87 or 88 minutes?
It’s been once for each tonight. In the past, it always seems to have been one or the other also.
Seconds though, right?
Ah yes, seconds.
Sometimes, time stands still, ya know.
Enter search term. Press button. Nothing happens. Press again, get message “The board requires you to wait 120 seconds between searches”.
- Why must wait?
- Why not work in first place?
(I’m sure this has been pointed out before; I don’t care, this is the first time for me.)
This was indeed pointed out before, but you would have to search to find it.
SDMB searches are restricted to one per user per 2 minutes.
The first time you pressed, it registered that you had initiated a search, but you didn’t wait long enough for the reply.
The second time you pressed, it detected you had already used your search allowance, and had to wait for the 2 minutes to lapse.
The 2 minute delay was instituted years ago when it was thought that repetitive searches were a major cause of board problems and delays. Probably not true, but admin would rather be safe than sorry.
You might prefer to use the Google search anyway. It doesn’t have the delays and covers more ground.
Had a hard time logging in tonight. When I finally got in, I saw all the Unread threads were marked as Read.
Sam, would you please give me all your information – how you access the Dope, device and browser and platform, how you connect to us.
Let’s see if we can chase this down.
(And things were going so well, or so I thought. Drat.)
I’m accessing differently tonight. Our PC died, and I’m using the wife’s notebook. It has IE8.
The Board seems to be running fine now that I’m in though.
Sorry to hear about your loss.
Is it possible that your difficulties were tied to the death throes of your PC? When equipment is getting ready to sh–to fail on you, often nothing goes right.
I’m not a tech person, obviously, but I don’t think so. I logged off of the Board this morning okay, and the PC was still working when I shut it down. It just wouldn’t boot up tonight, giving me dire messages instead.
Several times I’ve click on New Posts and a message indicated the threads shown haven’t been modified but were unread. That wasn’t the case, they were the new posts. This has happened intermittently for at least a year.
No problems for me in many weeks. Keep up the good work, O Doper poobahs!
I can’t find anything on this problem anywhere … how can we be the only people with this problem?
And it only happens to some folks … and is not reproducible. It’s the hardest kind of bug to chase down.
I can’t find anything in common with those people that have this problem neither.
I’m clueless. (And not for the first time today, neither.)
Sorry this is happening to you … to anyone. I’m open to suggestions from the more educated/resident tech heads here.
It’s not really causing a problem for me, it’s just an anomaly.
We made it to reddit’s front page. Any performance issues are probably long past by now - check out the page number - but it’d be interesting know if anything came of it.
Uh, work is slow right now. I had some time to go back that far. Yup. :o
No huge uptick or anything. Dang.
And it happened again. Logged on and everything is marked as Read.
Still no idea why this happens. Or why this happens to you. Can’t seem to find anything on the subject.
Please send me an email off the board. Tell me everything about how you connect – machine(s) used, OS version/number. browser version/number, ISP.
This is not a reproducible error, which makes it very difficult to troubleshoot. I’m sorry for your trouble here.
And just had a 503 Service Error where the Board was not available for a few minutes.
Will send you e-mail.
