They can all go home and turn out the lights on the way out. I have never seen such a boring bunch, WTF? Every year there’s someone who stands out, maybe it’s too early, but no one stands out for me so far.
Michael Lynche - “It’s A Man’s, Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World” - Loved it. Loved. It. This is where he lives.
John Park - “Gravity” - It’s a slow song to start with; it doesn’t need to be turned into a dirge. I still think this guy has a good voice, but I’m starting to think he has no touch. I agree with the judges; that was lacking in soul. You know that thing that David Cook had that made you stop what you were doing and watch him? That star power? John seems to be missing it so far.
Casey James - “I Don’t Wanna Be” - Hot mess. The more I hear him, the more I realize he has a sucky voice - that vibrato thing does nothing for me. Was he forgetting the words as he was singing? And is there a reason he couldn’t stay on the beat? Amateur hour’s over.
Adam Lambert - “Everybody Knows” - Like, he’s like a really young kid, like. Ahh, so nasal! He has an interesting voice when he gets it out of his nose. That was right next door to good. Randy likes his package.
Todrick Hall - “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” - I liked his interpretation. A few flat spots, but overall, I quite enjoyed that. I can see what they’re saying, though - take how you’re singing it, and dial it back by about half.
Jermaine Sellers - “What’s Goin’ On” - He rocks the onesie - hah! Ooh, taking on Marvin Gaye - the boy has balls! And it didn’t suck - good job. Again, I can see what they mean about laying off the over-singing.
Andrew Garcia - “You Give Me Something” - He can sing, but not that. Could he look more pissed off while singing? Off beat, off pitch, flat spots - eek.
Aaron Kelly - “My Girl” - Too much vibrato in his voice, too. I don’t think he meant to, but I think he Hanson Brothered a motown classic (the singing Hansons, not the hockey Hansons). Yikes. That was not good.
Tim Urban - “Come On Get Higher” - “Fuck’d walk on water” - you might want to watch your pronunciation, prayer-boy. That wasn’t the best of the night, but he chose a song he could handle, and he just plain sang it. Good job.
Lee DeWyze - “Lips Of An Angel” - That was…not…great? I think this guy can do something, but I’m not sure that’s it.
The judges are once again giving incredibly confusing, mixed messages; “You didn’t make it your own.” “You made it too much your own.” “You need to make it special.” “You need to make it less special.” Agh.
Now that I’ve read everyone else’s comments, yup, boring is the keyword this year. I get the feeling that no one other than Michael Lynche actually thinks they can win it - we got us a bunch of wimps this year.
Excellent summary, Cat Whisperer. Except for liking Alex less and Aaron more, I’m on board with everything you wrote. Were it up to me, I’d drop Alex and John, but I think Jermaine has to be nervous.
David Cook played a tiny bit of the very beginning of the solo to All Right Now, just enough to demonstrate that he’s an entry-level lead player at best. I’m hoping that Casey, having demonstrated that he’s a serious guitar player last night, will focus more on singing now. I think he is a potential winner, but blistering guitar leads won’t get him there. I think it was smart to show that he’s got that skill while the competition still has a lot of much weaker contestants in it. Now he needs to make sure he out-sings them.
Yeah, I turned it on last night, and suddenly realized I’d rather go do something else. However, my husband (who pretends to hate Idol) mysteriously left the TV on that channel, so I caught some of it anyway. Of the boys, I like Casey. The rest are so beige to me I can hardly see or hear them. My husband maintains that Lee is good because he sounds just like what’s on the radio (ugh).
Michael Lynche - “It’s A Man’s, Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World” - Loved it. Awesome.
John Park - “Gravity” - Weak. Not enough emotion.
Casey James - “I Don’t Wanna Be” - Woo-hoo! He’s hot. My husband called me a cougar.
Alex Lambert - “Everybody Knows” - Very sweet, so young. Hate his hair.
Todrick Hall - “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” - He was a’ight. The judges were right to tell him to not “oversing” so much.
Jermaine Sellers - “What’s Goin’ On” - “I rocks my onesie!” OMG. Can’t stand him. I hate the grammar, and “I’ve got God.”
Andrew Garcia - “You Give Me Something” - He can sing, but I wish he’d step it up.
Aaron Kelly - “My Girl” - Reminds me of Neil Sedaka, and not in a good way. He missed the ending falsetto.
Tim Urban - “Come On Get Higher” - Bleh.
Lee DeWyze - “Lips Of An Angel” - That was pretty good.
Agreed. (Thanks for the formatting set up!)
Alex Lambert only wishes he sounded like Adam.
Without reading the rest of the thread, so as not to be unduly influenced, my top 3 from last night: Lee, Mike, Alex. My bottom 3: Tim, Jermain, Todrick.
And once again DialIdol doesn’t give a clue on who might be voted out. I think that might be a sign of apathy.
Agreed, overall a very bland night, filled with stage awkwardness. I’m really starting to like Casey James, though, who I’d initially hated due to the inevitable Bucky Covington country makeover that was coming. From day 1 the producers were salivating at the potential of a country-grunge Jesus Take the Wheel cover from him.
Thankfully, he’s derailed the producers ambitions and seems to have enough self-identity and genuine love of rock to avoid signing with NASCAR records.
And he even gave a little  to Kara’s idiocy, as if thinking “You and your John Tesh bedroom poster can go back to Autotuning your Creed albums” Love it!
Gah! Talk about wishful thinking. That reminds me, I meant to buy his album.
(No problem, Dolores. )
I like Lee, but he’s holding back or something. I like a lot of these guys, but there seems to be so much stage fright or nerves or something going on this year. I can understand why they’re feeling like that (I’d be crapping my pants to try to sing in a format like that), but that’s part of the competition - they’re looking for a performer. If they can’t step up, they should rightly get kicked off. I had no worries for Adam Lambert last year - winning was beside the point for him. He was going to be a star regardless - he was born to be on a stage.
I think Simon used his influence over the other judges to pick a terrible group of contestants this year, to torpedo Idol just before his new show starts.
Seriously, Aaron Kelly? Tim Urban? John Park? Jermaine Sellers?
Simon is right, you can walk into any bar in LA on any night of the week and find singers that would blow the doors off of any of these guys. You wouldn’t even need to go more than 3 blocks from the Kodak Theater!
I watched only the first hour and then switched over to LOST.
Michael L. was great. I can’t say that I really enjoyed the others a whole lot. Casey is okay but needs to focus less on his guitar. John is just awkward.
MJ’s Big Blog is reporting that Crystal is still touch-and-go for tonight, and if she can’t go, she’ll likely be eliminated.
That. Would. Suck.
I don’t like her anyway. She can sing, but the “too cool for school” thing is seriously annoying.
Fuck her diabetes!
I don’t think his motives are that evil, I think he’s trying to sabotage the men because the past few seasons have been strong for the guys and weak for the girls.
I thought that was confirmed last week when Simon told all the guys before the show something to the effect of that their entire careers not to mention their lives depended on them giving a great performance that night…seemed like an attempt to jinx them.
Last night I think was the worst AI I have ever seen, usually I multi-task during it, reading or playing games so I can tune out the blah blah blah and listen to whatever performances catch my ear…NOTHING did last night, I was like I didn’t even watch the show.
I hope Crystal is ok. Fuck all diabetes!!!
(I have it, too.)
