Good Luck, Vancouver

So, a cluster. Fook or not aside.

I disapprove of socialized torch-lighting.

Commies.

I had switched to a laptop with Linux and no mouse, which slowed my ability read/post quickly.

Yeah, we will all remember the prong that didn’t rise. :frowning:

it was all four that lit it… or at least was supposed to be

Oh, when they all work, it is quite lovely.

the one outside seems to have all 4 pillars with the center caldroun thing.

it looks a bit “fortress of solitude” with the icy pillars.

Appropriate since Superman was created by a Canadian.

No. to the torch lighting.

I hated it. The torch is supposed to be such a great thing. To my mind, one person should light it.

I really hated the cluster-light. For me it detracts from the importance of the event.

Sorry Vancouver - you blew that very important aspect of the ceremony.

Other than that; kudos to the folks and city of Vancouver. Great opening ceremonies.

The girl singing O Canada is Nikki Yanofsky. She’s 16 years old, and is a fine jazz singer-- first sang at the Montreal International Jazz Festival at age 12.

She wasn’t a good pick for the anthem, though I enjoy her singing usually. She’s so gifted, a miracle.

The torch that will remain lit throughout the games is the one outside, and Gretsky alone lit that one.

She’s got a good voice but I didn’t like it. She started out good but IMO she hit it too hard in places.

I really didn’t get the choice of the Cohen Hallelujah. I realize that Cohen and K.D. Lang are both Canadian; it just seemed that the song itself was not really appropriate to the situation and I found myself saying “huh?” at the choice.

You’re half-right. One of the two guys who created Superman was Canadian–that would have been Joe Shuster. However, I am given to understand that the Daily Planet was based on the Toronto Daily Star; and indeed, the Daily Planet was called the Daily Star in early Superman stories. Apparently, Joe Shuster delivered the Toronto Daily Star as a boy.

Okay, I get to watch it from the beginning now. That’s a very strange version of our national anthem. And the flag isn’t flying right for that, either. Not very moving when your flag is all twisted up.

Oh my God. Phallic totem poles, too. Was that the unofficial theme of these games - ice erections?

If thats true I might actually watch this year:D

Oh, wow - massive, massive props to Nelly Furtado for dancing in those heels.

That was really lovely I thought! I loved the opening part with the North -> Ice -> Whales > Totems > Trees. I did think all the singing was pretty dreary. I love kd lang, I love that “Hallelujah” - it, too, is not a dirge. The fiddlers kicked all sorts of ass. Having a poet to introduce the Vancouver part was simply brilliant. Overall, I liked this a lot better than Beijing. It seemed more heartfelt.

I didn’t get to see the torch lit though - my dvr cut off just as the three posts went up. Did they ever get the fourth post?

All in all - what a great job from the folks who organized the Opening Show for the Vancouver Olympics.

First class all the way.

I’m watching it from beginning to end now - I must respectfully disagree with you. She went as big as you need to go for a stadium and event this size. My God, that woman can sing.

Cat, have to disagree. That was not a good rendition of the Canadian anthem.

I always think that a great singing of the Canadian anthem is when the crowd (i.e. us folks) join in lustily. We did not do that in Vancouver, ergo, not a great try.

I hope we will rectify this soonest when we win our first gold medal and sing to raise the rooftops when we hear our anthem played.

I am poised by my TV and ready to sing right now!

Maybe they will not hear me in Vancouver, but I will sing out loudly.

Hope you are ready to join me.
