Fall Semester Roll Call

Eh. German’s my worst. Two years of high school German, ending in 1995, and no Germans around to practice with == forgetting a whole bunch. Spanish is going much better though – lots of hispanohablantes around here for me to inflict my Spanish on.

Wow this talk of going back to school is one of the 3 indicators that summer is rapidly approaching its untimely demise.
And the other 2 indicators?

• Labor Day

• The Jerry Lewis Telethon

ARRRGGGHHHH !!!

Even though summer is coming to a close at least I am happy that I will not be going back to school.

I’m going back up to Rochester (and my off-campus apartment! Hells yeah!) on the 29th to get everything ready for my second year at the Institute. Oh, and lest I forget to mention classes begin on September 5th. That’s right, Labor Day. Gotta love the place

My fourth graduate class starts on 8/29. Last semester I took two classes, but work is always extremely busy in the fall so this semester I’m back to taking just one class:

ENGL 501 001 Introduction to Professional Writing & Editing

It’s a new class, and a new requirement for my program – which, appropriately enough, is called Professional Writing & Editing (when I’m done I’ll have an MA in English). I’ll be going to the bookstore this weekend to get my course materials, and I’m starting to get psyched about school starting again!

I’m also psyched about getting closer to finishing my degree: I’ve already completed 1/3 of the required courses, and I’ve even started thinking about my thesis already … mostly, thinking about the fact that I have no freaking idea what to write about. I’m seriously considering starting an IMHO thread called “Name My Thesis!”

I’m a technical writer, too, and I’m so impressed that you’re going to law school! What field are you a tech writer in? (I’m in computer software.) Is law school something you’ve always wanted to do, or is it a relatively new interest? Good luck!

I start my senior year of undergrad just after Labor Day. The highlights of my schedule are:

  • an upper-level seminar entitled “Economics of Antitrust”
  • retaking Calculus 3 because it’s the only truly bad grade I’ve gotten in my life and I’m a masochist
  • Constitutional Law (which has a reputation for being extremely interesting and extremely difficult)

I also have a couple random econ and poly sci classes to fill it out - I think I’m at 16 credits this semester (where 15 is average for an A&S at my school).

I can’t wait to get back to Baltimore at the end of August; I love my parents, as long as I don’t have to spend more than a couple weeks at a time living under the same roof as them.

Favor de no estar triste, Bambi. Puedo hablar aleman por el dos de nosotros.

“Los dos”, Dummkopf. :stuck_out_tongue: Quédate con el alemán, y yo me quedaré con el español.

Honestly, tho, German never spoke to me the way Spanish does – I love the music and the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries in a way I never did the Germans; more importantly, Spanish is a heck of a lot more useful in Florida than German is. Most of the Germans we see would be in a hotel (I work retail, not hospitality), and they speak English very, very well most of the time.

I never said that I’d taken Spanish before. Notice how I’m in Elementary I?

(and I used “el” because I was thinking that I was describing the group as a singular entity.)

Most of what I did was software-related, but occasionally, I’d also find myself doing manuals that involved some kind of physical object–for example, I once wrote a suite of manuals for a remote-controlled machine that went in and cleaned inaccessible places in industrial machinery. I also did such mundane things as policy and procedure manuals for one client, and I ghost-wrote a few textbooks for another. It was a diverse career, but I have to admit that the majority of my work involved software user, training, and maintenance guides.

I always wanted to study law, but financial demands when I finished my bachelor’s degree indicated that working would be a better idea. The idea of law school simmered in the back of my mind throughout the years though, and I finally decided to take the plunge. Better late than never, eh?

Thanks for the best wishes, Misnomer, and good luck to you too. I’ll be watching for the “Name My Thesis” thread!

I start my junior year of college on the 29th.

My classes:

Introduction to Macroeconomics
History of Europe, 1815-1914
Cultural History of Japan
U.S. History, 1890-1940
Physical Geography

I take my PreCalc final tonight (two hours, eep), then some time off before the Fall Quarter starts in the end of September. Taking Calculus I for sure, but I am still undecided on my second class. Working during the day makes the options limited unfortunately. I just finished Macroeconomics this quarter so I might take Microeconomics next. Anyway, I’m busy but glad to be here.
