Eons ago when they were first married, my in-laws got their electricity from a co-op somewhere in Indiana. I don’t know all the details, but apparently, you’re a member for life and when you die, your estate can claim some shares back. MIL has been reminding us of this forever - I remember her talking about it just after FCD and I married 39 years ago! She was absolutely obsessed that we not forget about this cash bonanza.
I suspect the co-op counts on people not remembering so they get to keep the money, but I digress…
Since the original account was in FIL’s name, MIL did whatever paperwork was required to claim the funds. A grand total of (wait for it) $69!!!
