Birthdays and Memories, A Bittersweet MMP

I’ve done nothing all day, and I enjoyed it. Just as well, the thermometer is showing 102. I got a 12 pack of Yuengling and some chips and salsa for rig’s party.

Grood vibes and prayers on the job hunt for Drae and Mika(neat song, too.)

I’ll have a Haze bar, too for dessert.

I’m a twin, and when I was a child I resented having to share my birthday. The worst was the kids whose parents had only bought one present that we had to “share”. My mom would occasionally have to go out afterwards and buy another.

But our last birthday party was when we were about 12 years old. After that we went out with friends for our birthday, but never had a birthday party at home ever again. I had my first and only “solo” birthday party when I turned 18. I was living in Germany with a host family at the time. My sister was 6000 miles away. It was wonderful.

Nowadays, though, the most important thing about my birthday is the person I share it with. My sister and I always call each other, if we are not hanging out. Funny that I used to resent sharing my birthday, and now it is the best thing about it.

Is it me or does hummus not taste like much of anything? I taste a faint garlic taste and that’s it. I dont’ mind coucous.
Ya’ll don’t mind if I go take a nap in the middle of my party, do you? I am sleepy today–and have class in 3 hours.

Keep the noise down or the cops will show up.

Speaking of twins and birthdays – not a twin, but the proud co-creator of a pair. We celebrated their birthdays together for the first 9 years.

This year they turned 10, and one of the perks was – they got separate parties! One a week before the actual date, one a week after, and each one got to do their own thing.

They loved it.

In 10 years they’ll probably want to celebrate together again

Home time soon. This day went surprisingly fast. Not that I’m complaining or anything.

LiLi - It’s 34° freakin’ degrees (~93F) or 38 (100) with the humidity out there – but don’t look at me this time. This is a touch too warm and way too humid even for me. I’ve called for some clouds 'n stuff, but they might take a day or two to get here.

SwampBeer - Actually, there was one time my paternal grandparents made fart blossoms. Being that I hate fart blossoms I declined. But also being that I was young and subject to the wholly unreasonable rules and regulations of being a guest at someone’s house, I was also told to eat them. Gramma made some sort of veloutte or bechamel sauce (it was whitish and creamy, anyway) of some kind for them though, which I liberally doused them with. To my amazement, they almost masked the taste. Not enough to prevent the occasional reflex gag, but it did allow me to choke down the evil buds while managing to keep the bile from reaching high tide. I politely declined on seconds, however. And by “politely” I mean “ran screaming outside, straight through a wall, leaving a comical outline of myself through which you could see me disappear over the horizon.” Oh, and congrats on the first quasi-day of work! Sounds interesting. And initially dull. But…beer.

Mika - Mmm. Garam masala. That yogurt thing almost sounds like the Indian version of Tzatziki, which is also made with a yogurt/cucumber base. (Did I mention I love Indian food? Well, I haven’t tried a great variety, but I’ve really liked what I’ve had. Except paneer by itself; it’s a little too “rich” tasting on its own, but in curried spinach or peas or whathaveyou it’s nice. I’ll go to great lengths for a dish of some murgh malai tikka (did I spell that right?) and a stack of nan, though. It’s tortuously calorie-laden, but I can’t help myself. The apple cake sounds interesting though. Like apple pie, but…moist and fluffy.

Alright, time for me to pack up and go home. Yay!

Aww, wonderful OP, Rigs, and beautiful tribute to your twin sisters. BTW, you share the exact same birthday as my youngest brother! He too will be 45 on Thursday, and I’m glad that he’s still around. He’s had problems with alcohol and a couple of years ago actually did 6 months in jail for violating a restraining order. He seems to have turned himself around now though, thankfully.

My Mom used to make the best birthday cakes! We’re partial to chocolate and one year she made a chocolate cake with boiled white frosting–that’s the kind that hardens up so it crunches when you eat it and it’s -pure- sugar. lol Sorry it’s definitely not for diabetics! I still remember that cake, and I think it was probably close to 50 years ago that it was made.

I think I’ll bring some appetizers: some spinach dip and pita bread, maybe some pigs-in-a-blanket (I hear tell they’re popular in the mid-west  They’re popular here too) and a sliced cheese and fruit tray. And of course the chocolate cake with boiled frosting. Good thing it’s virtual, though.

Happy Birthday Rigs!!!

