Discussion thread for the "Polls only" thread (Part 1)

I have no idea what the various police officers are called. Some are hired by towns, some by counties, and some by the state. And that’s about as much as I know, and honestly, as much as I care to know.

Here’s a thread about what3words and “apposite, amusing or just surreal locations”:

And in what’s probably wishful thinking, the front door of 10 Downing St is input.caring.brain

In California we technically have both Highway Patrol and State Police. The State Police don’t patrol the highways, they protect state buildings such as the Capitol.

Male and I always sit down to pee. The doctor says that because of my back I shouldn’t lift anything heavy.

:rimshot:

I’ll be here all week. Be sure to tip your server.

How are you hitting the rim if you’re sitting down?

Ohio only has a Highway Patrol, which is, due to the turf-protective political clout of the state sheriffs’ association, pretty much limited to patrol of the highways and protecting state officials and buildings.

Great song, peccavi - thanks!

I seriously considered medicine as a career. I never got as far as picking a specialty, though. But i think i would prefer a “specially” that treats whole people, and not just a part or a single disease. Family doctor, internist, hospitalist, geriatric medicine, that sort of thing. Geriatric medicine seems like it would also present a lot of interesting challenges, as old people often have lots of things wrong with them, that interact, and need to be balanced. The down side is that a lot of your patients would die, which i imagine is emotionally challenging.

Big systems that affect the whole body, like endocrinology, gastroenterology, or orthopedics also have some appeal. But i think I’d want to be some sort of primary care physician.

I had desperately wanted to be a vet. Our family vet was very encouraging. He even allowed me to sit in on a surgery. That’s when I discovered I did not have the stomach for it. At all.

I picked radiology, because it seems to be the only career in which you don’t have to deal with actual human patients in person.

I picked psychiatry because it’s related to the work I’ve actually done and enjoyed.

4 cats. If I met someone named Caelan it would be interesting, but not unusual. It’s a fairly common Gaelic name. But if I encountered people named Havoc, Pixel or Tango, I’d report their parents for child abuse.

Pet name poll needed an “I don’t have a pet” option

Our Cat Names -

Coco Chanel (I didn’t name her, she came with that name), Queen of All That Walks, Crawls or Slithers (title granted based on her attitude)

Kai, Last of the Brunnen-C (Kai was his name when we got him, I added the title)

Snakes (which weren’t included in the poll, shame!)

Chihuaquequenotzen (Chee-wah for short), a Jungle Carpet Python

Ratha (Dumeril Boa)

Psycho Jones (California King Snake)

Toki Wartooth (Ball Python)

Blood Ocean (Blood Python)

With the possible exception of Psycho Jones, I’d assume any person with the names involved, was either quite unusual or (the latter two) excessive Dethklok fans.

My cats are Sybil (named for the Fawlty Towers character) and Murphy (named for the detective in the Dresden Files.)

My blue heeler is Crocodile and the husky/chow came from the Humane Society with the moniker Bear-Bear. I can’t see naming children either of those things.

I only have one cat, but until recently we had three. One had a perfectly normal name for a human, one had a weird name that would cause me to think the person came from some country with very different names, and the third would be borderline abusive to give to a child.

I also currently have a foster cat who shares a name with my son’s spouse. That’s slightly awkward. It’s a perfectly fine name for either a cat or a person, just awkward that they share it.

I can’t fully empty my bladder if I’m sitting down. Really. As soon as I stand up I need to go some more, so might as well just start that way. (TMI, I know)

Our current cats are Chloe and Zoe - very common human names.
The two before them were Daphne and Velma. Less common (especially Velma), but not odd.

The one before them was Cuervo, which would be a… questionable baby name.

We had friends over for a small outdoor gathering last summer. The friends brought their teenage daughter, Jenny. The neighbor’s dog also happens to be Jenny.

Well, we were chatting and Jenny the dog was barking continuously. We could hear the neighbor shouting “Jenny, shut the fuck up!”. This happened, of course, while Jenny the human was speaking.

Awkward.

mmm

Exactly this.
:+1:

My cat’s called Meave. Pronounced Maeve.
(Common name, uncommon spelling (i blame the vet))

In writing them all out, I’m kind of amazed that so many would not really raise eyebrows as a human given name.
