American Idol 4/3 - 4/4

I was hoping Phil would go. The thing with Gina is that I had the feeling that on the right song she could be just dynamite. She needed a rock song to show what she could do, and she got booted before she had the chance.

Phil? I don’t think there’s anything left in him that I particularly want to see. He should be singing in a Holiday Inn somewhere. Good voice, no charisma, and he does not know how to put an emotional impact into a song. That’s the deal breaker for me. Frankly, I don’t care how good someone’s voice is if they can’t use it to deliver a song with real impact. Phil so far has been an empty suit. So has Chris Richardson, for that matter. Both of them sing songs that you can’t even remember five minutes after they are done.

Gina knows how to deliver a song. She has that with Melinda, Jordin, and Blake. Lakisha, I’m not sure. Her voice may not be as good as the top 3 women, but it didn’t need to be. She just never got a chance to really kick out the jams.

Frankly the singer who’s appeal I just don’t get is Chris R. I find him very uninteresting. I always forget he’s still on the show until he sings then I forget him again until he ends up safe on the elimination show. He must have his fans for him to last this long but I just don’t get his appeal and he is really not that good a singer either. I thought he started out really terrible this week, I cringed, then I forgot what the rest of the song was like.

Phil is second to Chris R. in the lackluster department for me. I think he technically has a good voice but there’s no oomph or emotion to it.

Okay, I basically repeated what Sam Stone said, except I find Chris R. boring-er that Phil.

I think it’s time for Idol to move to a DWTS style of judging; public only gets 50% of the vote and the judges get the other 50%. Because clearly the public is useless this time out.

I thought the Rock Star shows had a better formula: Let the audience vote the bottom 3, then let the judges pick the one to go home.

I thought the same thing.

Crap. I was really gunning for Gina. I really believed she had a chance, especially over Phil and Haley.

Anyway you look at it, Sanjay should have been voted out before Gina.

I keep asking myself why I let this stupid addiction get the best of me. Gina is much more my style of music and Haley is just a boring bowl of Farina as far as I’m concerned. Lightbulb head should have gone, too. And don’t get me started with Sanjaya.

I hope this is a lesson to the producers to change the way the show is scored. If fucking Sanjaya wins…well, I can’t be held responsible for my actions.

Get with the program people.
The show is “American Idol”, not “America’s best singer”.
Think of all the teen idols of the past. Not a heck of a lot of them were what you would call great singers. They had a gimmick or a look.

Sanjaya will be your next American idol.

Now that I’m thinking more clearly, this is pretty much exactly how I feel. I’m so upset about Gina being voted off because she’s the only one left – actually, the only one in the Final Twelve – whose records I would buy and whose shows I would attend. The rest of them? I’ll probably listen on the radio, but I wouldn’t seek then out, or put them on my iPod, or anything like that.

Can’t make excuses for my addiction, though. I need a 12-step program or something. Reality TV is my heroin, apparently.

Actually, I love Melinda and her style of music. Not by just anyone, mind you…I think she does what she does better than most recording stars out there today. She’s got the perfect mix of Motown, blues, and jazz that makes her very appealing. And her control is so much better. She doesn’t need to slop through the notes with a cheesy run to find the note (or confuse the listener). She hits it every time.

I just wish she had a neck. :frowning:

But she could have selected carefully and rearranged or reinterpreted a song to be more rockish. That’s what nobody but Melinda really gets on that stage. It isn’t enough just to go through the mechanical motions of singing. That makes you nothing more than a human synthesizer. What you have to do is interpret the song. Eat it. Chew it. Swallow it. Let it penetrate and violate you. And then blow it out as though it were the very breath in your lungs.

Prezactly. She’s so much more than a good voice. Do they do their arrangements completely by themselves or do the contestants get professional help with that? I mean, those musicians have to know what she’s doing. Does she just say, “I’d like more brass in this part…then change the octave” and they feel their way through it or does she sit down with a professional arranger and tell HIM what she wants and then he writes the music?

I agree. And I’m starting to get a kick out of this Sanjaya business, just because it has now passed into the realm of the unpossible. Also, if he’s going to say stupid things like “welcome to the universe of Sanjaya”, that makes him at least five times as entertaining as that guy Chris.

Sligh or Robinson? Not that it matters.

Robinson. I couldn’t remember it.

Wait- that’s Michael Buble? That guy’s a recording artist? He sucked. He wouldn’t have made it past the Idol semi-finals. McWife and I kept looking at each other going- this is a joke, right?

Haley, ahhh Haley. The gods have shone down upon you so you can show me your beautiful legs and cleavage for another week.

Gina wasn’t my favorite, but she was better this week than Phil, Haley and Sanjaya. Don’t worry honey, you’ll get a good deal out of this.

That’s interesting, because my husband was in the next room and came out just when they were critiquing Phil and he said the same thing. I told him I had to look away from the TV when he was singing and he seemed to improve every time I turned my head. If I looked at him, his performance became creepy, in a kind of “it rubs the lotion on its skin” kind of way.

I felt so bad for Gina last night. She knew she was robbed. I’m starting to get a kick out of this Sanjaya mess too, Dung Beetle, but even though Gina probably wasn’t going to win, she was robbed of the opportunity to showcase more of her ability.

Okay…was he singing with a cheesy French accent? I was SHOCKED when he spoke like a back o’ the yards guy after that horrid affectation in the song. I thought he was drunk!

Yeah, he sings like he recently had oral surgery.

If it was supposed to be a singing contest, it would be on the radio. It’s a popularity contest, no two ways about it. People are voting for who they would pay money to see. Simon doesn’t give a shit if the worst singer wins, as long as that singer will make him gobs of money. Stage presence is very much a part of this. For the past few weeks, you’ll notice, Sanjaya has payed much more attention to his act then his voice.

As a side note, 'round here, Fox is simulcast (duocast) on the radio. One of the local DJs is usually in his car while it’s on so he listens to it that way. He always has a totally different opinion as to who the best and worst singers are. In fact, he’s always saying that people should turn the show on, but only listen to it and not watch the TV. This way people will judge the singer by their ability and not their looks/act.
