But…but…Jordin should be in the final, not LaKisha or Phil or Chris.
My order is:
1.Blake-His show to win.
2.Phil
3.Jordin
4.Lakisha
5.M.Doolittle
6.Chris
I don’t know, the majority of judges never seem to see it.
Phil = Actually, not bad. He does have a powerful voice and when he finds the right songs he’s not too bad. Not that I want him to stay, I don’t. I have no problem with him going out on a high note … as in a Blaze of Glory.
Jordin = Oh, honey, why’d you pick Livin’ On a Prayer. That is a screechy song and the non-screechy parts are hard as hell to sing. You took a risk but it was a bad one. I hope people don’t abandon you over this but people are dumb. I’m attempting to vote for the first time in the competition but I can’t get through.
Lakisha = She was better than other more recent performances. I think it helps that she didn’t pick a well-known song.
Blake = He definitely made it his own. I don’t normally like beatboxing but I liked that performance.
Chris = Ugh. He tried to smarm up Wanted: Dead or Alive. Please go home now and you can take Phil with you.
Melinda = She picked one I wasn’t familiar with, she did okay as usual but she’s still not that interesting to me.
They need to give a better warning when they are going to show the president. I’m on my second day of a migraine and I didn’t need to see that.
First swollen bellied dying babies and then Bush. I am officially frightened of turning on this show.
Phil
Just too formulaic. All you do is sing, meaning all you do is carry a melody. But a saxophone could do that. Singing is story telling. You just don’t compel.
Jordin
Your range restriction was quite a revelation, and not a good one. I have to wonder whether you could have gone higher. On an unrelated note, I thought your gyrations with the guitarist were a bit… weird.
LaKisha
Damn good. I’m glad you were able to dig down to the gospel roots of rock ‘n’ roll. There were some moments of Cass Elliot tonight, I thought. Maybe you should re-examine your choice of genre. A big black female rocker would be hot.
Blake
I like your balls, I really do. You have an energetic moxy that is sort of the Antiphil. Your performance tonight was more experimental than entertaining, but the experiment itself was interesting. Plus, I liked the Chris-type head turns.
Chris
You surprised me. After last week’s atypically weak performance, I was worried about you, but you pulled it off really well. Good vocals and a great stage presence. It was the right song, and the right time for you to sing it.
Melinda
Not your best, but still better than anyone else. The problem with you is one of expectation. I really don’t know what more you can do to prove yourself worthy of the title. But you’re going to have to think of something. In the music business, static is death. Each phase of your career has to outdo the last.
Full disclosure: here’s me in the late 80’s.
Long-haired rock n’ roll Jersey boy…yeah, I was a huge Bon Jovi fan. So, I came into this week with nervous anticipation. After all, as much as I love this show and can appreciate the talents of the good singers, usually my opinion of the music runs somewhere between “sorta tolerate” to “can’t fricking stand”.
That said, we had a 2/3rds very good show:
[ol][li]Blake[/li][li]Melinda[/li][li]Phil[/li][li]LaKisha[/li][li]Jordin[/li][li]Chris[/ol][/li]The gap between LaKisha and Jordin, you might juuust barely be able to squeeze an ocean liner through. Sideways.
Ah, damn…crying baby, gotta run. One last thing though –
I was wondering if he was made to drop that word. After all, “loaded” generally refers to guns…I can easilly see a spooked producer not wanting such an evil word sang.
Oh, and Melinda sang better than Blake, but Blake’s performance was the most entertaining thing this show has ever put out.
Haven’t read the thread yet, but here is my thingie:
Bon Jovi night? Are you serious?? Oh man. (I actually like some Bon Jovi stuff, but I kind of have a hard time taking them seriously–I think I still sort of think of them as a hair band from the '80s. One I had a huge crush on in the day, mind you, but even so…)
Phil: Started horribly (so nasal I couldn’t even understand the words) but it got better and I actually kind of liked it.
Jordin: Holy crap it’s the hair that ate Manhattan! Also the hair and clothes make her look really heavy this week. I can barely hear her over the music, but it seems like she is struggling a little with the melody
I have to say that she sounds kinda karaoke which is sad since she is by far my favorite to win. Oh Jordin. Honey. Different song might have been better for ya.
