Seeing as one of my threads is probably one of those which inspired you to write this post, I feel obligated to respond, despite the fact that you may be a troll. So…yeah.
Yes, people rant about family things here. We whine and bitch about the silliest things. You know what? It makes us feel better.
Posting and dealing with problems are not mutually exclusive, and venting here is arguably more healthy than ripping out the still-beating heart of your annoying Aunt Doris. Additionally, the Pit may have started as a SDMB related complaints board, but it’s evolved into a bitch session. For some people here, it’s a well-earned bitch session. [sub]Not me, however; I suck[/sub].
Most of the people who post here have paid their dues by posting in GD, GQ, and whatever other forums you enjoy. And a lot of rants about the silliest things turn out to be extremely enjoyable reads. The rest of them, though, are…well, necessary, if nothing else.
If you don’t like them, don’t read them. Seriously. The rest of us don’t cater to you, just as you don’t cater to the rest of us. I personally dislike about 95% of what’s in MPSIMS. Do I start a pit thread about it? No, I just don’t go into MPSIMS that often.
And, incidentally, my–or anyone else’s–complaining about little things in no way reflects upon our intelligence. You wanna compare brain pans? Be my guest.

Actually, I was seriously asking if anyone else felt this guy was trolling (in a slightly playful way, granted), because I was getting a slight vibe that he was, but it wasn’t obvious enough for me to go to a mod, so I wanted to get other people’s responses to see if I was way off base or not. But thanks for reading my post for what was actually said and not jumping to conclusions or going off the deep end or anything, Hamadryad.

Don’t you think its up to the Admins and Mods to decide what belongs in the Pit and what doesn’t?
The fact that a great percentage of these whiney threads don’t become locked should give some indication as to the policy regarding them.

What, precisely, is the purpose of garnering others’ opinions on whether poster X is a troll or not? If you think they are, e-mail a mod and others will do the same. If they are an asshole, it generally becomes clear soon enough anyway without the need to whip up a witch hunt.
What’s the big deal about labelling people anyway? If someone makes a point then either respond to it or do not. Sidestepping the issue by calling them a name is… nursery schoolish.
Seems to me that the moment someone says something someone else disagrees with, we start seeing these veiled accusations “troll!”, “jerk!” etc flying about. Let their own words speak for them; we don’t need a sign hung about their neck. They give us more than enough rope to hang them with all by themselves.

- No, I don’t make the rules here. This board is not created for my entertainment. But, on the other hand, you guys are all defending others posters right to complain about everyday petty problems. Be open minded you say - and then you shoot me down, for doing just that. Why Am I not allowed to post my perceptions here about something that is a small, everyday petty problem to me?
Of course, I shall listen most carefully to posters saying my style of writing is crap, or that I, as a forreigner, don not command English to your satisfaction. Then they shall be tossed in the garbage.
It kinda reminds me of a company, where the boss says: “My door is always open.” When you knock on his door to say that he’s not been available for suggestions/complaints/whatever for six months, he says: “Well we all know what you think already, so we haven’t seen a reason to reply to your memos.”

My interpretation of what you - and quite a few others - write: Critisism is ok, as long as it’s not directed at posters here.

Not by judging the responses to my OP.
Well, my intentions were not to label or initiate a “witch hunt”, but to get other’s opinions on a vibe I wasn’t sure of, but I should have known better by the way I’ve seen overreactions and pile-ons occur at the drop of a hat here.
My apologies for intimating that I suspected trollish behaviour. I will take any suspicions of trolling to mods first and only in the future.

I think you have a valid complaint here–you’re bitching about something that bothers you. The attitude that you’ve taken, however, (namely the sort-of I’m right, you’re wrong, deal with it attitude) isn’t going to win you any friends. I doubt you care about something silly like that, but. . .you know, this place isn’t very pleasant if everyone’s first impulse when you post is to jump all over you.
Incidentally, ad hominem (however you spell it) attacks are allowed in the Pit. That’s actually part of the reason the Pit exists, to keep the flames out of otherwise worthwhile threads in the other forums. As long as you don’t go “over the top” (generally construed to mean either an unprovoked and serious attack or a serious threat to the person’s physical well-being along the lines of “if I ever see you, I will beat the living shit out of you”), it’s allowed. In the other forums, however, it is not.
People here, however, do have the right to defend themselves and their friends. Maybe you’ve seen a lot of that here; I can see how many posters would take your post to be a personal attack. Hell, I’m fairly certain it was a partial attack towards one of my posts; I just, ah, pretty much never flame (only did it once, and that was on a later-banned asshole who screwed with my friend). If you give shit, be prepared to get twice as much shit back.
By the way, the fact that you are a foreigner and that you sometimes mess up typing is of almost total irrelevance here. Please don’t insinuate that that’s the reason we’re opposing you. To do so is an insult to the intelligence and the integrity of everyone on this board.

I agree to a certain extent with the OP. I’m amazed sometimes what people will choose to get pissed over. And I also think some folks go around spoiling for a fight.
But I also think it would be stupid and petty to start a thread about it. One does not need to fight ninnyism with ninnyism.
That’s just what I think.
Sure, ad hominem argumentation is ALLOWED in the Pit, but that doesn’t mean it carries any more weight here than it does anywhere else. It won’t get you in trouble with the mods, but it won’t get you anywhere with convincing people that you’re right, either. Like people that say “I don’t need a cite, because this is the Pit.” Sure, you don’t NEED a cite, you don’t NEED one anywhere, but if you want anyone to believe you, you should stick to the same high standard of argumentation here as you would if you wanted someone to believe you in any other forum. People don’t get dumber in the Pit, they just get more crass.
