I think this year is more delicious. 2012 Election Night was like a great SNL sketch. 2020 Election Week has been like a full length movie. That little twist in the beginning when the bad guy almost won was a little hard to take, but it made the downfall so much more entertaining it was worth it!
I’m just a foreigner, but that has been my impression since the primaries started. Trump had a strong base of support that never varied in 4 years. The Democrats couldn’t afford to give him anything that could help him build that support - and a socialist or a strong leftie would have done just that. And, the most important thing was to get the crypto-fascist, Putin puppet out of the Oval Office.
But it was more than that. I’ve never thought Joe was uninspiring, or any of the other epithets that have been thrown at him over the past 10 months. Every article I read about him as a person and a politician impressed me.
In politics, timing is a huge thing; bigly, in fact. In 2008, running against a decentish old white guy, a charismatic, smart, principled black guy won. But in 2020, running against a horrible white supremacist who pulled in ~40% on a regular basis, a decent, centrist white guy was what was needed.
Congratulations, Mr Biden!
And thank you, my American neighbours. I can start to breathe more easily again.
The only place that “post-in votes” appears in my post is where I was directly quoting @Peter_Morris. In particular, the italicized words you highlighted were a direct quote excerpted from his post.
If you read my reply, I exclusively used the term “mail-in.”
I have been VERY critical of Biden throughout this whole election; I called him some very nasty names, I bemoaned his awkward speaking and his lack of charisma and I said many times that I believed he could not defeat Donald Trump. Well, I have never been more happy to be wrong about something in my life. Joe Biden earned my respect tonight. I fully acknowledge it’s ridiculous for me to even put it in those terms, since I am only one man and of no particular significance to anything in the grand scheme of things. Actually, I guess that describes 99% of the whole American electorate, but I can only speak for myself - and it’s not like I’m bestowing some great honor on Biden by deigning to grant him my respect. It’s more that I realize that I am glad to change my opinion of someone if I witness that person achieve something great. And, goddamn, he has achieved something great.
In retrospect, the week played out well. The election was called on Saturday morning on a day when the weather appeared to be absolutely perfect everywhere in the country, giving everybody plenty of time and motivation to go to wherever the street party was happening.
I remember reading that Obama got Secret Service protection while the primaries were still on - because he was getting an unprecedented amount of threats, often of a white supremacist nature.
I think the cats are going to hid under the bed for a while. I did a whole arms waving, feet moving happy dance and they haven’t seen that sort of behavior from their humans for a while.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this as Biden made his speech about common decency. What he symbolizes for so many is an end to an era of cruelty. So how can I say, “I reject Trump’s cruelty” and hang onto my own baser impulses? There must be a positive path forward. That’s all I’ve got tonight. I guess that speech inspired me a little. It reminded me a lot of the joy of Obama’s election.
And yes, I Facebook. Let me know if you want another friend.
I wasn’t a Biden booster but I favoured either Warren or Bernie and… hahahaha doesn’t matter cuz Biden did the goddamned job!. He literally did it. Biden removed Trump. Trump is a lame lame duck. Trump gets dumped and that’s that.
Would’ve could’ve should’ve games are what the losing team plays. Biden did it. That horse came through.
