Cake Day - A Sweet Treat in the MMP

One has to be careful at Costco….that’s where the tin of pecan melt away wedding cookies and the huge box of Walkers shortbreads leapt into my cart.

The pecan wedding cookies are 3/4th gone and I can only blame my roommate for 2 cookies……

My self control will be even more treacherous with the shortbreads…must not open. I should gift wrap them in holiday paper as a further deterrent. But then my birthday IS early in January and I might need to give myself a present…

My iPhone screen is kaput-I made a repair appt to get it replaced tomorrow at 6pm. I like the repair place and they’ve put a screen on this one before, like 2 weeks after I got it. One screen every 4 years isn’t bad. My phones get hard use. I dropped this one facedown on a black top parking lot last week and it grew a new crack, which turned into screen failure tonight just dropping it from the arm of the loveseat. I was kinda expecting it and thus ends the suspense. After the new screen is on it I will order a hard core case from Otterbox for it. It was in a UAG case but not as clunky and protective as an Otterbox. I shouldn’t have gone for svelte looks with this last case.

It’s always something. Now I must gird my loins and persevere in not consoling myself with cookies.

Those things, I can avoid. It’s harder to avoid the Bulleit rye or the Kirkland London Gin; but I usually do. Stick to the bog rolls, the pesto salmon, and the esomeprazole, and all is good…

Well, until the traumatic brain injury and subsequent doctor’s orders about alcohol, from my kid the doctor, I would have had trouble with those as well (subbing in dark rum for the rye). Now. I allow myself a glass of champagne on New Years Eve if I’m sitting down on a couch in someone’s living and don’t have to drive for hours and hours.

Fortunately my grandchildren’s parents’ wedding anniversary is New Years Eve and Grandma is always invited to babysit NYE so said adults can celebrate so I am sleeping over at their house anyway and already where I’m gonna be for the night. A flight of stairs up to the guest room is all I have to navigate after my hedonistic fling with the bubbly.

Man, I really really really used to enjoy my gin and tonics and my rum and diet cokes but I just have to not think about those. I still buy myself deluxe Fever~tree tonic water and enjoy it sans gin or rum. It’s a whole lot better than nothing. In fact I just put one in the freezer to chill and it should be good and cold about now. I expect it will go good with a few cookies.

I think my favourite cake is devil’s food cake. I loved orange cake, but you can’t find mixes for it anymore.

(Yes, I make cakes from mixes. Now you know my terrible secret.)

I’m having a ginnintonic now.

Was it this?

If so, I am going to share your guilty secret to all and sundry! Or at least in the Secret Santa thread.

Am I the only one who remembers Harvey Wallbanger cakes? Orange cake mix, Galliano, and other stuff? So good.

THANK YOU!

My mother used to love those and I want this Thanksgiving to be really special because I think it will be the last one we have together. I will start getting the ingredients together tomorrow.

THANK YOU!!!

I also enjoy a good gin&tonic

EEK!
Carmen Kia and I are wincing in sympathy.

I’ll have to make you one(I was making martinis before I could time my shoes)

Howdy all. I am alive. Had another hurricane a few days ago. The eye went right over me again. This one was less severe than Ian and I only had 4-5 inches of rain and the yard mess was less too.

Cake? I love cake. Carrot cake is my favorite but I like them all. I’m not a huge cheesecake fan nor a big pie fan. I was discussing the Thanksgiving menu with my son’s GF as I bought a turkey today. She is making pies; cherry for me and apple crumb for herself and Sonny boy. We’ll have dressing, creamed corn, collard greens and of course turkey and gravy. I told them we shouldn’t cook so much as they always tend to overdo and we wind up wasting food. It’s too expensive to waste food.

