Hey now. I grew up in the go-go 80s and 90s too and very few of my friends used “gay” to mean something stupid or lame. Don’t lump the rest of us in with the jackasses you hung out with.

I am surprised you tossed in your one cents worth. But, we have had a few debates in the last year or so, and in each case events proved you were wrong. I would have thought that would slow you down, but I guessed wrongly.

gonzomax, trust me when I tell you that you are not doing yourself a service picking up vocabulary from middle-schoolers. The middle-school definition of “gay” did not come into existence out of the blue. They’re comparing something they think is stupid or lame with gay men. There is a connection, and it’s a pejorative one.
That aside, you took it a whole other step up the ladder. “Gay” in that context is annoying. “Faggy” is another world completely. That’s like if the trend was to say “black” for stupid or lame. What you did is equivalent to saying that something is “nigger” instead. It’s over-the-top and it’s hurtful.

There is something called the “insider/outsider” rule. I hear black people use the N-word often. I would never use it. Similarly, I often say “Hey, girl” when talking to a woman. But I tell men who call me a “girl” that it is not right.
Very few words cannot be used by insiders. No one and I mean no one better use the C-word around me.
Oh my gosh, I have to defend Starving Artist - the world is about to end. I’ll admit that I’m easily annoyed by SA - but that’s mostly because I’m easily annoyed by most right-wing arguments. But when pressed, I think I can count on him to slow down and really chug through a solid defense of an argument. gonzomax is completely incapable of this.
Here’s what gonzomax does (and is doing) - he’ll say something completely wrong, get called on it. He’ll come up with an exception that he thinks proves the rule, get called on it. He’ll come up with another example that he thinks supports his argument, he’ll get called on it. He’ll then try to steer the argument in another direction (usually with another impressively dumb comment), and get taken to task again.
He is not going to take this discussion seriously. You will not impress upon him any new insight into how his comment was derrogatory or insulting. He will continue to behave like an idiot, but never intentionally jerky enough to get banned. We will all slowly be driven insane.

If you dealt with people in certain parts of Idaho you’d hear “Send all the niggers back to Africa” and “Kill all the kikes” used a lot. Doesn’t make it right.

Being an “elder statesman” of Gay life (i.e. - over 40!), the only time I heard Queer used was as an attack… I understand how it is being used politically, but it still hurts every time I hear it…