LaKisha: I am not familiar with this song, but it sounds nothing like Bon Jovi to me. She sounds good though, and I like this better than most stuff I’ve heard her sing. She needs to not squat on the stage at the end though… I thought she was gonna “go” or something. :X
Blake: Hrm, dark hair. Suits him I think. I am not sure he is on key though. I kind of like to see his beatboxy stuff again, because it’s what makes his stuff stand out, but it’s kinda taking the song over. I think I’d have preferred a little less. I think he got less pitchy after the beginning, but the start was pretty rough.
Chris: Oh how I loathe him. I hate the way he looks, and I hate the way he sounds. He is completely hideous in every way. I just hate the guy so much. Ok he’s about to sing, let’s get it over with. He’s fucking with the notes again. I swear he does it because he knows he can’t hit them without trying 4 or 5 nearby ones first. I agree with Jon; he didn’t get the mood of the song right at all. Oh Jesus he is making stupider faces than usual this week. Make him stop. Please vote him off, America… I can’t take it much longer.
Melinda: I figured out something that bothers me about her voice: I don’t like the way she sings the “a” sound in words. I also don’t like her weird back of the throat “raspy” thing. For one thing she did it way too much in this song, but it also just sounds forced to me. Overall this is on that I didn’t mind from her. It didn’t put me to sleep the way she usually does.
EWWW Bush is on!
Ok, my order:
- Melinda, and I don’t like her. She looks weird or something, but she “rocked it out.”
- Phil, and I don’t like him much either. It’s easier to judge if you close your eyes.
- Blake, I enjoyed the beatboxing but I didn’t love the whole performance.
- Jordin, she was ok but we’ve all seen better. She’s still my favorite since Gina is gone.
- LaKisha, yuk.
- Chris - absolutely ruined my favorite JBJ song. Please go home.
Who knew Bon Jovi night would be such fun? I thought this week was far better than last week’s mushy songs or country week. I like Bon Jovi all right and I think he looks great for a guy who’s been through the rock juicer.
Phil rocked the song. And I might be rooting for him more if I wanted to fuck him. But I don’t. And it’s so shallow of me that I felt guilty and called in a pity vote. (It was verrrry easy to get through.)
Jordin - If people based their vote just on tonight’s performance, she’ll be going home. Which would be a shame because she has so much talent. So I called in 2 votes for her, too, just because I like her. I’m not sure if that’s right or wrong.
Lakisha - Didn’t know the song, but absolutely loved it. She’s got the soul, sistah. Of course, I love a good gospel tune. Why don’t they have gospel night? Oh, and Simon kissed her! I called in 3 votes for her.
Blake - More than anyone, I anticipate his performance. The great thing about him is that he’s got the voice to back up his inherent quirkiness. And I love how Jon was nervous for him.
The other kids up there are singers; this guy is a performer. I called in 4 votes for him and then got busy signals.
Chris - If he didn’t have that Timberlake resemblance, he’d have been gone weeks ago. He does have talent, but he’s just not in the same league as Lakisha, Melinda or Blake. 0 votes. Sorry, dude.
Melinda - She’s such an unlikely rock star, but she channeled Tina Turner and turned in a great performance. Have a nice day, Melinda. I called in 2 votes.
I thought there was a limit per household, but I never got a msg saying that the limit was reached…
My assessment:
- Blake (he gets bonus points for sticking his neck out so far)
- Lakisha
- Melinda
- Phil
- Jordin
- Chris
Finally a week I can get behind! I love Bon Jovi. I’m watching on DVR right now…just gonna watch and make notes.
Phil - Blaze of Glory - knocked it out of the park. WOW! I think it was his best performance yet. I haven’t been a Phil Fan all season, but he brought it on country week, and again tonight.
Jordan - Living on a Prayer - didn’t sound as bad to me as the judges seemed to think. It wasn’t great, but I didn’t think it was bad.
LaKisha - This Ain’t a Love Song - hmmmmmmm, I’m not liking this too much. Even though she sounds fine. And of course the judges love it.
Blake - You Give Love a Bad Name - Blake what’s with the hair? The pantamime…ugh. If I close my eyes, it’s OK. I think he took a big risk and it’s gonna pay off for him.
Chris - Wanted Dead or Alive - Hated it. Could he have butchered that any worse?
Melinda - Have a Nice Day - Suprising! I thought she would bomb this week. She is going to have an amazing career. WOW again for Melinda! I loved it.
I so wanted someone to do It’s My Life. That was the only thing missing for me. All in all I loved this week! I think Jordan and Chris are in trouble.
We’ll see tomorrow!
It’s really funny to read these threads. It’s like we’re watching different shows.
Okay, here are my comments:
Phil did all right. He should’ve pushed it more country, that’s where he’s comfortable. I thought he did bring the “I’ve done this in front of the mirror thousands of times and I’m finally doing it on stage” vibe to his performance and it helped. It’s always nice to see people who enjoy what they’re doing.
Oh Jordin. It just wasn’t your night, honey. Hopefully you’ll make it through and leave this sad moment behind. Sweetheart, you’re too young and too not rock for Bon Jovi. Why didn’t someone point her to a ballad?
Lakisha was as strong as I’ve seen her, but she’s not going to win and she’s not marketable.
Blake, get your ass in a studio, flesh that out and you’ve got a hit single - the dance clubs will eat that shit up. Not sure if there’s a career there, but you came back to your base at a key moment. Good call and good job by the judges not slamming you for it.
Chris, could you please just fucking die already? I feel bad for this, but Chris just comes across as a date rapist to me. He’s totally into himself and he’ll do whatever it takes for him to feel good about himself. I’m probably being completely unfair to the guy, but I think I actually hate him. Weird. Oh, and I don’t know what the judges are listening to, but he can’t fucking sing. I don’t care how much he looks like Justin, he can’t sing. Furthermore, he hasn’t ever been able to sing and he never should have gone to Hollywood, let alone made it this far. If he wins, he’ll have one of the lowest selling “winner” albums in Idol history and he’ll turn on the show to boot.
Melinda can rock it a bit? No shit. Given that performance she should have picked “It’s My Life”. It’s the same style of song and much better known. I’m really enjoying the new “yes, I actually belong here” Melinda.
As a general comment, is it me or has the sound balance gotten hugely better this season? In past years, it really seems like the band overwhelmed the singers. This year, not so much.
I just remembered Phil’s comment about singing the song in front of a mirror with his comb as a mic. I thought “he had a comb?!”
I’ve been getting through a lot on Jordin’s line in the last couple of hours.
I loved Blake’s performance tonight. It was original and surprisingly very entertaining. Even if he doesn’t have the greatest voice on the show, his style is definitely unique and I hope he makes it to the finals (and a record contract of some kind).
I’m with Zakalwe, mostly. I was surprised that Melinda could rock at all.
I’m not getting it about Chris looking like Justin Timberlake. You know who looks like Justin Timberlake? Lloyd Christmas, that’s who.
On the other hand, who can tell me they’ve ever seen Chris Richardson and Rob Corddry in the same room? Hah? Hah?
Oh, and I was stressing all evening about how difficult a time Melinda was going to have with this genre. I really should have harked my memory back two weeks, when I turned to Michaela and told her how much Melinda reminded me of Tina Turner (about two minutes before Simon mentioned it). And she went there AGAIN!
Big wheel keep on turnin’; Proud Mary, keep on burnin’…
How the hell is Chris still on that show?
What are the judges hearing? They are not hearing what we hear.
What’s this “we” shit, Kimo Sabe?
I hear Chris and like it.
Dude, he was flat. He tried for the blueness Jon was talking about, and missed it by a mile.
Chris should have been told that Bon Jovi is not sung “nasally”, or whatever the hell he called it a couple of weeks ago.
Why Why Why can’t Phil go home? He scares me.
LaKisha was good, and Melinda is just way above the others. No matter what happens, they will get contracts.
I agree that Jordin should have been directed to a ballad. She would have knocked Bed of Roses out of the park.
I love Blake for taking the risk, and I think he will be rewarded for it.
As a consequence, I voted for Jordin something like 50 times, then I watched the Dancing with the Stars results.
He sounds like a girl to me. I can’t wait for him to disappear.
I think Chris and Phil are out this week. But that may be wishful thinking.
I thought Melinda did a great job. You could see she wasn’t nuts about it, but she has the knowledge and control to pull it off.