A toast to the Birthday Girl: Never lie, cheat or steal, but if you must, steal a kiss, cheat death, and lie with someone you love!

I am sorry to give you another worry about your insides Drae. It’s probably not your appendix, unless you are curled into the fetal position and an ache in your lower right abdomen. Feel better, dear.

I haven’t lost a sibling to death…yet, but I have for all intents and purposes lost both of my brothers (my only blood siblings) years ago to drugs, crime and mental illness. I am often very sad about their situations, but we all make our own paths, and while our upbringing was horrific, I managed to make a fairly normal life for myself, even if I did run away to Alaska. Probably because I ran away to Alaska.

Yeah, tulips and some daffodils in July, it’s a lovely (not) day, 48F and pouring rain. I had one crocus out of 100 bulbs I planted, and three scilla out of the same amount of bulbs. The winter was very cold and the “spring” very wet. There was a huge die off of baby deer, and there are hardly any salmonberry bushes with leaves, let alone blossoms, just huge patches of dead sticks. I thought last summer was cold and wet, but this year is even worse. The fish runs aren’t hitting, which means that skiffman will be heading out to the Bering Sea this autumn and winter. :frowning: He is going to go out for a moose if time permits, so we won’t have to live off fish and crab. Yeah, y’all say “poor kai, eating all that salmon, halibut and king crab” but there are truly times I would kill for a burger or even a hot dog.

I need to get on the ball, I have been loafing all morning, which is what one ought to do on such a grey day, but I’ll peek back in later and see what you all have been up to.

Ta!

I believe we have a newcomer to the MMP!

Ok - her(?) nickname is gonna be…hmmm… Nemo! Any other suggestions? (Please send chocolate love offerings to FCM - she’s the old broad with the blond hair over in the corner… <I keed!> - beerverages to assorted people including Swampy, 'cept I don’t think he needs them anymore since he gets all that free beer now…)

Welcome, Nemo! (If you’ve been here before, welcome back!)

Welcome, Nemo! (If you’ve been here before, welcome back!)

Dolores and** Kai**–If I forgot you earlier, I apologize. Here, have a beer.
I am UP from my nap, having been awoken by the patio furniture blowing around. Tis a storm a-brwein’ out there. I turned OFF the AC (I really prefer fresh air, but hate heat and humidity) and we are waiting for Dorothy and Toto now.
And the wind seems to have died down now. Pooh.

How we doin’ on food? I’ve made some rumaki, and those lil mushroom quiche thingies that taste so good. And look! Crab dip!
More sambuca, dammit! <throws glass in fireplace>*

*I’ve always wanted to do that-what culture does that-Russian? I love it (but don’t want to clean it up)

I think it’s the greeks, rigs.

Either way, it sounds fun, I agree :: tossing my glass in ::

I was inside the healthclub, working out and I saw that it looked dark out, but I have the I-Pod blasting in my ears while I’m there, so if there was thunder, I missed it. Then, afterwards, showering, I was in a basement. I came back upstairs, and the girl at the desk said “have a safe trip home”, at which I looked out and said “HOLY COW” because it was blacker than black out, and there was lightning everywhere.

I waited the bad part out inside.

I got some bad news today - a good friend of mine, one of our assistant principals - her son was diagnosed with leukemia last week. I remember when he was born, no more than 2 years ago - I remember because she had him right as summer came. He’s in chemo now, and apparently responding ok. They set one of those CaringBridge web pages up for him - so they can update people, there’s a guestbook, and all that.

I think Luke needs some MMP Good Wishes, if y’all don’t mind.

Well, I’m home. (Have been for an hour, actually) Dinner tonight is Italian-style cabbage rolls (that’s just ordinary cabbage rolls in tomato sauce, but with mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses melted over top) with a nice mixed salad and Spring Herb Italian dressing. Tasty! Gotta do laundry tonight though.

Rigs - Could be Greek (possibly Roma). They like breaking dishes on special occasions.

Herbs - Ooh, spinach dip. With veggies and/or or hunks of pumpernickel, and served in a partially hollowed-out pumpernickel round. That stuff is awesome.

Special one–that sounds like a great idea for twins.

To those here who have lost a sib (or just had to share a Bday and didn’t want to)–my sympathies. It’s a bit weird–I never know what to say when people ask me how many brothers and sisters I have…

Off to class. The thunder is getting rumblier (is so a word), so perhaps we’ll have a storm yet.

