Baltimore-DC Dopefest,part 2?

Well, gang, it’s been several months since we last got together. Anyone else interested in doing it again, maybe sometime in May? I for one would like to do it.

Cecil said it. I believe it. That settles it.

Sure, count me in. I am not sure how far into Maryland I can get. Probably about the end of the METRO, or a few blocks beyond. Weeknights are best for me, but I know, I know, no one else can do that. Let me know how it works out.

Imagine my signature begins five spaces to the right of center.

Dave, I think the green line goes as far as Greenbelt (coincidence? I think not)- how is that for a more central location between NOVA & Bmore? Can somebody with intimate knowledge of the last stop on the green line give us a short list of greasy spoons in that area? Some place with nicer waiters & tastier food would be nice.

Weeknights are bad for me because I have to get up so friggin early, unless it’s Friday night.

The Greenbelt stop is about 1 1/2 miles from the University of Maryland. You have all the university bars (Bentley’s - good hamburgers, Santa Fe - okay food, too, what used to be the 'Vous - don’t know what it is now). There’s a really good little Greek deli right there, too, but it’s a deli. It’s been a few years since I’ve been there, so I’m sure there are some new places, too.

If you guys set a date and I can get a day or two off work, I might drag my husband up there from SC for a gathering. I’m dying to see what some of you look like and I’m a little homesick, too.

I would be up for it but can only make it Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays.

HUGS!

College Park has its advantages- Metro accessible, plenty of cheap diners and plenty of nice bars.

The disadvantage, especially if we go on a weekend in May, is that those bars are likely to be packed with college students trying to release some tension (read: get smashed) after, before, or during finals.

There are a lot of nice places in Laurel, although most of them are the T.G. Benibee’s carbon-copy model (specifically: Lone Star, Don Pablo’s, The Olive Garden, T.G.I. Friday’s, Bennigan’s, The Silver Diner, and possibly a few others I’m completely blanking on). If we do go with that, I’m willing to pick people up from the Greenbelt Metro (so long as they’re willing to ride in a car driven by a smoker; I can promise not to smoke on the way to the restaurant. I can’t promise that the smoky-residue smell stuck in the car won’t absolutely overwhelm you.)

As for me, any night- week-night or week-end- should be fine.

The Santa Fe is a frat bar where I think we would feel uncomfortable. The Cornerstone Grill (the former Vous) or Bentley’s, perhaps. Perhaps the Hardtime Cafe (a chili place) where Route 1 crosses the Beltway. Perhaps the Royal Gourmet, a Chinese buffet in Greenway Center, or Chevy’s, the Mexican place there.

This would be the third meeting, incidentally.

I move to strike the existance of an alleged first meeting on the grounds that the minutes were never read and formally approved.

I’m fairly flexible (I can arch my back until my head touches my heels), as long as the place isn’t of the sticky-floor variety (as I remember the 'Vous being) and can push tables together for 12-14 of us (all that’s likely to show up). Since a Laurel destination excludes the metro riders, I’ll be driving from DC and can pick up as many as three additional people as long as two of them can squeeze into a Prelude’s faux-back seat.

Okay, okay… I can do week nights. I’ll just be a zombie the next morning. Don’t blame me if your data lines are acting up the following day. John makes a good point about the college finals syndrome- meeting on a weeknight might allow us to steer clear of them.

I’m actually not as set on being near Baltimore as I was before. I realize that the Metro is necessary for some of y’all. I was thinking about maybe Chevy’s or Chi-Chi’s in Greenbelt near, NASA, but I’d have to look to see how far they are from Metro stations.

Cecil said it. I believe it. That settles it.

According to the U.Md. calendar, finals run from 5/18 - 5/24, with commencement on 5/25. So if we meet near College Park, I suggest we either avoid places that get lots of student traffic, or wait until after May 25.

I’m tentatively scheduled to be on the road rom Sunday the 14th to Wed. 5/17, and the 18th is my anniversary (#9). But anytime else would be fine with me, and I would be happy to help transport people between Metro and restaurant.

If enough of you capital-area fuckers ar going to be there, I will try and make it up as long as it’s a weekend I’m not in Columbus…

If only, like, three people are going to go - and two of them are Opal and Falcon, Dopers I have already met! - then it would suck to go all that way.

Fine, Satan…just insult me by saying you don’t want to see me again! Hmpf!

Greenbelt or Laurel works for me. I’m busy on weekends from now until the 26th of May, so don’t know how that impacts y’all. I’m also out of town the week of May 8th for an EPA conference. So any chance we could plan around that?

The Chi Chi’s in Greenbelt is gone. It’s been replaced by the Royal Gourmet. The Chevy’s or the Royal Gourmet in Greenway Center are only a mile from the Greenbelt station of the Metro. The places in Laurel that John Corrado mentions (just south of the Laurel Mall) are seven miles from the Metro. Bennigan’s isn’t very good food, if I recall correctly, and T.G.I. Friday’s is kind of noisy.

Plato’s Diner in College Park is open late, if you don’t mind diner-type food. Seven Seas in College Park is good Chinese food, but it finishes serving at 10:00, at least on weekdays.

So, what say we agree on Chevy’s and start trying to nail down a date?

Cecil said it. I believe it. That settles it.

WoW! That was post 400! I was just having a weird thought. If we do a weekend night, then Falcon and SqrlCub can’t come, Satan won’t make it up and Tris will be less happy. OTOH, most of the rest would, I think, prefer Fri. or Sat. I can go anytime. How would a Sunday night work? Maybe we could meet from 6-10 or so. Not too late for work the next day, and still kinda a weekend, kinda not. Thoughts?

Cecil said it. I believe it. That settles it.

Is the Royal Gormet a buffet-style place? All you can eat & no waiters- that would be kinda cool. But Chevy’s is okay too- what is that, tex-mex?

Sunday is no worse than any weekday evening, and since we seem to be leaning towards the weekday evenings for maximum attendance, we need to set the arrival time fairly early, like 6:00. If it ends up being a weekday, would most people just come straight from work?

Plan A: Monday 5/29 is a holiday, so would that permit the maximum number of people at attend on the Sunday prior and not have to check out too early?

Plan B: If not Sunday 5/28, then what about Monday? Since it is a holiday, most (all?) of us don’t work and could meet in the middle of the day (say, 3-8, getting us all home before our bedtimes.

Oo, cool, another get together. I’ll try to make it in any case, but would anyone have any serious objections to pushing back to the second week in June? That’s when Bluesman comes home, and I know he’d really love to be there too.

Being as I take every three-day holiday to see Drain bead, I would be unable to attend if it was that weekend, but please, do not make this hard on you for my benefit. I’m an interloper, after all…

However, That IS the only weekend I will not be around that month.
