Doctor Who: Flux, Season 13

The species is Lupari; Karvanista was just the name of the one species-bound to Dan. Having said that, did anybody else think the whole concept of species-bond was a bit iffy (and not to mention, poorly explained)? So apparently every human has a Lupari bound to them, tasked with protecting them. Has that always been the case? If so, where were they the innumerable times the Earth got almost destroyed, or all humanity enslaved, or highjacked across space and time? And how, exactly, did that bond come about? Are we to assume they descended from Earth dogs? And isn’t this in the end just a kind of slavery, or involuntary servitude at the very least? I mean, they all literally died protecting their humans, without having apparently any sort of say in the matter…

And was every human on Earth supposed to be moved onto one of the ships? If not, why did Barf move Dan?

Thanks! I knew that seemed wrong.

@Darren_Garrison Barf!! LOLOL

And yes to the rest of both of your points!

“Find your dog?” Wouldn’t that have been insulting? Was it pandering to Dan, so he would understand, or the audience?

I get that people didn’t prefer RTD and his goofy stories, like the gas/flatulence with the slitheen. I do think the new things he created were of a scale that fit and could be something humans hadn’t seen before. As compared to the Lupari, who should have been around for a long time before now! Or the timeless child crap that breaks everything we have learned or knew about the Doctor.

There are so many things that new writers could mine for stories that could be big. What about the draconian empire? There were two episodes on them, IIRC, which opens up tons of possibilities there. It seems like all of them want to do their own thing but someone (executives? themselves) keep pushing to bigger without stepping back to see if it’s better or even a good story.

Thanks for the conversation!

You are saying that wasn’t your very first thought when you saw him? He was clearly a Mawg.

Sadly, it was not. I’m very disappointed in myself.

I’m glad the show is continuing but the way the UK does their seasons (series?), I also wouldn’t be disappointed if they took a break to figure out what they want.

Jodie Whittaker finally began to inhabit The Doctor this season … but the confused mishmosh that the writers placed her in!

Not fair to her. I want more of her with a decent showrunner at the helm with writers who understand what makes The Doctor The Doctor even as some aspects of personality change along with appearance.

Is it me? Or has the Doctor suddenly found Vulcan powers.
In episode 3 she does what could only be described as a Vulcan Nerve Grip to render the General unconscious. And in episode 4, she performs a Vulcan Mind Meld.
I don’t recall the Doctor ever having those powers in the past. Am I wrong? Has the Doctor always been able to do that? If anyone can enlighten me, I would appreciate it.
About to watch episode 5 now, if the Doctor suddenly finds the need for Pon Farr, I’m going to assume she has somehow turned Vulcan.

The Third Doctor would do that sort of thing whenever Venusian aikido strikes could move the plot along…

Likewise, the Doctor has always had some level of telepathic ability, although exactly how much varied from episode to episode (like so many other things about Doctor Who).

For example the Seventh doctor demonstrated something very like an ability to un-naturally influence someone’s actions in “Battlefield” and in the “Lodger” the 11th doctor did a Vulcan mindmeld via headbutt.

So, nothing on the NYE episode?

Finally watched it. Mostly solid? I think it took a while to fall into place. Not to say I can’t nit pick it!

The Daleks were terrible shots until they weren’t.
How did the Daleks figure out the TARDIS was causing it before the Doctor?
However, the big one, the romance. I don’t mind it. I can see traveling with the Doctor and falling for them. Makes sense. I think that is tricky for the writers. In NuWho, we have seen that the Doctor doesn’t do well on their own. They need someone with them to remind them of their own limitations. At the same time that the Doctor needs someone to travel with, if it becomes more than that, it’s tough knowing they will go on and their (probably) human love interest wouldn’t. I guess that’s how I see it and think I prefer it not explained.
I don’t know if Yaz is gone when RTD returns but I kinda hope not to see how she does with a new Doctor.

Thanks for the conversation!

I’ve seen some speculation that Yaz (or the actress who plays her) will be the new Doctor, but we’re at that “everybody and their dog is going to be the new Doctor” speculation stage so, you know, grains of salt and all that.

I liked the New Years special.

I appreciate it when a Groundhog’s Day episode/movie actually has a character admit out loud that they are in a Groundhog’s Day situation.

I liked the first half of the New Years special. I basically stopped paying attention partway through when it suddenly got stupid, and only got good again in the last two loops.

Generally I’m a sucker for any Dalek episode.

I OTOH would be happy never to see another Dalek episode, nor Cybermen, and especially not Weeping Angels.
