Election Day [Week][Month[s]] [Year] 2020 follow-along thread

Biden wins Georgia …. for the third time.

A second recount of the votes in Georgia confirmed that President-elect Joe Biden won the state, the top elections official said on Monday.

Kemp and Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan have rejected Trump’s effort to pressure them into calling a special session of the state legislature to overturn the election results by appointing Trump backers to the Electoral College to compete with the slate of Biden electors based on the popular vote in the state.

I for one am NOT tired of so much wining. It’s like Biden is winning the election every week now!

Doesn’t that mean he’ll be able to serve until like 2048?

Don’t be silly.

He’ll be serving those terms concurrently.

And if I heard the hearing correctly, the Sidney Powell case in Federal Court in GA was dismissed this morning as well.

The audio was here: News & Announcements: February, 2024 | Northern District of Georgia | United States District Court

I was listening to keep myself amused. It’s always fun to hear a judge smack down Sidney Powell.

Better cite in the thread here: Trump reportedly limited US purchases of Pfizer vaccine when offered - as it happened | Joe Biden | The Guardian

Yup.

BTW, I somehow missed this morsel from the Michigan ruling:

Oof. Jab to the kidneys there.

With no help from the outgoing administration nor the GOP in general, it appears that state election officials took serious steps to address some of the voting security concerns in the recent past, steps which are now, ironically, imploding the very basis of Trumpist cries of “fraud.” Now, we’re still gonna see Republican dominated states implementing suppressive measures in the years to come but this has at least been somewhat of a pleasant surprise.

When are all the lawyer misconduct sanctions going to start?

Everyone I read keeps saying that it doesn’t matter if trump or the kraken keep filing claims and appeals because once safe harbor or January 6 or January 20 pass, it’s all moot anyway. But could he just keep filing suits for the next 4 years? There’s never a point where the legal system would say enough, way too late, get out?

For anyone like me that prefers first-hand sources. here’s a link to an article that includes a pdf of the actual Michigan ruling (still looking for the GA one) I was a little surprised at how many articles about the ruling did not even bother to include a link to it.

My pdf I linked earlier is the MI ruling (King v Witmer). Not sure which case exactly was the recent GA ruling (so many to keep track of…)

Marc Elias on Democracy Docket has a link to his Twitter feed where he usually posts the most recent filing or decision with a link to the actual court document. I believe he has the latest GA one.

I am not affiliated with him, just a desperate follower to try to understand WTF is going on and what it means.

Mentions the ruling from the bench (which is rare in Federal court), but (as of this posting) a link to the actual ruling that I can find.

This has some choice quotes from the ruling:

“For these reasons, the court finds that Plaintiffs are far from likely to succeed in this matter,” she notes. “In fact, this lawsuit seems to be less about achieving the relief Plaintiffs seek—as much of that relief is beyond the power of this Court—and more about the impact of their allegations on People’s faith in the democratic process and their trust in our government.”

The judge directly called out the real reason for these idiotic lawsuits: To destroy the people’s faith in the democratic process and their trust in government.

I follow him too. He and John Fetterman have really helped to ease my anxiety.

It was mentioned above that only 25 Republicans, or 12%, would publically admit Biden won the election. (Two insisted Trump won). I’ve been wondering how much this matters.

Yes - many fear consequences for little benefit. Some “don’t care”? Of course they do. Some are too lazy? Not really. Some see it as a loaded or ambush question by mainstream media - some truth to that, since any answer is damaging.

But not answering this question in a Georgia Senate debate is not laziness nor indifference. The question is, by not answering, are they in fact encouraging violence or malfeasance by supporters who share this perspective?

I’ve been following T Greg Doucette on Twitter also. He doesn’t post the rulings or anything but sometimes answers legal questions about what’s going on. He made a You Tube video explaining why trump’s coup can’t succeed. I hope he’s right. Maybe I need to watch it again! Someone here at the Dope recommended his video and Democracy Docket.

After 3 recounts and 2 certifications, one can say that Biden has won more times in Georgia than the Falcons…

I’d heard this as “Biden’s won in Michigan so many times he’s legally required to change his name to Ohio State.” (source)

I love the way that the Michigan official diss ends:

THIS IS THE WAY.
