American Idol Feb. 20-22

I’ll throw a little love to Phil mostly because his baby girl is really, really cute.

But his singing was less than exciting. Wow, that opening really hurt. He did hit a good glory note, though, and we all know that Randy and Paula love nothing better than a good glory note.

If the girls are as bad as the guys, I may end up dropping out this season. Heaven knows that would give me back many, many hours of my life.

Oh, who am I kidding? I’ll be here, no matter how sucky it is. Because I’m a glutton for punishment or something.

review:

Rudy is the Latin Clay Aiken
Brandon was good.
Sundance picked a beautiful song, but was pitchy
Paul is the Asian Brandon Calhoon–now with pitch!
Chris R. is cute in a vaguely J.D. Fortune way
Nick–I just don’t care
Blake was okay
Fez–whatever
Sligh is my man!
Jared is really really pretty
AJ is just a boy band thing
Phil does nothing for me, I’m just too straight for skinny ugly guys like that

Was that actually 2 hours???

Was Paul that thin bald and overly eyebrowed before? I don’t remember him looking freaky.

Yay for editing, the wee clips they played during the number recap made most of them sound way better than they actually were.

So I should’ve paid more attention to Chris Sligh (I’m guessing at his last name). He wasn’t bad judging by the clip.

So I guess if I had to pick a top 3…

  1. Chris
  2. Beatbox (don’t confuse this with high praise)
  3. rolls the dice maybe the last guy? I dunno.

Boy that sucked.

Hope springs eternal for me too. My faves so far are Paul, Chris Sligh, and Blake. I just hope that the problems we’ve seen so far are just nerves and not a lack of quality talent.

Very underwhelming, I’m afraid. No front-runners.

What the fuck was wrong with Simon? Usually there’s a hint of jokiness with him and Seacrest, but he looked (and sounded) seriously pissed. Made me uncomfortable watching it.

The song selection today SUCKED. The songs were generally obscure as fuck or old as dirt. I hated Chris S.'s song. He’d better watch it, because his humor and song choice has the potential to rub folks the wrong way. Simon can be a dick at times, but as of now he’s the judge and you’re one of 24 finalists, you shmoe. The only winner was Blake choosing the Keane song. Totally unexpected and he did a nice job.

What the fuck was up with Paula’s hair?

I have watched American Idol from the very, very beginning. While I have rooted for particular singers, I have never - NEVER - picked up the phone to vote. Tonight, that changed. I decided my time has come to vote for the people who did not suck it hard, suck it long, and offer to teach your grandmother to suck eggs. These people were Chris Sligh and Blake. My mind can not grasp the monster level of suckitude overwhelming the show tonight. Oh and as for Phil Stacey? On that last close up, my thoughts were “He’s got nice cheekbones…is he wearing blush?”

Oh, and Biggirl? I want to hang out at your house.

Total nitpick: They said Jared Cotter was from Long Island. I went to the AI site to see where on LI specifically, and it says Kew Gardens. Dangit, Kew Gardens is in Queens! Get it right, people! (Yes, physically Queens is on the island, yadda yadda.)

Wow…that was, what, 90, 95 percent shit? Hope the girls make up for that crapfest.

Anyway, in order:

I know, it was so painful, it seemed like four.

Well, Jared said he was from Long Island.

My TiVo recorded a rerun of Stargate:SG-1 instead of American Idol tonight… can I watch it online somewhere? Or at least clips?

This site has sound clips, maybe video as well.

I don’t get several things.

I don’t get what happened to male voices. How did it happen that the majority of them sing falsetto. I don’t particularly like falsetto and would far prefer to hear a person of the male persuasion sounding like an actual male.

I don’t get how they audition tens of thousands of people, often ditch ones I think sound better in audition than the ones they pick, and then end up with awful ones in the final group.

I don’t get why they let the judges continue these battles. Actually, it was unpleasant tonight because I think Simon and Ryan actually do hate each other now. I was so sick of watching Paula smack Simon around (yeah, that’s a great example to show kids, folks) last season, I was hoping he’d give her hell once and for all. Enough, already, with the battles and the picking on Simon. It’s ooollllllllldddddddddd.

They’ll keep it up because it’s what the producers think the audience wants to see. They’re the ones who encourage the bickering between Cowell and Seacrest, AFAIK. I’ve seen those two on talk shows and it looked like they got along quite well.
That said, it was a bit much with the sniping tonight. It’s supposed to be more fun.

Anyhow…I think Sanjaya and Sundance will be going home, plus the first guy who could not enunciate to save his life. Sanjaya is too fragile and pouty, and Sundance was way way off.
I really liked Blake and his song choice. I liked Sligh Guy a lot as well.

Sundance and Sanjaya won’t be going home, I think, because they’re two of the few people I know. I know I’m one person, but I think that may hold true for many.

People that stood out as being good for me:

Chris Sligh
Phil (the last guy, think he’s the one that ditched his wife having the baby)

That’s it. Pretty weak, but I expect it to get better.

I didn’t perceive that most of them sing falsetto. Some of them sang a few lines in falsetto. But I agree that they seem to sing high and don’t sound male. This seems to be common in Rock ‘n’ Roll and Rhythm & Blues genres, which I assume are the main inspiration for this group. In contrast, Country music seems to have a good portion of baritones. I’d like to hear some lower-register singing, but even more I’d like to hear some singing that has heart and expression in it. There was precious little of that tonight.

Hmm. I didn’t see him as being fragile and pouty. He did seem at a loss for what to do when Ryan was pushing him to argue with Simon. Sanjaya seemed receptive to accepting the criticism and learning from it so as to improve, and Ryan just seemed to want to get a fight going. Sanjaya didn’t want to fight (and what would be the point, anyway?), but apparently was caught off guard and didn’t think to tell Ryan to stuff it.

I pretty much agreed with Simon verbatim on every point.

My wife and I thought Blake was far and away the best (I’d never heard of Keane before but I downloaded Somewhere Only We Know, and I actually think Blake sang it much better). His voice was smooth as silk.

I like Sligh, but ugh, are my wife and I the only ones who notice his lisp?

Sundance sucked ass tonight, but dialidol has him ranked #1. Meh.

Holy cow, that was awful. These guys tour the country for weeks, auditioning tens of thousands of people, and THESE GUYS were the best they could find? Listening to that show was like watching an average Karaoke competition.

As a fun comparison, look at the male singers than were on Rock Star Supernova last year, which was supposed to be a grade ‘B’ American Idol:

Magni
Toby Rand
Ryan Star
Josh Logan

Those guys were all better than anyone on this show.

There were only 2 good performances: Chris S and Blake. There were 2 not awful ones: Sandy and AJ. The rest were varying degrees of suckitude with Rudy and Sundance bringing up the rear.

And this going to 10-- I’m an oooold lady who has to get up before the crack of dawn 3 days a week. I barely made it through the last guy’s song before I passed out. Maybe if they had been more exciting. . …
