My little bit of weirdness: when I click to go into say - mpsims I get a page with all the stickies and stuff but no threads. I finally worked out that hitting refresh made the threads appear. This is the first problem I have noticed so far.
That’s a start, but can they be bred with tentacles and poisonous fangs?
What? We need a reason?
Same here, even though all of my subscribed threads have post-06/10 posts. 06/10 seems to be some magic cutoff date. Did the hamsters escape thru a Tom, Dick or Harry tunnel on that date?
That only happened sometimes a few days ago. Today, it’s happening all the time. I never got New Posts to work. Tapatalk is still working, though.
The Quote function still isn’t working. I just tried it with Musicat’s post, just above this one.
I just checked, and the last post on that date happened at 1704 hrs PST. Anyone have a later post on their “6/10” page?
It works for me sometimes, not other times. As you can see, it just worked here. But one earlier did not.
You guys might want to check this out if you haven’t already: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/announcement.php?f=2
Finally, we can hope for a fix.
Huh. And it just worked for me, as you see.
Well, thanks, Anonymous User, and let’s hope for a longterm fix.
Jerry’s announcement indicates that they’ve replicated the database to slaves. From the symptoms, I think it’s a reasonable hypothesis that one/some of them stopped updating as of June 10th, leading to something like a race condition. When your request goes to an updated database, everything works fine. When it goes to a stuck one, it has no knowledge of posts past June 10th, so it can’t quote posts newer than that or display forum indices properly. Refresh and you may get the updated database or you may get the stuck one again. Totally random from the user perspective.
I am not a SQL expert, but this kind of behavior rings a bell with my considerable experience on other database managers.
Let’s say you want to change the user name on multiple posts. Sounds easy – just traverse all posts for user name X and replace with user name Y.
But if you have a total of a zillion posts for all users, and only a few hundred for user name X, why page thru all zillion when, using an index or pointer file, only a few hundred need be checked?
But there’s a gotcha with this method. If you are using a dynamic index on the user name field, and you change the name for one record, you will then skip to the next record in the newly ordered index, which may not be the next one in the original sequence!
When you finish the process, you may have inadvertently skipped over some records, and you may have screwed up the index as well. I can certainly see how this might lead to problems down the road.
There are solutions, but they can be tricky. Suffice to say an Introduction to Computer 101 programmer probably won’t know how to tackle this without some experience.
If the quote doesn’t appear in the reply box, refresh the reply box and it will eventually appear.
My latest time is 1756 CST. That would be 1556 PST, right?
And the quote function didn’t work for Czarcasm’s post until the third try.
I’m not having any login problems, I login automatically when I open the home page, But I am having the problems with quoting and going to a board and seeing no threads in there except the stickies.
Notices of technical problems/issues on this board are all over the board.
Like here:
The board is (temporarily) broken.
Attempts are being made to resolve these issues as quickly as circumstances allow.
Tuba, I think people are just sharing their experiences because it feels helpful for them to do so. I am not getting the sense from any recent posts in this thread that anyone is harshing on you for not taking action. They are just bug reports. We know you are working on it. It is OK.
GOD DAMN IT! I made a post, and misspelled a word. Edit? Have to log in first. Log in. Edit. Save. “You do not have the right to make changes.” Repeat four times.
Please, please, please, please, fix the problems? Beg & plead and promise to be good!
I don’t think it’s going to make it till 1:00 AM.
She’s breaking up!
She’s breaking up!
I’m certain it’s the “Martin/Zimmerman” thread surpassing the 10k post mark that’s doing it. (Well, not really, but excising that clusterfuck couldn’t hurt, now could it?!)
…except for this one.
