Laundry is done. Dinner is et. Shower to commence once my food has settled satisfactorily.
Mika - Saag looks interesting. I think I’d prefer it with spinach leaves instead of mustard leaves though. I don’t know what mustard leaves taste like, but if they’re as sharp as mustard seed, I think it might be a bit much. Plus, I like curried spinach. To say that Hindi is very phonetic, is that to say that the rules of spelling aren’t as rigidly defined? (As they transcribe into the Arabic alphabet, anyway)
FCM–that leads to awkward silence AND questions I’d rather not share with people I’m getting to know. I usually just say 4 and me and leave it at that.
We can NEVER have enough chocolate. Remember, as hostess, I get to keep the leftovers! I like milk choc with nuts (no raisins), but will take dark as well. Y’all can keep the white stuff.
gt–I didn’t mean to make you cry! Here, have a cookie.
Haze–I’d rather be a dessert than a tray. Then again, a dessert tray blends both worlds. Neat.
Off to bed soon. Another boring class is over. Yay.
I made a mistake. Sandy died when I was 36, and she was 41, not 39. :o (although this never looked embarassed to me-it looks like I’m singing)
Carry on.
I actually do usually make it with either spinach alone or a mix of spinach and mustard leaves. Mustard leaves are a bit sharp but nowhere near the seeds. I won’t even eat the seeds; they’re too gross.
Small dissertation on writing Hindi:
As for the phonetic bit. Someone scolded me once for saying Hindi was a phonetic language. I guess what they meant is there *are *certain “proper” ways to spell things, in our language. But just because there are established proper ways doesn’t mean it’s not written by sound. I sound out words I don’t know to write them, and that’s the way I learn to write them.
So when you transcribe into English, you get a weird sort of thing. For example we have no stand-alone consonants. ‘K’ is rendered as ‘Ka’, with a very very short a. If you want to write “Kaa”, you add the vowel ‘A’ at that pont. Every consonant is like that, so you get, ‘Ga’, ‘Ba’, ‘Da’, etc.
So when you see something like “Garam”, those 'a’s are the short ones. The only way to transcribe it is using one a or two a’s. If you want to write a long a you transcribe as Lagaan, for example.
In Hindi, then, you would write garam literally as g,r,m, and lagaan as l,g,a,n. And those little a’s come sort of pre-packaged.
Mmm. Indian food. Someone pass the naan and aloo gobi, please.
It’s still really hot and sticky here. I want fall. Fall is nice. Fall is more than ten degrees cooler.
Haze, Mr. Lissar uses me as a chinrest. I’m 5"3 or so, so I’m exactly a foot shorter than him. I have a feeling that no matter how fat I get, I’ll always look tiny to him.
Time for bed. All sleepy.
Mika - You know, that kind of explains a lot about when I hear people speak in Hindi. The language sounds very guttural, with consonant sounds seeming to be packed tightly around brief vowels, with fewer enunciated vowels than English, resulting in something that sounds very jumbled to someone who doesn’t know the first thing about the language – like me. Gujarati and Urdu sound very much like it to me, too – but then my ears are completely untrained, so that’s probably obvious.
And since we’re on the topic of all things Indian, here’s an earworm I’ve been infected with recently. I’m not into Indian music in general, but for some reason this one sticks in my head. Plus, Daler Mehndi just looks so damn happy. (And since we’re talking about phonetics in Hindi, here’s a “translation” of the song based on what the words sound kinda like in Engilsh. It’s actually quite funny!)
LiLi - Pass the palak paneer while we’re at it.
That was truly a poignant OP, Rigs. Here’s to you and your sisters ::raises glass::
Hmm, I’ll have to think a little on what to bring to the shindig for eats, but how about if we start off with some mojitos to drink? The perfect drink for a hot day, refreshing, slightly minty, with a little lime taste.
Good luck to you Mika on the job. I hope you get it.
How did the interview go Drae?
Cellodude and Meli, I’m glad that at least **Meli’s ** parents are supportive of the both of you.
FCM, ummmm, I’m a Taurus too. I’m not full of bull; bullheaded maybe, but not full of bull.
SCL, sending more good wishes to your friend Libby.
Also good healing thoughts being sent to Luke.
So, Swampy, whatcha gonna do when the cops pull you over and accuse you of smelling like a brewery, huh?
Temps are supposed to reach 96 friggin’ degree here on Wednesday. Maybe even higher inland. That is HAWWWWWT for these here parts.
My daughter is now Red Cross volunteer at the hospital. She starts on Monday and already has her badge. She only needs 20 hours, but I told her it would be better to work at least 40 hours. She’ll be greeting and directing patients and helping with clerical duties. It’ll be a good experience for her.
Nothing much else going on here in Taterland. I think I’ll watch a little TV now.
Mindfield, I’ve heard that song before and love it. Those guys are great - really Punjabi Sikhs.
'Night all. I may be a night person but I am NOT a morning person so when I pry my eyes open enough you’ll see me again.
Well, I managed to shower and dress, tend to the animals needs, made my bed, talked to my own version of a quazi daughter, Pizza Hut made dinner and brought it to the front door, read a little more of my new Dean Koontz, and surfed the 'net and the Dope. Woo and hoo.
I bought one of the new fangled air fresheners that automatically spay themselves. It freaks the dogs out! Poor Mischa will get comfy in his bed next to mine, and the freshener will whish and he will leap out of bed. After a few minutes he will get up his nerve to get back into his bed, get comfy, and then whish and off he goes again. I guess I should feel badly that this is funny to me, huh?
I clicked on your link MBG but only got to the main page. Prayers to Luke and his family.