I went back and read the last few Mmp’s to see what y’all been up to. Not much happening in my world. We are supposed to get down to 50F :scream:. I have not been in those cold temps in forever. I shall have to find Buddy’s sweater. Poor little guy doesn’t have a lot of hair. His hair is very short and he’s almost hairless underneath. I ordered a cloth measuring tape so I can accurately measure him for a dog coat. It should be here tomorrow and hopefully I can get an overnight delivery from the jungle. I made a vet appt for him for next Tuesday to get a toe nail trim and a heart worm test so I can buy him some preventative medicine. I sent his records from his previous vet but it doesn’t look to me that he needs any shots as he was given 3 yr shots the last time.

Mooommm I saw the pics of the kids haircuts. They are so cute but I liked the man bun. He looks older with it cut.

Y’all take care and stay safe.

I think orange cake mixes used to be more popular. I don’t think it was Duncan Hines–I tried that one, not as a Wallbanger cake, though–and didn’t like it. This one seems closer to the real deal somehow.

Your mom deserves the best. After all, she gave us you!

This is so fun, that’s the first recipe I found when I asked google. It’s not the one Mom used to make, that one involved poking holes into the cake before pouring booze and then glaze over it.

Mom always deserves the best because she didn’t kill me when I was a teenager.

Parkinson’s for sure, and most likely dementia, tho MIL doesn’t want to get a diagnosis. Apparently, if you don’t know then the problem doesn’t exist… or something. We’re thinking she has her own memory issues.

We can’t help but wonder if the move and all made things worse. But, yeah, a 21 mile drive is lots better than 800 miles. I suspect he does 800 miles a week for them anyway.

That’s one problem I don’t have - the nearest one is about 25 miles away and generally I only go that way when I’m heading to my mom’s. We do have a BJ’s Warehouse but way back when we had a membership, I noticed that sales at local stores were the same as BJ’s prices, so I let my membership lapse. No regrets.

As do I. I don’t see the big shame - someone else pre-measured all the ingredients so I don’t have to dirty up a lot of cups and spoons. Plus if someone thinks box mixes are so beneath them, they don’t have to have any of the cake I make. So there! :stuck_out_tongue:

You don’t do leftovers? We’re having 2 turkeys for that very reason - we’ll share the leftovers among all 3 family units. I’ll keep the sides to more reasonable portions, but we’ll likely still have enough for another meal.

Today he is older - he’s one-year-old today! Slightly blurry pic from 3 days ago…

OK, FIL update, such as it is. I woke around midnight-thirty to pee and was about to text FCD when I heard the TV. He said he’d been home about half an hour. While they were waiting and waiting in the ER, there were 2 major auto accidents in the county, so suddenly the ER priorities changed. FIL had had an xray of the back and hip (he’d fallen and also hit his head) and there was talk of a CT scan, but, yanno, waiting. FIL was getting antsy and he hadn’t had his meds, so they decided to just leave.

FCD took them home and got them to bed. I expect he’ll head over there when he gets up. I think they need to get him to a neurologist right away. I’m going to find some numbers for local resources for the aging. It’s about all I can do, especially since I’ve got Tobias for the next 3 days.

So for the moment, nothing has changed. I’s tahred because of a broken night, and when I was washing my face this morning, I managed to jam my pinkie up my nose and start it to bleeding. Not the way I want to start my day.

Happy Tuesday, I guess.

sounds like a boozy jello cake …

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 52 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 71 and rain. It already has rained some and more is expected to start soonish and last all day. Fine by me cause we shall be inside and dry all day. Today is laundry day, be still my beatin’ heart. Matter of fact I have already started a load of undies and towels bein’ as they are all white. The usual sloth and overall uselessness shall comprise most of the day. Sup shall be leftover red beans 'n rice from yestiddy. IMO it shall be even better today as red beans 'n rice is one of those things that is better after it has a chance to sit and blend all the flavors. One other big excitatement I forgot to mention is my new slippers arrived yestiddy afternoon! I ordered them from :astonished:Wally*World :astonished: on Sattidy.

WetOne great news about your BIL! Hope he continues to improve.

