Every so often I get totally mesmerized by the beauty of Babel Fish. So much so that I think someone, anyone, ought to start a thread employing it somehow. I figure that someone may as well be me as there probably aren’t any Dopers who can read my mind. On the other hand maybe there is, but I digress.

Here’s what I’ve done. I’ve taken 20 well-known sayings and run them through Babel Fish thusly: English to French, French to German, German to French, French to English and then back through the whole schpeil again. Some are downright easy and others are completely baffling. See if you can guess what they are.

Beauty, eh? The ones you listed are all right. That just leaves the real poseurs.

Actually, as I peruse your answers, #18 isn’t quite right, but you listed it as most people say it, so I’ll cut you some slack. It’s actually “The love of money is the root of all evil.”

Truth be told I think I was a little loose with the wording myself when I ran it through. I believe I used “What does not kill me makes me stronger.” So, there you go.

The secret to totally screwing up the phrase is. . . Japanese! So these phrases went from English to French to German to English to Japanese to English.