Sorry to hear about the lil guy and his leukemia. They can do alot with leukemia today, and thank goodness.

At least the sky wasn’t “oooh, we might be in for a tornado” green.

Speaking of green… It looks like nobody told all of these baseball fans roaming around San Francisco that cars will start moving when the light goes green, and they won’t patiently wait for them (the fans) to mosey on over to the curb.

Seriously - there are people wandering out into the streets to take pictures of fire trucks and streetcars and nearly getting run over, not to mention starting to cross the street when the red hand has gone solid, meaning they’re the length of a yellow light away from being mowed down by a bus. I can understand taking pictures of streetcars as I don’t think any other cities in the world run as many historic streetcars in daily service, but fire trucks??

At least the game they’re all here to see is tomorrow, so they’ll be gone and we’ll be back to our usual level of weird.

How about “I’m the <oldest/youngest/middle> of <# of sibs> but my <sister/brother> died <X> years ago.” Or words to that effect. Of course, it could lead to either an uncomfortable silence or questions you’d rather not deal with.

**FCD ** is snoring on the love seat. I don’t understand why he won’t go watch TV in bed, so if he falls asleep, he doesn’t have to get up and move. Men - sheesh!

The dessert fairy forgot to deliver my hot fudge sundae. Da noive!!!

too hot and tired to really read the whole thread - the a/c is definitely caput (damn birds) but at least the bedroom a/c (sort of) works - but it was installed at a bad angle and drips onto (the pile of paper towels I’ve stacked under it on) the rug.

apprpropriate reactions all around - I’m heading into the a/c

Dear Lord. I am gone for a few hours and in the meantime have been reduced to a dessert!I am not a dessert! I am a human being!

(That’s actually an inside joke between Scottish Darling and I. We were drunk at a party once and she balanced a glass on my head and said, “You are the perfect height for a tray.” And then I drew myself up and said with great dignity, “I am not a tray. I am a human being.” For some reason that struck both of us as hilarious. Yeah, we were both really drunk.)

MBG, crazy storm, eh? I was out on the beach and actually saw it approach. I scrambled for a coffee shop and avoided getting poured on. It was actually kinda cool.

Best wishes for you, 'Mika!!

I had steak, rice and green beans for dinner, and now I’m having a Rabid Duck for dessert.

Haze, that wiil teach you to pur honey on yourself and crawl into a chocolate sub.

Rosie, be cool.

MBG, I’ll keep Luke in my prayers.

rigs, great party!I brought pie, too.

See in my culture, though, celebrating early is Just. Not. Done. It’s bad luck, means you might not make it to see that birthday after all.

Mindfield, Hindi is pretty phonetic so don’t be overly concerned about spelling. And I too cannot eat paneer directly, but I love it in saag-paneer. And i do seem to remember that you like Indian food.

MBG, I am so sorrry to hear about your friend and her little son. How sad. They’ll be in my thoughts.

I submitted my resume & cover letter around 4:30 today. Here’s hoping!

Read the OP this morning and nearly cried. That was not boring, rigs; it was beautiful.

::raises glass to Leigh, Sandy & rigs::

Is it silly that I’ve been pondering what to bring to the party? For now, put me down for beer. I have some Bitburger in the fridge. I’ll think of something more exciting as the week progresses, I’m sure. (Chocolate…do we have enough chocolate?)

rosie, are you a definite MMP-starter next week? BooFae asked specifically for the 23rd and MamaTigs has reserved October 1, so unless rosie isn’t starting on the 16th, ursus newlyemployedus will start on the 30th. Which gives him plenty of time for further “research.”

Sorry about your friend’s son, MBG. Good thoughts and prayers headed out for little Luke.

Good luck with the job stuff to Drae (how was the interview?) and Meeks (let us know when you make it to the interview stage).

Hope you’re able to keep kinda cool, rosie posie.

Welcome back, kai! We’ve missed you.

I was up way too late last night (which is what happens when someone asks you at 9:00 p.m. whether you want to stay for dinner). Why didn’t I think to take the first couple hours of the day off this morning?

It didn’t get quite as hot as threatened today and is supposed to be about the same tomorrow before the storms are visited upon us. I’m off on Wednesday, so I’m hoping the storms will hold off till afternoon when I’m in the theater watching Harry Potter.

There’s more, but I’m falling asleep. So…tomorrow?
