Custom Licence Plates — Seen in the Wild

Seen as I was walking over to a local restaurant for a late brunch: a bright red C7 Corvette convertible, with AWSM TOY.

Saw a few.

A white SUV with NIKKI⎵R. A black SUV with GAYLE⎵K. I wonder if they know each other?

A Bentley convertible being driven by a retirement-aged guy with BUNS⎵⎵1. Maybe he made his fortune in bakeries? The woman riding with him was more Mrs. Howell than a Ginger trophy wife, but “Buns” might be her nickname.

An EV with a 5-letter plate that read LOIUB. Maybe he’s Louie B and the more straightforward “LOUIB” was already taken?

I dunno, maybe “Just Because”.

The only thing I’m quickly finding for “Ghost BC” is that it’s apparently the name the band Ghost* uses while touring in the US (legal reasons).

I’ll just leave this one in the ‘if you know, you know’/‘when you see it’ category.

*Ghost

On the back of a Tahoe, PENTIUM

One the one hand it’s not not surprising since there’s an Intel fab here. On the other hand Pentiums are kind of retro although produced until 2023 and the plate was not badly faded which happens a lot here.

I mean, in the end, that’s really what it’s all about, isn’t it?

Yes, indeed the Pentiums is what is all about, I haven’t had to wax my modem in years in order to make it go fast.

But if you are talking about animals PLN8RS, on a plate reading protect pollinators, and MUMYBR on a plate displaying a bear should be besties! And clearly L␣JEFE1 is not the big boss at the DMV or he would have been able to get a proper Jefe plate. The same is true about the 1R1SH1 who I do not hope to see driving during Saint Patrick’s day.

Saw IWUIWU on an Indiana Wesleyan University plate. Either someone is doubly proud of their alma mater or IWU was already taken.

Or both people in a couple went to IWU.

On a 5 character style plate I saw IIEOI.

Color me baffled. The car & license plate frame were both generic something boring.

Or someone was being cutesy and intended the first IWU as short for “I wuv you”.

Along those lines, many years ago I worked with a young woman whose plates said IYQ.

Weawwy, weawwy pwecious.

LSLGuy and Sternvogel, both are possibilities

Another headscratcher this morning IVANK LU Standard plate, nondescript blue minivan.

That’s from a song:

You didn’t have to love me like you did,
But you did, but you did.
And I vank lu.

No? Maybe Ivan K. went to Liberty University.

Wisconsin plate, seen as I was driving through the Milwaukee area this evening:

TA MERE

…which is French for “your mother,” though it would also translate, more casually, as “yo momma.”

Saw an example of the EV from Porsche. Nice car:

Standard FL plate read XSS⎵NRG.

I bet it has / does.

Seen yesterday: A sporty BMW (making farty noises as it sped around other cars) with the license plate SLZZPY. I hope he’s not catching those Zs while on the highway.

I saw a BWM I4 EV with the license plate -NOPEC

I followed a horse trailer with the plate GDDYUP

I was confuse by a plate I saw on a Dodge Charger, HOT2MOM. I first thought it was HOT MOM but there is definately a ‘2’ in there.

Just saw a dark gray Tesla Model 3 with a standard background FL plate with IGGIPOP. As with many (most?) cars in FL, the windows are blackout tinted so no way to see anything about the driver. The celebrity reference is obvious. But how does that connect to this car / driver?

A ref from Wiki says that not quite 30 years ago he bought a villa in greater Miami. Which villa was his primary residence at least for a few years thereafter. But the general area mentioned is about 2 hours from here.

The area where I saw this car is not incompatible with somebody of his wealth. Plenty of fatcat mansions and mongo condos around. He’s now 78, so may have downsized his lifestyle a bit; a villa with big grounds and a menagerie sounds like work even if all you do is pay for it and walk around in it. A swanky condo is sooo much easier.

A Model 3? Not so compatible.

'Tis a mystery.

I’d be a little surprised if Iggy Pop actually had his name on his own license plate, but who knows? My guess would be it’s owned by someone who goes by “Iggy” (maybe their given name is Ignatius or Ignatz) and is, of course, a reference to the more famous Iggy.
