Election Day [Week][Month[s]] [Year] 2020 follow-along thread

Biden has now received the most votes for a presidential candidate in history

You’re the one who made the original point that Democrats don’t sell themselves well based on voters’ economic interests. You won’t catch me saying the average American is super smart. But stupid people vote too, yeah? You still want them to vote for the good guys?

It’s not good politics to repeatedly fail to notice these things when deciding on candidates and campaigns, and then blame the voters over and over again for not buying what you’re selling in sufficient numbers. There are other options, which is a thing I know you know, so I’m not sure what’s absurd about calling out the Democrats’ arrogance for what it is.

Well, then we agree on what philosophy is at work, so that’s good!

And only as far back as “Tulsi is a Russian asset!! BS” i was thinking “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street”

So the way i see it…its basically down to Michigan

What could the democrats possibly do to try to propose a policy that the republicans wouldn’t just shriek socialism about? Every policy that doesn’t lead us straight towards a mad max hellscape is socialism to them. This is not the democrat’s fault if a significant minority of the country literally believes any sort of policy designed to benefit society is “socialism”

Well, once again Texas ends up being an enormous fool’s errand for Democrats. Despite Biden coming closer than any presidential candidate has in decades, Trump won. Cornyn cruised to re-election.

What’s more, it looks like almost all of the Congressional seats that were targeted by Democrats as strong pickup opportunities will go to the Rs, and the hopes for taking the state House (and thus having a day in redistricting) fell completely flat.

But next cycle will be the one where we break through, right guys?!? Demography is destiny, right?

I don’t understand what your point is here. Again, you just finished saying economic populism should be what they’re pushing.

Yes, Republicans will shriek socialism about anything. What does that have to do with what the Democrats’ policies should look like?

Yeah - I’m no statistician, but I’m having a hard time seeing how it is at all useful.

Personally, I sure am glad I am white, reasonably healthy, and financially secure. I’ll be focussing on doing what is best for me and my immediate family. Sure would be nice if I could have any positive thoughts about my country and its prospects, but that is hard to see - even if Joe ekes out a tight one.

Shithole indeed.

You’re saying that the Republicans being able to shriek “socialism!” at everything and have their voters believe them is the failure of the democrats on policy rather than the stupidity of the voters. How would the democrats change their policy to avoid accusations of socialism when literally every single one of the things they propose is considered socialism by that group?

If you don’t do the probability to win what do you do? I mean we could all just throw up our hands until election day. The actual way to see if predictors are accurate is to see how close they were to the percentages they predicted. Whether they were right about the results doesn’t tell you how accurate they were.

That said it seems like 538 was legitimately way off this time.

I think what he need is a black or latino Bernie Bro. I sorta wonder if it might not be someone like a modern day Julio Cesar Chavez.

But honestly, like it or hate it, branding is a part of national politics and there’s a certain brand that plays well on the national stage. And sadly, part of that branding is sexism.

Part of the reason this country is so fucked is because it just doesn’t have enough imagination when it comes to female candidates.

Well. I was afraid to look. And I’m still afraid to look. But at least it’s not over yet.

Haven’t read yet all the stuff in this thread since I went to bed last night.

I didn’t say anything about the Republicans being “able to shriek socialism.” The post I was responding to was in direct response to you saying the Democrats needed to sell their economic policies better. I’m baffled by this exchange. I don’t even know what we disagree about. I think the Democrats should sell pro-worker, pro-lower and middle-income policies. I think they should not throw their hands up when people don’t vote for them and say “they’re stupid, can’t be fixed.”

Like a higher minimum wage and universal health care? They ought to try that some time.

The best sign I’ve seen over the last 24 hours is how the networks - even Fox - said “Um, no” when Trump claimed victory. His supporters might still buy into that narrative, but so far it’s not being amplified. However, the longer this race remains a question mark, amplification of a false narrative is a very serious danger - potentially lethal to the republic as we know it.

Yes, I agree! Everybody agrees!

Since the GOP screams “socialism!!” at anything pro-worker, pro lower/middle income and their acolytes start nodding out of sheer reflex, yes, “they’re stupid, can’t be fixed”.

Forget it. There are people who are going to insist that Democrats only care about minorities unless Biden gives a speech that says “now, I know these policies help blacks too, but the important thing to remember is that they help you whites more”.

What is objectionable about Biden’s published campaign policies? Do you think that even 10% of Trump voters bothered to read them, let alone visit the web site? Or do you think they just think what right wing media told them to think? Wherein comes my “unrepentant morons” conclusion.
