Election Day [Week][Month[s]] [Year] 2020 follow-along thread

Ha ha! Trump. What a loser. I like people who get more thaan 305 electoral votes.

It’s not Rudy doing it this time.

While I’m sure this suit is as baseless as all the others, I gotta acknowledge that they found a unicorn with this Marks guy. Pretty clever to roll him out now, 1-1/2 months after the election during Christmas week when everyone is paying attention.

Just in case anyone is curious about the 110,000 “illegal” votes they are trying to get tossed…

What is known as early voting is, in most states, in-person absentee voting. You go into the designated location, request your ballot, sign the affidavit that you are who you claim to be, get your ballot and vote.

When you do this by mail, it’s a two step process - you fill out the ballot application, then the affidavit is mailed to you with the ballot. You fill out the affidavit and return it with the ballot.

Many years ago, the state of PA made a new form for in-person early voters. The application and affidavit were consolidated into the same piece of paper, the form you fill out when you go in for early voting is both the application requesting the ballot and the ballot affidavit.

Donald Trump is claiming that since the state of PA did not provide the ballot application on a separate piece of paper, early votes were not cast in accordance with the law and are invalid “illegal” votes ( but only in the 2020 Presidential race, for some reason.) They are making the claim that the piece of paper titled something to the effect of Ballot Application and Affidavit is not valid as a legal ballot application and want to invalidate all early votes*. The PA Supreme Court basically said…you’re crazy, the consolidated form actually says “ballot application” right on it and besides, we’ve been using this form for early voters for like forever.

  • except I think they may only be suing to invalidate early votes in Democratic counties, but I’m not sure and don’t feel like looking it up right now.

When you hear about irregularities in ballot applications, hundreds of thousands of absentee ballots nationwide were cast on the same day that the voter applied for the ballot and that can’t be right, there must be fraud - that’s an attempt to gaslight early voting. Everyone that votes early fills out an absentee ballot in the day they request it.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court disposed of essentially the same claim that the written application for an absentee ballot used in this election was not the “written application” required by statute. Notably, the entire WSC denied that claim; the only GOP claim the dissenters found to not be meritorious was the “written application” claim.

The WSC noted that (1) the statute requires no more than a “written application” without further details, and certainly has no requirement of a separate application and certification/affidavit, (2) the form in question was issued by the state election commission and used in several prior elections, and (3) the GOP was challenging about 170k absentee votes in Milwaukee and Dane Counties while the form in question was used by over 650k voters statewide.

wow - that’s gotta hurt -

Unfortunately once he’s gone the next toady will probably appoint the Kraken to investigate…something. And then Biden would be proclaimed to be corrupt if he tries anything to shut the Kraken off. I dread the idea of the Kraken (or someone similar) running around for the next four years claiming Biden holds a seance each night to communicate with Hugo Chavez.

Given Trump’s psychological profile, it was inevitable that when he felt the walls of reality close in on him—in 2020, it was the pandemic, the cratering economy, and his election defeat—he would detach himself even further from reality. It was predictable that the president would assert even more bizarre conspiracy theories. That he would become more enraged and embittered, more desperate and despondent, more consumed by his grievances. That he would go against past supplicants, like Attorney General Bill Barr and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, and become more aggressive toward his perceived enemies. That his wits would begin to turn, in the words of King Lear. That he would begin to lose his mind.

So he has. And, as a result, President Trump has become even more destabilizing and dangerous.

“I’ve been covering Donald Trump for a while,” Jonathan Swan of Axios tweeted. “I can’t recall hearing more intense concern from senior officials who are actually Trump people. The Sidney Powell/Michael Flynn ideas are finding an enthusiastic audience at the top.”

This is so long ago and so far back I can’t recall–but was Trump ahead in the EC or Popular vote at the end of the night of the 3rd? I know he gave a speech declaring he won at midnight, but was he ahead at that point…?

Barr to Biden:
“Eh, ahh. Ha. Mmmm. This is awkward. See, we’re friends, right? Right? I’ll just be leaving now with no one looking into anything concerning me, right??? Whew.”

I guess Barr doesn’t think he needs a pardon?

He was ahead in the sense that votes counted up to that point in many key states had him ahead. No projections were made by news agencies and most projections/estimations looking forward realized that most votes being counted were going to be Joe Biden. Biden looked very likely to be the winner, but Trump knew he had to scream “STOP THE COUNTING” and so forth to have any kind of chance of looking like he won.

Nate Silver wrote about it. It looked like Trump was ahead because results coming in make it look like an ebb and flow race. It isn’t. All votes were cast by Nov. 3 and Trump was literally never ahead in Wisconsin, Michigan, PA, Nevada, Arizona, or Georgia. It just took time to carefully count the votes.

With the Republican controlled legislatures in PA, WI, and MA, by refusing to allow mail-in votes to be counted (or in some cases even processed) ahead of election day, colluding with Trump (and his encouraging election day voting from his base) to deliberately obfuscate the results as of midnight November 3. Specifically to allow Trump to claim that the “blue shift” is prima facie evidence of widespread fraud.

(Note: Biden was ahead in AZ at the end of the day November 3 because AZ allowed mail-in votes to be counted starting two weeks ahead of election day. Biden’s lead narrowed after election day as in-person drop off of mail ballots were processed in the week following the election.)

OMG Voter Fraud!!!
Dead people voting!
And someone’s actually been charged!
The break the Trump campaign has been waiting for!

Oh wait–the guy pretended to be his dead mother and had her vote for…trump?
FAKE NEWS

I remember going to bed on the 3rd feeling very depressed, and waking up on the 4th to good news.

Election night was rough. The pundits said Texas was close, and it wasn’t. They said Florida was a toss-up but it was called early (and easily) for Trump. Trump had a lead of several hundred thousand votes in Virginia but the D.C. suburbs were last to be counted. Would it be enough? We kept hearing of a ‘blue wave’ but it really felt like it was going to fall short. Pennsylvania looked out of reach, Michigan too.

It must have been brutal for Trump supporters. I hope Hollywood turns it into a major motion picture so they can watch it over and over again.

In a way, every time one of those dipshits goes to court they live it again. Bunch of masochists I tells ya. And their leader likes to be pissed on. People are saying.

This is pretty significant: Pat Robertson has called on Trump to recognize that Biden won the election, and goes so far as to say that Trump lives in an “alternate reality” and that it would be a “mistake” for Trump to run again in 2024.

Obviously no one here is going to be swayed by anything Pat Robertson has to say, but he still has sway with millions of evangelicals who have jumped on board the Trump train, and having to choose between him and Trump could be a conundrum for them.

Given Giuliani’s role in Trump’s fight against the results of the election, I suppose this is the right thread in which to share the news that the Feds may be closing in on Rudy.

Mwuhuhahahahahaha.