MOOOOOOM Happy Birthday to the Tobester! He’s gettin’ to be such a big boy! Here’s hopin’ FCD FIL seen about today.

I use cake mixes as well. No shame in that at all. The only time I don’t use a mix is for pound cake. Pound cake is relatively easy to mix up and the recipe we use is for a sour cream pound cake that starts out in a cold oven. ‘Tis very good and startin’ in a cold oven gives nice crunchy bits on top.

Everyone else, retention is minimal right now, so yays, boos, hugs, trouts, noogies, chitlins, and how you doin’s all around as needed.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Tuesday Y’all!

Afternoon, mumpers! It’s 10c/50f with a predicted high of 12c/53f and cloudy. It’s actually brightened up a bit since it’s been heaving down most of the day. Weather app says “It could be warmer outside, but you could also have more slugs in your shower. Count your fucking blessings”. I agree, I am all for no slugs in my shower.

I also have no judgement on folks who use cake mixes, I’ve used some very good ones myself. Some cakes I have to make from scratch because nobody else makes a mix for them so I would be a bit stuffed there.

Moooom so sorry to hear about the doings with FIL, I am sure it must be a massive worry for both of you but also a help that they’re a lot closer than before. The move from FL might have affected them both, but it really sounds like there was little help for it. You and FCD couldn’t keep taking on that amount of driving, and there was no reliable support in FL for them either. It might have been the best of a bad situation, but I still think you did the right thing getting them moved closer to you.

I managed to get a couple of written prescriptions from the vet for Ophelia’s medication so that’s now on order from a place where we get their flea and worming stuff from. I think I have saved myself about £80 by ordering direct as the vet seems to put a hefty fee on medications. I phoned them yesterday to ask for a prescription and I was quite sure the girl I spoke to had not understood what I’d asked for. I was right, she had ordered meds instead of giving me a prescription for them but fortunately they’re reasonably common so I’m sure there will be someone else who needs them. Mine are coming in the post, so fingers crossed for no postal strikes!

Busy irk day for me, I’ve already had three meetings and I have another three in the diary before I leave here at 4pm. I am obviously not destined to get any actual work done while I’m here…

I think you did too~and that’s my professional, grizzled old home health nurse opinion as well as friend over the coffee mug opinion.

Using the term loosely, it’s snowing. The streets and sidewalks are wet. There is white stuff on the trees. My plans today are getting the car’s vehicle emissions test done, go to the p. off, drop off Ariel’s medium blanket and heated bucket.

FINALLY got Tobias down to nap - he was asleep, just finishing his bottle, then Higgs decided to go bat crap crazy with the barking. I’m gonna fillet that dog one of these days!! Anyway, he’s sleeping now and I was able to snarf down a quick lunch.

FCD is going to the local Veteran’s Home to see if there’s anything they can offer his dad. Then he’s headed to the apartment.

Daughter’s school is doing a fund-raising craft show on Dec 3. I’m going to get some cotton yarn and some bright acrylic yarns and make some stuff to sell - like finger puppets and coozies and maybe a few hats. FCD and I will man the table with donated stuff to sell. I wish she’d come up with this idea sooner so I’d have had time to make more things, but I’ll do what I can with the time I have.

In fact, we’ll leave early to get Roxy and I’ll swing by WalMart for the yarn so I can start tonight.

Good grief! I’m glad you’re riding these out fairly well. Do you have storm shutters or does Sonny Boy help you prep the house?

Happy Birthday Tobstar!

I have fit 2 cats and a worried little brown dog on my chair with me, and my laptop. The little brown dog is worried about the cats. They are bigger than he is and VERY SCARY. One of the cats would probably like to cuddle up with him for a nap, but the other would absolutely try to filet him if she noticed him. Mostly she pretends she doesn’t notice he’s there. The queen doesn’t have to acknowledge the peasants, doncha know.

The school bus finally figured out Beamer’s new address and he is off at school. Yay!

Happy Tuesday everyone!
