Multiple log-in requests here too.
The board refused to log me in. This post is after three attempts just now. Earlier today I gave up after being bounced when it told me to log in again . . . and again . . . and again. . . .
That’s happening often for me. I thought quotes were done on my side, not the server, so I thought it was my fault.
Dang! For the umpteenth time everybody, I’ve been reporting this particular problem since January! But fer sure, it’s suddenly gotten much worse, not to mention all the other bizarro symptoms that so many users are reporting lately.
Are the admins, having told us to hang tight until things get resolved, still following this thread? Ed Zotti? TubaDiva? I found it believable that it was just overloaded servers a month ago, when things weren’t this bad, and a few people were complaining of slow response times.
But it’s gotten over the top lately. There are so many new and weird symptoms showing up just lately all of a sudden, and happening to so many users so often — and it’s all gotten so bad so quickly just lately. Can server overload be the explanation for that? Server overloads would usually show up very gradually over time as usage increases (which is what seemed to be happening up until about a month ago). But now, very abruptly, a whole lot seems to have gone to shit. I think there must be something more insidious going on. The whole . . . something . . . seems to have gotten corrupted somewhere.
I think there must be an as-yet-undiagnosed epidemic of Mad Hamster Disease on the loose at SDMB HQ.
Or, maybe there’s another explanation (also insidious):
It’s the damn NSA sucking up all the server CPU time at the back door! Not to mention all the disappearing posts that they’re sucking up! (ETA: And a buggy implementation of their back door access portal too, causing all the other strange bugs we’re seeing!)
That IT, isn’t it? TPTB can’t and won’t tell us that of course! Which just proves it of course!
We’re all doomed.
I’ve clicked on the IMHO forum a couple times tonight and I’m getting no new posts for over 24 hours. I’m missing out on stuff!! It’s making me a little batty.
If you look at the IMHO forum page, it looks like nothing’s been posted for hours, but if you click the individual threads you’ll see that that’s not true. For example the thread about being attracted to Asian women looks like it only has two pages from the forum page, but if you click on it, you can see it has three pages.
The board is going cuckoo for cocoa puffs, yeah. Hopefully something gets fixed soon, because I have a feeling that before too much longer it’s just going to start smoking and then go up in a blaze of hamster-fueled glory.
Never mind.
Why? They’ll just assume this is normal.
ETA: Well, now this post makes no sense. Thanks.
I’ve been experiencing constant login hassles too, most annoyingly with trying to edit a post. It thinks I’m logged in so it lets me edit, but then it thinks I’m not logged in so it doesn’t let me save the edit.
I’ve been seeing some of the same things, not showing new posts unless I’m in the thread, and the like. However, I haven’t been able to get to the Home page in a couple of days. I have to come straight to the boards.
Sort-of partial work-around: When that happens, just click on your browser’s BACK button to go back to the page where you typed in your edits, and click on Save Changes again. You might still have to try this several times before it works, but I’ve always been able to save my changes after a few tries. Still a PITA, but it’s easier than typing in your user name and password over and over.
Likewise when you are trying to submit a new post.
Like this one.
Same log-in hassles for me, and the Dope showing there have been new posts in threads that there actually haven’t been, and also taking me to older and not the more recent posts in threads I’m following. Grrr.
Today’s irritations - going to a forum keeps on showing me the last posts as having been made June 10th, and a post that I selected for quoting keeps on coming up every time I respond to a thread. And the problem with very few new threads coming up from the “Show New Posts” search continues.
Things are a total mess today and were yesterday as well. I hope this is going to get fixed sooner rather than later as if not there won’t be much left of our community.
I’m speculating that the one of the reasons the server is flaky is because of all of the those additional log in requests. Normally, when I log in, and jump to the my subscriptions (figure about five or six requests) I’ll maybe hit the server once every couple of minutes.
Based on that, I would assume that the server(s) are getting overloaded because of the frequent, recurring requests.
I have no idea what I’m looking at. There’s no logic to how the threads are arranged, I can’t tell if they have new posts or not, it’s a complete shamozzle.
The thing I’m seeing that’s most interesting is the quoted post not appearing in the message textbox when I click reply. It works seemingly only every other time.
I’m just surprised that that’s a problem. It’s kinda interesting how vBulletin acts under strain.
I do know that some vBulletin admins say that allowing namechanges causes problems because you have to run this process that updates the entire database. They say that not updating will cause problems along the line. So they won’t allow namechanges under any circumstances. Granted, this is with vBulletin 4.
I bring it up not because it is causing the current problems, but as something to consider after upgrading. Maybe Jerry can check and see if namechanges are particularly taxing.]
It’s just that the current problems reminded me of this. I’d wanted to recommend testing that for a long time, to see if it was hurting us.
