfare and in subsidized housing for a while, which surprises me- I’d have guessed at least upper middle class.) If his family has any ethics and sense they’ll invest the money from the tour for him (though he’ll be 18 before it’s over) and he can study voice in college, cause I honestly think he could make it on Broadway (the first Indian-American male Mama Rose perhaps) but not yet and not in pop.

Is it me or is this the most boring season in years? Admittedly I didn’t watch it much last year, but it just seems they let through way too many mediocrities. Maybe they should stop with the freaks and geeks auditions in front of Paula/Randy/Simon so they can better select from the real best of the best.

I swear I had to check the date of the thread more than once reading through this. Were some of you watching the same show I was?

The worst: Sanjaya, as per usual, but this week, he chose a song that couldn’t be more wrong for his style of singing, and then he didn’t even try to sing it.

Second worst: Chris. We couldn’t even remember his name at the top of the show. He can’t sing, he can’t perform.

Third Worst: Blake. Where the hell is the love coming from? He sang about 8 bars in the middle where he didn’t manage to hit a single note correctly in any of them. He imagines himself a great song re-interpreter, but that only works if you can actually sing, dammit!

Middle of the pack: Lakisha. She’s really slipping, becoming too full of herself, although she at least tried to change it up a little this week.

Third best: Phil. Look, the only country song I think I ever came in from another room to hear is Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band. I hate country. Doesn’t matter. Phil was unmitigatedly good in his performance tonight. He should cover the chrome dome with Garth Brooks’ hat and he’ll never see the bottom three again. Last week I had him pegged two-to-one to go home this week, and I now declare him safe.

Second best: Melinda. She also challenged herself, and did a really fine job.

Best: Jordin. Excellent performance all around. Not a note out of place, and she really put a lot of emotion into telling th story in the music.

Better than the the best: My wife’s description of those rare (but no tonight) moments where all three judges dislike a performance: “It’s like Randy and Paula kick them till they’re down, and then Simon grinds out his cigarette on their face.”

the bottom three will be Chris, Sanjaya and Blake, with Chris going home.
