I was a Dad, too. Pepper Mill had to go out of state for a funeral, leaving me with MilliCal.
we went Candlepin Bowling, bought shoes, visited her cousains, walked around Rockport, saw Ice Age II, got hand-made dark chocolate peanut butter cups for Pepper Mill.
We were going to attend a haunted cemetary tour, but that got called off. MilliCal was also setting up a wedding between two of our cats while I slept on Sunday, but that didn’t come off, either.
I saw a matinee of the musical Dusty, which was much, much better than I had expected it to be. After we went and ate at a Moroccan restaurant on the water. We arrived for happy hour (a stroke of luck) and drank cocktails (Cosmopolitans and Long Island Iced Teas) before tucking into Fried Almond Crusted Haloumi with a Quince sauce, Soft Shell Mud Crabs (fried in a tempura like batter) with a citrus sauce, Duck with caramelized onions and falafel fritters and a Lamb Tajine. We couldn’t resist Turkish coffee and the trio of Creme Brulees to finish.
On Sunday I picked up my son and dragged him off to see Inside Man because the magazine at work wants a movie review. We both thoroughly enjoyed it . We went back to my place and I cooked us lasagne, a salad and made some garlic bread out of a bit of leftover french bread.
It would seem I used too much garlic all round as I had the most agonizing heartburn all last night. Although I was sure I had some Gaviscon or Mylanta at home from years ago, I didn’t. I also didn’t have any milk. So I didn’t get mush sleep.
Nothing too exciting. But I was happy - I got up early both days. Well, not exceedingly early, but early for me. Usually I loll in bed the weekends, which sounds great in theory, but really throws me off for the day. It’s not like I have a lot to do, but it can feel strange to be getting up at noon.
Anyway, I got up and worked out on the treadmill on Saturday morning (yay me!), and got myself up for church Sunday. Not a big deal to most, but it gave me a good start to both days, and made me feel I accomplished SOMETHING over the weekend.
I cleaned my apartment, and found a pair of earrings I’d given up on as “lost.” They were actually tangled up in some socks that were under the dresser. I like the earrings–they were originally a friendship necklace made of individual black/white pieces that join to make a yin/yang sign. I asked the nice lady if she could put then on French hooks for me, and she just stared, obviously never having thought of such a thing. I’m glad I found them.
I also lit a candle, then threw the wooden match into a nearly empty Glade glass candle container with a lot of other used wooden matches. Well, this match must not have been totally out, cause it ignited the other matches and the left over wax in a fifteen minute blaze that was totally awesome. I’ve kept the blackened Glade glass candle as a souvenir (take that, Thomas Kinkade)
Let’s see. I worked, ran errands, fixed the bed, made bacon cheddar steakburgers, cleaned up a bit, chatted online, cuddled with Jayjay while watching “Liza with a Z”, and petted the bunny. Now that I write it down, it actually looks like alot!
Finished a knitting project that will be added to the pile of knitted wool winter wear going to a Russian Orphanage for kids.
Celebrated my FIL’s 65th birthday and did the majority of the setting up and stuff even though I am not his daughter and he essentially drives me batshitcrazy. I did it for my husband. and she showed up late with nothing for the surprise party except a card and did nothing for clean up at all and left at the same time I did, after everyone else. Oh, please don’t notice me trotting out to your mom’s car for the 15th time with all the shit she brought that has to be stowed away. Oh, and her her prefect twins party last week ( the day before her mother’s birthday - the mother who is essentially raising her children for her for free) she didn’t even have a cake or anything. We had to whip one up before the party. Somehow, neither situations irritated me to the point of ruining anything at all. How I have grown. Who Knew.
Also sold the extra birthday cake we had bought to another club member for next weeks get together. ( yay!)
On the advice of a friend, I took up the “Couch-to-5k” training program at the Cool Running site. I had tried it a couple of times before over the last couple of years, but certain life events threw me off my training.
This time, I did it just as he suggested. Over the course of ten weeks, I went from sitting on my ass and feeling fat and unhealthy to begin able to sustain a jog for 30+ minutes. About three weeks into my training, I registered for the Seal Beach 5k run.
With a time of 35:01, I came in 784th place. I couldn’t be prouder.
YAY you!
You couldn’t get me to run if you strapped a raw steak and covered me with A-1 before setting me in front of a pack of pit bulls and chihuahua’s. I’d rather be eaten alive than run. Gah.
I spent a few hours as a passenger while my son drove. He’s got his permit, but he needs practice. He did pretty good - and we had a lot of fun just driving around and talking.
Yes - a teenaged boy who talks to his mother!!!
Saturday just hung around waiting for Zyada to pass her cold to me. (Well, I reheated some home-made soup for her.) Sunday she felt better, so we went to the Fort Worth Japanese Garden for the festival and caught the Japanese drummers (great stuff!). We went to compliment one teen-age guy on his playing, because he’s got the fire in him, and discovered that up close he looks about twelve. Zyada said that when she gets her belly-dance troupe going, she’d like to put on a show with the drummers; the teen-ager perked up for that! Then we walked around and took some more pictures and headed home. She’s all excited about the dance troupe now, and plans to start making calls.
On Sunday afternoon I took my roommate into New York to see Rent for her birthday. Fantastic show, though of course thoroughly depressing–but we knew that was coming. Then I went to bed early. I’m not sure which was better.
Made a terrific and healthy beef stew in our crockpot that tasted great after simmering on high for about 5 hours.
Went to my husband’s bowling league banquet and awards ceremony, and watched him win two patches, a pin, and 15 bucks, which made him more glowingly proud than I’ve ever seen him.
Agreed to loan $300.00 to my best friend who desperately needs it, and then realized that I could afford to loan said $300.00, which made me pretty damn proud.
I made a friend a mosaic stepping stone for her garden yesterday. Her oldest son has basically divorced himself from their family (long story, won’t get into it). Anyway, she’s a lovely woman, been to hell and back, and she has an amazing backyard garden which is her pride and joy. So I made her a personalized stone to add to it. I haven’t given it to her yet, but I can’t wait to.
I went to my son’s Basketball awards ceremony - He received the award for “most improved player” and it’s not like he sucked to begin with either, he just really “got” it all of a sudden. We are proud. Listened to Wait, Wait, Dont tell me on the radio. Cooked for my family a little bit and liked it. Went to the local Symphony Saturday night. Sat around Sunday morning drinking coffee while we all read the paper to each other. Also, I finsished an afghan that my grandmother started I don’t know how many years ago (She died in '97). That really felt good to do almost like I got a piece of her back.
Wal-Mart put these wireless Atari things on sale for $4.00. It has Ms. Pac Man, Galiga, two race car games, some cat and mouse game, and two other games on it.
We started out playing my friend’s father’s garage converted into a bar. We took turns on Ms. Pac Man and the Bowflex. A few hours later, it was Galiga and beer.
My friend’s father made high score on the race car game, my friend’s mom made high score on cat and mouse bame, I dominated at the beer and Galiga.
2 30 packs and 8 batteries. What an awesome Saturday night!
Every other Friday I have off so I slept late, did the yard, played golf and then when the wife was gone put on the Eagles DVD and played guitar to their concert.
Saturday, drove to Galveston and hit the rainforest, IMAX and aquarium at Moody, ate a great seafood supper and walked the beach.
Sunday, beach again, then NASA. Got home, cracked open a bottle of cab and puttered around the yard with my daughter. All in all, pretty nice and relaxing.
