Election Day [Week][Month[s]] [Year] 2020 follow-along thread

Rudy must’ve tooted again. I just heard him say “Pardon me.”

He was ahead at that point, in the sense that you can be ahead just because they hadn’t counted most of the Democratic votes.

He had a lead early on but he did not have 270 EC votes and not all the votes had been counted yet, what with the pandemic and all. It’s only logical that the mail-in ballots, which were counted later, would heavily favor Biden. Trump didn’t want his people using mail-in ballots.

I dunno. Evangelicals may be a separate subset of Trump supporters, as opposed to MAGAbots, but recall how quickly McConnell (when he stated Biden had won the Electoral College) and Barr (when he announced there was no significant fraud and there would be no investigation of fraud) were both accused of being Deep State once they evinced the slightest parting of the ways with Dear Leader. I believe it was possibly mere minutes in real-time for them both to be publicly and vehemently vilified by the Fervent Unwashed.

I don’t like hearing this now. I don’t want to hear as much as a whisper about indicting or prosecuting anyone connected with Trump until one month from now.

I even hope they reassure everyone that they aren’t going to investigate or prosecute anyone connected with Trump for the sake of unity,

Then, one month from now — drop the freaking hammer hard on all of them. So what if they were lied to - lying to criminals, reassuring them that their crimes were no big deal, lulling them into a false sense of security, is a time-honored law enforcement technique.

You’re probably right that this won’t really change many minds – if you’re a devout evangelical who has already voted twice for a thrice-divorced, porn-star-banging, amoral politician who blatantly uses religion as a prop without any genuine Christian beliefs, it’s hard to sit up now and say, “My bad.” But I do think it’s important to keep in mind that Trump’s coalition is precisely that – a coalition of groups that don’t all align in their worldview, political goals and red lines.

I don’t think any of that matters to single-issue voters. We have close friends for many years who voted Trump simply because they are pro-life, but are otherwise liberal in other views. It is the guiding star of how they vote - the blinders are very narrow and firmly mounted on their heads. I am sure there are many conservative voters like this, be it abortion, 2A, immigration, etc. They easily disregard other info that may be contrary to their other views simply because the one issue they care most about is aligned with what Trump was saying (even if he was not actually doing anything to support that issue).

Yep. I have a cousin like that. Reasonably rational about most things, but absolutely rabid about 2A issues. He is convinced that Hillary and the Dems are going to take his guns the second they can. Forget the fact that he doesn’t own any guns on the “hit list” that goes around. He’s just sure that all Democrats want to do is take his guns. And his father was a long-time mover and shaker in the Skagit County Democratic Party. There’s just no reasoning with single-issue people.

I have two “friends” like that. One listens to (and is even a co-host on) Conservative talk radio and has turned into a blithering insane trumpist- he called Obama "the muslim in chief".

The other only does cowboy action shooting, and sure he hates Newsom and voted trump, but he has retained some semblance of rational thought.

I wonder, when people describe situations like that, if iit possible to say, “hey, I disagree with you but there is no need for us to argue - we can make a prediction and see which one of us turns out to be right. Do you want to stake out the position that 12 months after Biden takes office, your guns will have been taken away from you? I’ll take that bet - so in January 2021 the loser takes the winner to dinner, okay?”

Then it would be really interesting to hear what they say in a year, as you are enjoying the meal that they buy. (Or in the hugely unlikely scenario that they win the bet and there are no more guns in private citizens’ homes, you probably wouldn’t mind celebrating that by paying for a meal with a friend, I assume.)

I think this is actually one of the strengths of the GOP coalition - there are a number of hot-button issues where someone cares so deeply about one side that they will ignore everything else about a candidate/party. And the Republican’s tend to be on the ‘rabid supporter’ side of the issue. Meaning that there are single-issue pro-choice people, but they are far outnumbered by the pro-lifers. If you think that abortion is murder, you probably care more about the issue than someone who ‘merely’ supports a woman’s right to choose.

And if you think that jack-booted thugs want to take your guns so that they can oppress you, you once again probably care more than the person concerned about a problem that likely won’t directly affect them.

Good Lordy, Trump is threatening to veto the stimulus and government funding Bill that Congress just passed unless they come back and increase the individual checks to $2,000. Pelosi immediately said she would be delighted to do so.

Wanna bet he didn’t plan on that?

six dimensional chess. just you wait for his counter-counter-counter move.

Scatter the pieces and poop on the board?

Didn’t the Dems want more money from the start and the Repubs wanted less? It seems like this is a hit against his own party.

Conflict: Does he share a personal win with the Democrats (even more so Pelosi) or does he take a loss and stay on the Republicans’ good side?

Trumps latest speech.

Tonight is the night Donald Trump finally became President. :joy:
