American Idol 5/1 & 2

George Bush giving a shout out to Bono = jump the shark moment…

Oh, good call! And if I remember correctly, you also noted the resemblance between Melinda and DW. I think you’ve got a gift for this. I doubt it’ll make ya any money, though.

Phil. I tried not looking at it and it wasn’t so bad.
**
Jordin**. Out of the great respect I have for her, I’m going to pass up commenting on that performance.
**
Lakisha**. For a moment there, I remembered why I liked her back at the beginning.
**
Blake**. I…I think I’m in love. I’m torn between rooting for him or Jordin to win this.

Chris. I’m definitely in hate. I never understood how he got on the damn show to begin with. Tonight he leaves.

Melinda. I got a giggle out of sweet Melinda snarling, “Have a nice day!” Not bad.

Visually, this was a hard show for me. First we had sweaty Phil, looking like a very tall slug with eyebrows. Then it was Lakisha’s tight outfit, and greasy lipstick on Simon’s face. Then Chris and President Bush…I’m gagging.

I was dreading Bon Jovi night. I liked a couple of songs okay, but I was never a fan and I hate his new stuff.

My husband and I laughed when Jordin said her mom was a fan back in the day. I said, “How old does he feel now?”. Then I realized that means I’m old too.

Phil: I don’t like him, but that was a very good performance. His best of the competition.

Jordin: I love her, but that was terrible. It was absolutely cringe-inducing. At least she knew it and didn’t argue with the judges about it.

Lakisha: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Good singing, but during her performance my mind wandered and I was trying to decide what to have for dinner tonight.

Chris: Terrible as usual. If he’s not one of the 2 going home, then I’m never watching this show again. Oh, who am I kidding? I’m Idol’s bitch.

Blake: I was really expecting something horrible when Jon was nervous about what Blake was doing with the song, but that was really great. I loved the hiss of the record at the beginning. I prefer the dark hair, too. He would almost be worth seeing the Idol concert this year. He’s probably going to do some really interesting things.

Melinda: She did a great job with a song I hate.

I tried to vote for Jordin (because I love her, but I’m afraid for her after that performance) and Blake, but I didn’t get through on either of their numbers for the first 10 minutes of voting. I hope that’s a good sign.

Bwah! That’s what my husband said, too.

What’s this George Bush thing y’all are talking about? Did I miss something while fast forwarding?

Melinda is a rocker! She blew the rest of them away.

Lakisha really surprised me - I thought she did well.

Beat Box Boy’s arrangement of the song was better than his singing but his performance was good.

The others: boring.

The thing is, JBJ has performed Living on a Prayer as a ballad. I was wondering why Jordin didn’t, and concluded that she must have thought she didn’t need to. I got the sense that she really wanted to be able to sing rock, and didn’t realize that a week is not long enough to get good at it.

Phil- like others, I could only enjoy it with my eyes closed. Still hate the guy, though.
Jordin- oh dear God, that wasn’t good. You’re on the bubble this week based on that performance, much as I’d like to see you stick around.
Lakisha- damn girl, you finally brung it! After so many weeks of phoning it in, who knew that rock week is the one that would make you shine. Nice job.
Chris- he has the opposite problem from Phil- he has the look of an idol, but not the voice. Phil looks frightening, but his voice isn’t actually that bad, provided he stays within his relatively limited range.
Blake- gutsy choice and he pulled it off. All-around best performer of the lot.
Melinda- she is so not the rocker but like every other week, she rose to the occasion, and really sold it. Thought it was cute watching her do the “rocker” thing with her hand in the interview.

Chris has to go this week, between last week’s and last night’s performances. Jordin’s perf last week might save her this week. I think it’s Chris and LaKisha hitting the bricks.

Wow, I wonder if the producers really did force him to bowdlerize that. I mean, what I liked about the original line is that it made the rock star:gunslinger/six-string:six-shooter connection. One wonders if the nannies gave Blake a stern talking-to before he was allowed to sing the line “shot through the heart”.

I think Jordin and Chris are going home tonight. Jordin is fantastic, but that performance blew chunks. And the only other candidate for going home is Phil, and unfortunately for Jordin he sang his best performance last night. Also, he hasn’t even been in the bottom three for several weeks, so clearly he’s built a fan base. And last week he probably picked up a lot of country fans.

Melinda was the best singer of the night, and Blake had the best performance. Lakisha in third, and Phil in fourth. That’s the way I’d score it, anyway.

I was wondering why she didn’t bump the key up a notch and sing the ballad version myself. I think she could have killed it that way.

My rankings:

  1. Phil - He gave me chills. Granted, this is my second favorite Bon Jovi song, but I thought he knocked it out of the park.
  2. Melinda - Very good. Not as difficult a song as some of the others sang. I was impressed that she could rock out.
  3. Blake - The singing wasn’t all that great, I didn’t think, but the performance was awesome. Plus, he looked hot. Love the dark hair.
  4. LaKisha - Not bad. I thought she was going to fail miserably but she didn’t. It seems strange to put her so far down on my list but the three above her were just that good. She looked fantastic too.
  5. Jordin - Yikes. As I said above, she should have slowed this one down and taken the key up into her range.
  6. Chris - Damn you for butchering my favorite Bon Jovi song, Chris. You need to go, now.

My picks to go home would be a Chris/LaKisha or Chris/Jordin combo based on this week’s performances.

Hey-

What do youse guys (being cute) think about the kiss?

The problem with Jordin wasn’t just her performance. It was discovering that she had a severely limited tonal range. That means she can’t even sing the Star Spangled Banner. Not that she would ever need to, but still.

Holy crap, that is hilarious. Thanks for having the guts to share that picture!

Sorry, can’t get on board the Melinda love train this week. I thought that song sucked. Way too forced and shouty. Didn’t hear the Tina Turner comparison at all.

I’m scratching my head as to why Jordin didn’t choose a ballad.

LaKisha and Blake had the best performances of the night.

What? The only reason I didn’t absolutely drool over that picture was because I couldn’t see his face, but I thought those were some gorgeous locks.

Okay, maybe the white tux was worth a snicker.

He has to do SOMETHING with those eyebrows!

I don’t think I’d ever heard a Bon Jovi song all the way through before tonight, so I’m definitely out of my element this week. [snark] And it doesn’t appear I’ve missed much[/snark]

I too was surprised at Jordin’s lack of range. I’m sure she could’ve taken it up half a step and done better.

Melinda is just adorable. If it’s all an act – then she’s a helluva actress. Loved the “rock on” gestures, and the “I like church…” comment.

I think it’ll be Jordin & Phil going home tonight. Which is 50% travesty.

My 2 cents observations-

Jon Bon Jovi: “I just wanted to start out by telling all of you, my kids love the show.” Oooo, slam!
Jordin: “Oh yeah, my mother used to be a big fan of yours.” Oooo, counter slam!

Jon Bon Jovi: “I don’t know if Blake should be messing with one of my songs like that.” Oooo, slam!
Blake: (Starts song by putting a needle on the album like it’s so old the original came out on vinyl) Oooo, counter slam!

And congrats to Melinda for taking a horrible, horrible, cheesey, stupid song “Have a Nice Day” and giving it some attitude and making it listenable and good.

And thank you Jordin for singing a classic and putting it where it is relevant today: On a Disney KidsBop album.

Chris can’t sing his way out of a wet paper bag, and he has the most irritating mannerisms ever when performing… but is it just me or does he also have just an incredibly fat head? Like literally… he isn’t a fat guy overall, but he has the pudgiest face I’ve ever seen on a non-fat guy. I think he’s even uglier than Phil, and that’s saying a lot. And I’m sorry, but he and Ryan Seacrest need to learn to shave. The stubbly look is gross.

I don’t think they meant “we” as in “all of us” but rather “we” as in plural. I think you’re the only one who likes Chris…perhaps on the entire planet.

Unfortunately, though, she had to come up a full third on that low note — six half-steps.

Don’t forget these votes will be combined with last week’s. She did fairly well then.
