Comments on Technical Issues

This thread is for you to post your comments, suggestions, revisions, corrections, etc to the new thread FAQ: Technical Issues for Posting

There is nothing new in the new thread; it merely collects and updates material that was found in several different locations. This is a long-promised clean-up of the various FAQ for posting on the SDMB.

Great job on cleaning up the FAQ’s.

Thank you for the effort you put into them. I know last year when I slogging through them it was difficult to interpret some of them.

What he said.

Excellent work. Thank you. It makes a world of difference.

I suggest that in post #3 you add that Charter Members MUST pay on time to keep Charter status.

In post # 7 you’ve mixed instructions from OS 9.x and OS X. very few Max users still use OS 9.x. So if I may;

Key caps are no longer available on OS X, instead, go to the Edit menu to Special Characters. Choose the catagory (Punctuation, Currency Symbols, Math, etc) find the needed character, then click “insert.” Be sure to preview your post, as some Mac characters don’t work. They come up as ??.

In the same post, in the line for spoiler tags, add that colors show through the spoiler.

To add to what picunurse just said about post #7: smileys also show through spoilers (not as critical as colored text, but you never know…).

GT

OK, got that added in, too. Thanks!

From the post on “vB Coding and tips”:

The name codes don’t work in the current version of vB. Arnold’s page does say this, but I think it’d be better to include the disclaimer here or not mention them at all.

The name codes do not work because html is turned off, so it’s number codes or vb coding only.

A small stylistic suggestion, but in post 4, how about turning that sentence all in capitals to bold instead?

A comment on using only capital letters:
I use a text reader right now so I can do other things while I listen. At one point I couldn’t read pages in anything under 2 inch print. Some of the people on this board are blind. Now to the point. Many of the text reader’s don’t handle all capital words as words. You get rapidly read letters instead. Some times I filter through cut and paste to change cases. I think that bold instead of all capital letters in the board rules would be a reasonable policy. The persons using this software because they have too, wouldn’t run into problems with the rules being read to them.

Dex, I recently made some suggestions that were pretty similar towhat you have just done. Let me repeat one that I still think is valid. We no longer need a sticky to tell us ** the SDMB is switching to paid subscriptions**. It happened years ago. Everyone still here knows that. You can un-sticky it, and let it fade away.

Yes, Peter, and I told you then we were working on it… and it’s finally come to fruition. We’ve actually been toying with it for almost a year, it’s just not been hot priority. The changes are pretty much as you suggested, but we fel the glossary needed a separate stickie, since it’s something that gets asked about a lot.

The last step is to fix and combine the threads on subscriptions, which we hope to have finished in the next few days (since that involves editing Ed Zotti’s statements.)

The plan is to allow comment and revision and suggestions for a few weeks, and then to set up an Announcement that they’re finalized.
