Certainly marijuana legalization had a great election night and won everywhere it was on the ballot by comfortable margins. Biden says he wants to decriminalize it and Pelosi wants to put some form of decriminalization to a House vote (MORE Act).
But you still have McConnell running the show in the Senate and you know he won’t let this stuff through.
So, it will remain illegal at the federal level as a Schedule-I drug and the DEA can still come after you even if it is legal in your state. I am not sure how much Biden can do by executive order to tell the DEA and DOJ to lighten up on that count.
“Biden, who gave his speech with no mask on, didn’t put one on afterward.”
Here’s the more judgmental (your) version:
“Biden, who gave his speech with no mask on, didn’t bother to put one on afterward.”
To be clear, I think he should have masked after speaking. when he stood on stage not just with his own family members but Kamala and Doug as well. @bobot’s level of outrage seems misplaced, though.
This. The standards for Democrats both those held by themselves as well as by others for them are and will always be higher than for Republicans. You’d think the Pubbies would be embarrassed by this, but they don’t seem to notice that people expect them not to give a crap about anyone else.
My bold.
That’s maturity and character.
Joe does not raise people’s hackles. He’s not a divisive or polarizing figure. Another reason why it has to be him.
Yeah. “Motherfucker”?? Really?? Hot button issue. Sumpin’ else is going on there, I’m guessing.
Are you kidding? Booing and jeering at an unpopular leader as he passes by is one of the purest forms of democratic expression. It’s what free speech is for. If you can’t boo the President, who can you boo?
I agree with all of this. And hey, some Trump supporters were right. They just forgot to specify the emotion behind the tears when they said “Make liberals cry again”. We’re crying for joy, for hope, for the chance at being an America for all of its citizens. And Harris’ speech had it right, she may be the first VP-Elect biracial woman, but she won’t be the last. If my nieces wanted to aspire to the two highest elected offices in the land, they can now point out that it has happened before and it can happen again.
It is completely ok. It is free speech at its most basic and important level.
I saw a Twitter post (can’t find it now) which used the pic below and asked Twitter to find out who the woman below is so we can buy her drinks for life:
I think (not sure) the vice president has different flags on the car. The president gets a dark blue flag and the VP a white flag with the presidential seal on it. Other VIPs would have different flags and probably not be in those very, very specialized super-tank limos the president gets. As much as they look like normal limos it is not hard at a glance to see they are different and distinctive.
As to which car the president is in I think there are only two super-tank identical limos in his motorcade (maybe three…you can see two in the pic above). No way to tell which he is in so just flip them all off…only adds a few seconds to the effort.
Absolutely this ^ Good to see someone knows their econ history here.
Yes, Jackson handed over an economic time bomb to Marty Van Buren if I recall correctly. He obsessed with balanced budgets and eliminating central banking, and as you say, it was JP Morgan’s intervention in 1907 that showed us how financial bailouts work, but the federal reserve was completely underutilized until the 1930s.
If you compare econ data before and after 1933, there’s no comparison. Recessions have been shorter and financial indicators have been more stable. Of course, we’ve been undoing FDR’s legacy since about the 1980s, so it’s no coinkydink that we’ve had an S&L crisis and a full-on financial crisis since that time.
If there’s a lesson here, it’s that we haven’t won anything; we’re in an unending struggle. We live in a state of constant conflict between the forces of democracy and authoritarianism, and those opposing forces haven’t gone away; they’re in retreat, but they will regroup and launch a counter-attack.
The silver lining is that a lot of us have been frightened into action - and that is good. A lot of us - more than we did 4 years ago - realize how fragile democracy can be, and that it requires work and constant vigilance. But we can’t conclude that we’ve ‘won’. We’ve won nothing. We face a mountain of problems, and time is running out to fix them.
Ah. I wondered about that. Perfectly understandable.
Yesterday evening around 9:30 I hit a wall, mentally, physically, and emotionally. I turned off the computer, silenced the phone, put YouTube on scenes of ocean waves rolling in under a full moon and just sat. It was like doing the natural release on my Instant Pot. I’m sure steam and vapor came out of my ears for a couple of hours.
Calling it “The Not Nearly Finished National Monument to Xenophobia” instead of “The Big Beautiful Donald J Trump Wall to protect our Southern Border”-OK?
After WWII Eisenhower said to get in there and document the concentration camps because some day people would deny that that it had happened. Who could have predicted holocaust deniers on social media? DDE, apparently. So let’s leave those sections up…I’ve toured some of the D-Day landing beaches etc. and the bomb craters are good reminders for people with poor memories.
How did he avoid conviction after impeachment, again? I kept waiting for some kind of checks and balances to kick in. And now, when world leaders call to congratulate Biden, I see some of that returning—that recognition by foreign powers gave the victory some objective, non-partisan legitimacy. As other 'Pub rats pull away from him, I see cause and effect. MSNBC cut him off after 35 seconds Thursday night? Yeah, the real world carries consequences for lying. Too many dead from COVID, too many strained relations with former allies, loss of prestige in the world, etc. mean that the cost wasn’t worth it. But more is to come, and let’s hope this run is as sweet as that Pennsylvania ballot count.
That press conference mishap is killer.
Conceding would be a classy thing to do, so we can rule that out.
Ding dong, the wicked witch is dead…still going to have a Twitter account and followers. I was looking at some of Jim Carrey’s cartoons about Trump, which is how I learned about another feud of his, with someone who frequently retweets DJT. And if she can get elected, let’s remember the Donald has offspring as well…
Yesterday morning, after being lazy about my exercise all week, I booked a Zoom yoga class and took a break.
The election was called 10 minutes after the class started ( my brother stuck is head into my yoga room/closet /study and gave me the news). I should’ve booked the class a few days earlier and saved us all some anxiety.
The water only boils over when you’re not watching.
