College Football Bowl Season, Bowl Pool?

You might not want to watch it. (On the other hand, they could come out better in the 2nd half. The game is not out of reach.)

But Iowa is outplaying the Ramblin Jackets. This is a game of line control. Battle of the trenches.

I’m back, and disappointed. We went to a bar where I most of the first half. yechh.

Gonzo, officially we are the Yellow Jackets, who has a Ramblin Wreck for as mascot, as well as the award winning Buzz the Fuzzy Bee.

Some Southern Schools have multiple nicknames. It is the Auburn Tigers but they like to shout WAR EAGLE!!

Is the missing word here “saw” or “missed”?

I’m thinking that Auburn is the only school with 2 mascots. They not only shout “War Eagle”, but they have an eagle as their mascot (along with the tiger). I always thought that the fact that 'Bama doesn’t really have an animal mascot * kinda balanced things out.

  • They have an elephant as a symbol, and a mascot that runs around the stands during games, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone ever say “go elephants!” or “The Alabama Elephants”.

“saw”…damn laptop likes to stop typing sometimes.

Ok, it looks like the offense is starting to roll. Hope it is not too late. I love watching the option when it is firing on all cylinders.

IMO, the long layoff hurts the option more than other offenses. Don’t really have a reason besides timing and my big gut. GT’s offense really struggled last year in the bowl game against LSU.

My theory upon watching the first half is that a relatively unconventional offense like the triple-option works much better when your opponent only has a week to prepare than when they have a month to prepare.

Aside from that interception, it looks like GaTech’s offense and defense have both shown up in the 2nd half, so we have a game here.

Strange the reason given for the Big 10 dismal record in bowls is usually their extra long layoff. When they win, it becomes an advantage. The fact is Iowa whipped them physically. I picked GT but hoped for Iowa. I don’t think many dopers had much luck the last 2 days.

Penalties, interceptions, catching a ball on the three, Tech just looked frustrated tonight. Other than the touchdown drive, we looked rough out there. I guess they’ll just take the 17 million and go back home to a cold Atlanta.

I suppose Iowa will go to a nice warm home? It was 4 degrees there today.

And that was the high for the day. New storm comming in. Hope the 600 or so from the university (team, athletic staff, band, school administrators) and the 25000 fans make it home OK and on time.

The last time the University of Iowa won one of these things it was the State University of Iowa and Alix Karis (better known as Mongo) was on the field. This is a big deal on the frozen prairie.

Karras was an underrated and under appreciated player. He was terrific player for the Lions but he got into gambling trouble and was suspended for one year.

A very big deal. For te last month all we heard was GT is so powerful, 300+ yards a game, triple option this, triple option that, blah blah blah. What a great game!

Define “one of these things”. Iowa has had quite a few Bowl wins in he last 3 decades and might be the 4th most successful Big Ten team in my lifetime and that’s only if I give Penn State full credit for only being there part of the time. I suppose if you say “major Bowl” as defined as one of the Bowls currently in the BCS then that observation is true.

Good show by Big Ten this year. 2-0 in BCS. 4-3 overall, with Northwestern losing because of a late injury to a placekicker, a shorthanded Michigan State team losing to Texas Tech in Texas, and Minnesota losing in a close one to Iowa State. As much as I hate to say it, go Horns, beat Bama.

The last time Iowa won a “major” bowl was the 1959 Rose Bowl, when they beat Joe Kapp’s California Golden Bears.

The last time Temple was in any bowl was the 1979 Garden State Bowl, when they beat the California Golden Bears, led by not-even-I-remember.

I’m so glad Cal can help out with announcer trivia this year.

Is it just me, or is this bowl season the all-time crappy weather bowl season?

Which is ironic, because I believe bowls were originally specifically chosen to bring winter visitors to warm-weather locales. It just happens that this year a new Ice Age has descended on the South.

I’m picking Troy in the GMAC. Three reasons:

  1. My gut reaction, which was Central Michigan, has not served me well this bowl season.
  2. It appears to be all about defense. Troy’s got speed on pass rushes. I think LeFevour has a bad night.
  3. I’m going all out for Alabama state homerism. :stuck_out_tongue:

Troy is in Alabama? Who knew?

I’m conflicted about the BCS NCG.

On the one hand, the tyranny of the SEC has gone on long enough. The southerner’s boot has been on the throat of the CFB proletariat for 4 years, and their arrogance knows no bounds.

On the other hand…is it Texas that should raise the banner of freedom? Ick. As a Cal fan, I’m contractually obligated to hate Mack Brown and Texas. The Texas band has silly uniforms and they play “I’ve Been Workin’ On the Railroad”. (I know what it’s really called. Don’t bother me…I’m on a roll.)

On the other, my brother-in-law is a huge 'Bama fan, and I don’t particularly like my BIL.

Hook 'em horns. Not that it matters…I think Bama wins handily, and oppression continues.

All the above with tongue in cheek.