How are you feeling li-li? As we are on the final countdown for my baby girl’s baby girl’s arrival I think of you often. I hope that you are getting over the morning sickness and moving toward feeling tinyninjachef’s first disernable movements.
Have I told everyone that my granddaughter’s name is Mattea Elizabeth, and she is due August 15th? I will be traveling to Anchorage and will be present for her birth, and I am sooooo excited! I have bought out Babies R Us, as have my parents and her daddy’s parents and my grandmother. My Princess is going to have a Princess of her own!
And still the rain falls. I think I am going to get cozy and finish my Koontz book and either retire early or watch movies until I fall asleep. Everyone have a good night and I’ll see you all tomorrow.
Looks like a fun party! I’m fashionably late, as usual. I brought some N.O.T. salad with sour cream dressing. LiLi, the almond cake with raspberries sounds lovely! Do you have any of that whipped-cream-in-a-can to go on top? I could maybe go for some apple cake and trifle too. And maybe one of those mojitos. I love mojitos. And felafel. It all sounds good.
rigby, that was a sweet but sad OP. I hope you have a happy birthday anyways. Diabetes sucks.
taxi, I hope tomorrow is a better day. Too bad the prank didn’t work out–some people are just no fun! I hope the ear drops are going okay!
What a brilliant child! So wise for one so young. I do like the Zoo for Morons idea–we could put them all in cages, with little labels with what kind of moron they are (driverus rudus, idiotus impatientus, stuff like that).
Mika, good luck with the job interview! I’m working on a job application…I’m not sure if I really want it, but it doesn’t hurt to try.
Best wishes to Libby and Luke, and anyone else who’s sick and needs some healing thoughts!
kai, congrats on the soon-to-be grandbaby! August 15 isn’t that far away! You’re going to have lots of pictures, right? We need cute baby pictures!
Bolding mine: bwahahahahahahaha! I would think something that could spay itself would freak the dogs out. They’re probably thinking, “Uh-uh, no way, no how!”
rigs, you throw a great party! I love it here. I get to go to a party without leaving my house. And I’ll bring what I always bring to parties. . . Marie Callender’s apple pie. It’s my standard.
Haze, don’t listen to the guys (yeah, I know they’re hard to ignore) but I think your real honey story was much more hilarious. It reminds me of those ketchup commercials when the bottles were glass and they pounded on the bottom of the bottle over and over, but when they finally tried to look to see what was causing it to get stuck, the ketchup would fall all over their face. Great stuff! Maybe it’s not so funny when it happens to you, huh?
swampy, your orientation sounds fascinating. While you’re describing it, I’m trying to imagine what you’ll be doing there. I haven’t figured it out yet.
Special1, I can’t make our late-night rendezvous tonight. It’s been a long day. I’ll see you tomorrow.
She’s an intellectual minority which always means having to know about “the others” just to preserve your own; living in our culture you learn about Christianity willy-nilly from TV and movies (what you learn is likely to be wrong, though) and I suspect she’s the kind of person who doesn’t take things at face value… if she sees contradictory messages from a single source, she’ll dig to see which is what.

oso pantanoso, I used to work in a factory where the plumbers were subcontractors. This being a chemical factory which mixed poisonous liquids, explosive solids and water to make perfectly-safe latex paint, we had a lot of plumbing. Once we got two new plumbers (to replace the regular ones during vacation) and one of them, who until then had done construction work, was complaining at lunch of his first day about having to listen to the safety presentations and so forth. We looked at him like this
and his mate said “you realize you get paid by the month and not per meter of pipe installed, right? We’re spending our first day sitting on our asses in an air conditioned room and getting paid for it! Welcome to the wonderful world of monthly pay.”
Sean, I don’t get to watch it from my balcony, I’m seeing it on TV. There isn’t a single balcony in Pamplona from which you’d be able to see it all. I can see a bit of the runs in Tudela from Mom’s balcony; our previous flat was right on the Tudela run so when we were there we could see about half of it. But Tudela’s path is much wider than Pamplona’s, has 1/20 the people and every runner speaks Spanish.
or something far less PG . . .
::Pries eyes open:: good morning, world. I guess…
Yes, I’m not quite my cheery morning self, why do you ask? It may have something to do with working from home until 1 AM yesterday (today)
At least I think stuff is under control…
**Roo **-- awwwwww… I miss you You ou’re not avoiding me, are you?
**Swampy **-- here’s to you successfully doubling your tenure at Miller today!
**Rigs **-- it’s OK, I’ll take any white chocolate the guests bring off of your hands. I’ll also bring some more Hazelnut Milk Chocolate (see, we told you you’re a dessert. Deal! :p)
Nava What, no more Bull from you today?
Everybody else… have a good night and/or a great day.
a little smilie happy today, aren’t you?
:smack: And I previewed and corrected other misspellings! I blame it on the rain.
Hey, that sounds like a song…oh yeah, it is!
Awww. Oh wait, I made it. That was worth staying up for. Now I can sleep in peace. Good night! And hugs to chase away the grumps.
rosie, what could you be thinking?! You know, those two in your post don’t look so innocent either.
**Rosie **-- yeah, a bit smiley-heavy, wasn’t it? Oh well. I’ll get to my coffee soon, I swear. MAybe then I’ll wake up!
And you’ll be amazed what passes for PG these days!
**Roo **-- a hug {{{Roo}}} and Good Night See you in the morning!
Work beckons. It promises to be another lovely day here. Not.
(counts) Just one smiley. And it’s for Roo, so that’s OK, yes, Rosie-mom?
