Constantine Season One - open spoilers as it airs

Holy crap, he was smoking in the opening of this episode. The producers finally got them to show him smoking. Good for them.

Yes, “good for them” the check from RJ Reynolds must have cleared.

What’s the problem? The character smokes. It’s part of who he is. Why does everything have to be sanitized for the kiddies? This show is on at 10:00 on a Friday night. In addition to smoking and swearing, it has a level of gore that makes me queasy, and as I mentioned upthread, I’ve watched the entire run of House and CSI without a lot of flinching.

This isn’t a kiddie show. They shouldn’t have to treat it like one.

In other news. I read today that their episode order has been capped at 13, but it hasn’t been cancelled–it started late in the season, so the network wants to see how it does before they decide whether to renew.

Dude, his smoking is a pretty big part of his character. They really discussed this with the network and it looks like they are getting some freedom to make him like the comic.

In other news, they have been told it is only going to be a 13 episode season. However, unlike other shows, they have not been directly canceled. Since they are in the dead-end Friday slot, they may get a 13 episode second season. Or they may yet be canceled if other pilots show more promise.

Not terrible news. I’d give them a solid 65% chance at a second 13-episode season.

Didn’t someone mention he’s bisexual? Why is smoking more important to his character than his bisexuality?

Yes, but* why* does he smoke? Because Big Tobacco pays for it.

From what I understand the bisexuality came into play only later in the comic series. And, interestingly, people have noticed that he’s a bit cagey when it comes to responding about sex - saying things like “the people I’ve slept with” rather than “the women I’ve slept with” and stuff like that.

Anyways, the Friday episode went UP in the ratings, which is a good sign. So maybe we can get a full season - or maybe a Sleepy Hollow like 13ep season that is guaranteed a Season 2.

Anyways, I really enjoyed Friday’s episode. The interesting interplay between John and Midnight was pretty fun. Though, the opening scene (and that alleyway) was obviously Atlanta, not New Orleans (I’ve walked by the Sidebar more than a few times while going to lunch in downtown Atlanta).

In the comics? I doubt it.

Well, does he use cigarettes to solve magical mysteries, or is it just his style, like his trenchcoat?

I’m not entirely sure why it is necessary to be dismissive of a character’s distinctive style? Especially when adapting the character from one medium to another.

I think comic-book John actually suffered from fatal lung disease and managed to con Hell into leaving him alive anyway? Yeah, addiction is part of his story.

Lung cancer, yeah. His trick was actually very clever… since I wouldn’t be surprised if they brought it into the show, I’ll stick it in a spoiler.

He sold his soul to three different devils, and they refused to let him die until they’d worked out which of the three would get him.

It actually came up in his current comic series when the Spectre showed up to kill him - he pointed out his current situation, asked Spectre if he wanted to cause the chaos that would inevtably ensue and Spectre relented.

Friday’s episode was really good and looking at the production code, it was the second episode made even though it aired 6th. You could really tell, too. No Zed and it ended with narration that sounded like a new pilot. Heck, it almost should have been the pilot.

I liked it myself. I think Chaz deserves more screentime.

It was weird having the halloween episode play at thanksgiving though  The horror elements got to me, actually, but I’m a wuss in that regard.

It’s a shame this show ended production, because this episode was just absolutely fantastic. I loved every second and the twist… wow! Setting up some fun stuff with Zed’s backstory, angels, etc. One of the best hours of TV I’ve watched this fall!

More Chaz would be nice, but I guess they can’t afford Zed & Chaz in the same episode. The show might have potential if it had a guarenteed season or two to develop, but it’s not going to get that.

I think it is quite likely that since they just aired the (previously made) episode that did not have Zed at all, they decided to write a “Zed heavy” episode to emphasize her importance on the show.

Both were good episodes, too.

Have not caught first run, but over the last 2 weekends I’ve caught up on all of the episodes via Comcast. Am liking it so far, but damn, it’s dark. When I saw it was on NBC I was surprised.

Kinda lost my suspension of disbelief on the mother of the one kid though. This strange guy bursts in during the middle of a problem with your son and tells you the kid is possessed. Then you see something odd in a mirror when something strange happens. Next thing you’re drugging your kid and wandering off alone to some isolated shack for a “seance” with this guy and another total stranger? WTF?

Wow - I thought the latest episode (with the angel feather) was the best by far.
I like how the preacher had good intentions - made it more complex.
And the twist that the angel was fallen - wow.

Wonder what the consequences for Manny will be.

Brian

I think it was a culmination of things, and Constantine walking in just planted the seed in her mind. She had already figured out something was wrong with her son - the last thing she saw just put her over the edge.

Agreed on all points. It will be interesting to see if the rules relax for the angels since they seem to be relaxing for the devils.
