CW TV Superhero 4-way Crossover 2016 (Spoilers after airing)

For all that this episode was part of the crossover, it also felt quintessentially Arrow. And not the shitty Season 4 Arrow, either. I get the feeling the writers were trolling the rabid Olicity shippers, that Oliver’s heart’s desire was to get married to Laurel as well as Ray and Felicity being an item.

Come to think of it, yesterday’s Flash episode also felt like a Flash episode, what with the Wally/HR drama and a disheartened Barry being given a pep talk (by Oliver, this time). This gives me hope that tomorrow’s Legends episode is going to pull out all the stops and give us that trademark Legends comic-book wackiness and utter disregard for consistency and logic.

The Flash’s theme played when he made an appearance. The Legends theme played when the Waverider appeared. We even got a little of the Nanda Parbat theme when Sara joked about assassinating Oliver if he didn’t push through with the wedding. (And a hell of a lot more of that theme when Sara fought Oliver previously in The Flash.) Composer Blake Neely did an exemplary job of weaving the various themes together. I think the Supergirl theme stands out more as it sounds so foreign to the rest of the music, as befits Kara being from a completely different universe.

I’ve watched every episode of Supergirl and was a fan of some DC comics in the 1960s (Superman, Batman, Legion, Justice League) but never read Flash or Green Arrow or Green Lantern. So Monday we watched Supergirl and they had the crossover tease at the end and we thought we’d give the Flash a shot. We found it impossible to follow, didn’t know the characters at all. If you already watch all of these series, yes it’s probably cool. If you’re a fan of only one, not so much.

Supergirl already did that one…

Dr. Who has done a show like this. I wouldn’t doubt if the Simpsons did it.

They did a JLA issue where this is so tropetastic that the villain built his plan around the heroes inevitably realizing they’re in some kind of weird shared dream.

Batman, about to wake up, realizes it too late; Green Arrow saves the day anyway.

Star Trek did it. The Last Temptation of Christ did it. The Lord of the Rings did it.

Incidentally, the Superman plant was called the Black Mercy. Black Lotus is from D&D. Or perhaps MtG.

Right there with you on this, except I used to read Flash and Green Arrow and the rest. But Flash got two episodes before I stopped watching. Legends got one. Arrow has never interested me. So if they keep these crossovers to a minimum so they don’t fuck up Supergirl I will greatly appreciate it.

I liked the Arrow episode well enough I guess. They always have flashbacks so seeing Oliver in a different time and place was natural.

I was kind of hoping for more rock 'em sock 'em superhero action. They’re saving that for the end I hope.

Presumably he didn’t think they were ready to go up against aliens.

In the comics, Superman was vulnerable to magic, so I’m guessing Supergirl is, too. Ragman’s powers seem magical/mystical. So are Vixen’s. Would’ve been funny if one or both of them had fought her and won. (And would’ve given her some important intel about herself.)

Cisco’s powers apparently aren’t mystical, but I’m guessing he could solve a problem like Kara by zapping her straight into another universe.

That episode was terrible…but it was Arrow, so I guess that’s to be expected.

I actually preferred the bits in the joined fantasy, despite the Arrow-centricity of it, to the pre-escape sections that were actually moving the plot along. Jesus, Wild Dog is an annoying little prick…

Though once the normies escaped, it wasn’t without its charms…my favourite bit…

[Diggle] Can you fly one of these things?
[Oliver] Between you, me, Ray, and Sara, I hope one of us can fly one of these things…

Then it’s Thea who gets it working.

Just last episode, there was an alien rifle just hanging on the wall of the Dominators ship. So why weren’t they using it when fighting the heroes? The inconsistency bothers me more than anything else, even Atom as Iron Man Jr.

Maybe they’re not rifles. Maybe Oliver just weaponized part of the power system.

Did Cisco and Felicity really go around and kill a buncha government employees during that rescue? Also “let’s just be dicks to Supergirl so she doesn’t instantly solve everything” got kinda old.

All in all I liked the cross over. About as close to a live action Justice League TV series as we’re going to get.

Speaking of which I just learned a new Justice League cartoon is premiering on Cartoon Network in a few weeks. You’d think this cross over would be a good place to advertise it (unless they did and I missed it).

Brandon Routh saying Kara looked like his cousin was so stupid yet I grinned.

Heat Wave keeps stealing the show. Whoever that actor is absolutely needs to have a buddy-show with the guy who played Boss Maroni on Gotham. And Supergirl needs to be Heat Wave’s girlfriend.

Steel’s costume should have long sleeves but is otherwise great. I want a decent Atom costume!

Why didn’t Supergirl remember that Batman exists on her Earth?

Overall, I’d call the crossover a winner. I wish they’d balanced out each episode a little better (the Flash ep was a Flash ep with a crossover, etc) but for a first try, they done good.

I hope this becomes a tradition like the old JLA/JSA crossovers that happened every summer (“when the dimensional barrier between worlds was at it’s thinnest”). I don’t want it every time, but the occasional guest appearance and once-a-season crossover would be great.

Weakest was the Supergirl episode, which was just a regular episode with a Flash epilogue. They could have easily had Flash show up earlier and help her, they even had a guy literally say “nobody is coming to help you”.

Cisco said “set phasers to stun” when pulling the weapons out.

Mick was easily the MVP of all three episodes

I was coming here to get that line explained, and suddenly I remembered that Routh played Superman - so never mind. Posting my temporary lack of cultural awareness in case someone else was confused also.
