It was the name of Homestar Runner’s girlfriend in that old school Flash web cartoon series, most famous for the character Strongbad.
I always thought she looked like an evil wizard cast a spell on a princess and turned her into a mop.
Goddammit, I was trying to ignore these. I suppose they could have some sort of Mexican hot chocolate charm, but without having tried them, the flavor combination doesn’t much appeal to me. But I’ve been happily surprised before – and now I’m bound to try 'em.
I’m already fighting a serious Oreo mint thin addiction! Selena Gomez, have you no pity??
If you think that cinnamon and sugar are a good flavor combination, these are right there with that!
No idea who or what Selena Gomez is, but I like the cookies.
These are my favourite marzipan, especially the cherry-in-rum and apricot-in-brandy versions.
Selena Gomez is a former child star now Popstar.
Her cookie is a Horchata flavored oreo. In limited edition packaging.
No idea of the taste.
I like cinnamon toast and cinnamon rolls as much as the next person, but the chocolate cookies on top of that? It seems a bit much, is all. I guess I’ll just have to find out for myself.
I don’t like Oreos in general (well, I do like the cookie bit–if only I could just buy the cookie part, I’d be happy), but my daughter got some of the Selena Gomez ones, and I’m smitten. I was not expecting them to be good, but they’re great. Never occurred to me they’re supposed to be “horchata” flavored (I mean, I knew it was cinnamon), but now it makes sense as I guess a nod to the Mexican part of her ancestry?
Marzipan I also generally dislike, but when paired with dark chocolate, it actually works quite well, because the dark chocolate provides a foil for the sickly sweetness of marzipan. Or I should say that I like the idea of marzipan, but it’s always disappointing to me except in that form.
My g_d, you stolen my soul! Wherever do you get them?
I like most good marzipan. Ritter Sport is a little sweet for me. I prefer Niederegger, which you can get as a seasonal treat at World Market.
I’ve visited their shop and looked at their museum windows in Lübeck. Well worth the bus ride from Rostock/Warnemunde.
Figures from various periods of history sculpted out of marzipan
I may not be able to get Anthony Berg marzipan on the windswept prairies of Nebraska but thanks to your lead about World market the next time I go to Omaha for my medical procedure, after which I reward myself with a bagel brunch (kosher) with @LH75 and his winsome bride, I think I’ll hit up World Market first and take a sampling of Ritter Sport and Niederegger marzipan & chocolates for us to graze through after our fresh, warm bagels. Dark chocolate versions of course, I’m not a heathen!
Seems like a good reward for taking care of medical business!
At Christmas time I go buy Niederegger and pig out.
Also I am a huge Dominosteine fan. Dominostein - Wikipedia
I looked at the store near my parents, and that store is sold out. How long are they supposed to be sold, because those sound yummy. If I see them when I’m there, I’ll might buy one package to stick in my suitcase.
At the Lindt store near me they have a chocolatier on site, making chocolaty goodnes. They have a three pack of dark chocolate covered marzipan-filled dates.
I can eat half of one of the chocolate-covered marzipan-filled dates.
And RitterSport is dangerous. They keep coming out with new flavors. If I see one of their licorice with milk chocolate, I might have to buy it.
If I buy one, I usually keep it in the fridge or freezer and break off pieces.
I can actually get these easier than RitterSport, oddly. And I just looked at the website for a store in Zurich, and now I want one of these. Dark chocolate, marzipan and orange? Where’s the swooning emoji?
When we went to Toledo I found out they also have their own version of marzipan, which is different than the one typically enrobed in chocolate.
Oh yeah, that’s really good, too. We get that sometimes.
I think they’re (my?) new stuff is hit and miss, actually. From the beginning of time until a few years ago, they only had maybe ten flavors, right? Whole hazelnuts, milk (Alpenmilch), marzipan, dark, various other reasonable chocolate bars. But now, they have have Christmas wafer (tastes like lebkuchen, sort of like a spiced honey cookie with a communion wafer on the bottom), peppermint, other weird stuff.
Their 50% dark is the best out there for straight up dark chocolate, IMO. Never used to be a fan of dark, but it changed my mind.
If you’re a fan of high end chocolate best eaten in small quantities, try these folks:
A certain Doper who’ll have to out herself if she wants turned me on to these folks. Thank you dear!
I agree with this sentiment. I like almonds well enough, but I’ve never really liked marzipan, especially on it’s own. It makes really cute little sculpted fruits and stuff, that i always want to like, and then find disappointing.
I like many of flavors of Ritter Sport, though, and i was surprised to learn that many dopers didn’t get the reference.
I enjoy window-shopping at European confectioners who mold marzipan because they make not just colorful shapes, but even add realistic blemishes and individuality to the pieces.
I love marizpan art, too. So cool to see what artists can do with it.
I suppose it’s an easy medium for sculpting or painting, but still remarkable to me what they do. Thank you for sharing your pic of marzipan sculpture above!
I study the bananas with their brown bruises or areas on pears with pitting. It’s clever and fun.
The commissary carries a few of them (apricot, plum, and occasionally one or two others) during the Xmas season every year. They can be ordered on-line from Amazon and others, but I would wait until November and decent weather) to try that.
