Nava The nephew seems to be a smart kid. I thought he was older after reading your OP. But then I saw the picture.
My brother (half-brother, actually. I’m twenty years older than him) showed every sign of being smart when he was a toddler, but never spoke a word until he was about two. And then he starting speaking in almost complete sentences. Funny how each kid develops at a different rate. You’d think there would be some standardization in this model, but I guess that was beyond the design specifications.
I heard back from the recruiter. She’s waiting for one of my references to get back to her, and then I’m good to go. So, I’m free for the rest of the afternoon. Now I can go to the car wash and the post office. Envy me.
Hey speaking of steaks, listen to this: we have a gas grill, a brand-new gorgeous thing, and my husband set it up this weekend. When it was purchased, my mother promised she’d buy a stack o’ steaks and WE’D FEAST. Well, my dear Mama just called me, fresh from a trip to the grocery and guess what she bought? A fat stack o’ steaks! Isn’t she the bestest? I can’t wait to give the thing a try. It’s a JennAire and boy does it pass the heft-test. It weighs a TON!
It’s the grillin’ life for us this summer! And my deck ooks fabu, now that I planted the porch boxes full o’ flowers this weekend. Ow, my aching fingers.
Actually, I volunteered late yesterday and threw together a couple of paragraphs just to get the ball rolling, but luckily, I saw this thread before I posted this morning, so it’s all good.
We’re in the midst of moving everything out of the bedrooms and into the rest of the house. All that’s left is the bedding in the blue room and all of the furniture in the master. Plus the carpet in the master and the padding in the green room.
It’s gonna be a busy evening… And this time tomorrow, we get to do the same thing in reverse - at least for our bedroom. The others can be done whenever…
Ain’t tearin’ your house apart just the funnest thing ever FCM!
It’s been interestin’ this afternoon. I have had phone calls on my landline and cell phone concerning job interviews. As a result, I have an interview tomorrow morning, Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon. Plus I have calls back for two others I had voice messages about on my cell phone. Three of 'em I’m even innerested in! The other two are things I could stand for a while if I had to. Gotta keep those options open ya know. It’s just feast or famine with this job stuff I tells ya!
Ellen we did the grilling steaks thing this weekend. I bought a new gas grill last month, and so far have used it way more than I did the old charcoal model last year. Steaks, chicken, pork chops all came out great. My tip: get yourself one of those thermometers with a long shaft, stick it in the middle of the meat, and use that to judge doneness.
If I may quote Danny Glover in one or more of the Lethal Weapon franchises: I’m too old for this shit! We’re taking a break to go get something to eat, then we’ll come back and remove everything but the bed from our room. When we get up tomorrow, we have to move the bed out, and **FCD ** will take up the carpet, pad, and tack strips.
Methinks I should have birthed 3 or 4 strong sons…
Congrats on the almost-job, Jahdra! I hope it turns out to be a good one.
The nephew is a cutie, Nava! And clearly a quick learner, if he’s already figured out how tweak Mom. I’m sure he’ll be in fine form in that regard by the time he’s a teenager!
Becoming too lazy to write “Lapin Blanc” every time I refer to whiterabbit, I am henceforth decreeing that her nickname for MMP purposes shall be Alice. Speaking of whom, we took the Idiots out for a ride this afternoon and, since it’s a day off for her from the dogwashing shop, went to visit her coworkers and show off the Idiots. Everyone was suitably impressed. The Idiots, however, were a bit disappointed that we turned around there at the shop and didn’t continue to the next driveway down, which is the entrance to the park with the Bestest Dog Beach Ever. Neither Alice nor I felt like dealing with their over-excitement today, however, plus, since they got to swim yesterday, we don’t want to set a dangerous precedent by taking them there too many days in a row. It’s a bit of a major production, dealing with a dropping wet golden retriever after a swim! (A lab, of course, shakes and is dry almost before he hits land.)
And now I’m back struggling through the rest of these patent appeals. What sadist threw the first “i” into the word “stoichiometric”? Because it’s hard to find it in the dictionary if you don’t know that first “i” is there since it doesn’t get pronounced, or at least wasn’t by this guy. And how dare the attorney presenting the appeal know enough to talk about 1,3 dienes and such? Thank heaven for the search function on the Patent Office website!
ETA: I’m glad you’re starting to feel better, Rosie! I hope it’s all uphill from here. (Or downstairs, as the case may be.)
Happy MMP all! I must admit, though, I am -glad- that Monday is nearly over; at least the work day part of it.
I did not get plants for my patio yet. So, I’ll ask again: any suggestions for shade-loving plants other than impatiens or begonias? I certainly do love impatiens and begonias, but thought I might add another plant for a change of pace this summer.
My Dad is getting ready to go on his 12 day Baltic cruise! He leaves for London on May 29th, and the cruise ship sets sail on the 30th Harreton (? something like that LOL forgive my swiss cheese memory!). It’s a Holland America cruise. They go to Holland, Germany, Estonia, then they get two days in St. Petersburg, where he’s planning on seeing the Hermitage. More stops in Finland and Sweden, then the cruise ends in Copenhagen on June 11. I -almost- wish I were going with him … except we’d probably drive each other crazy. I know that he’s really looking forward to seeing the Hermitage, and hope he enjoys himself.
I’ve got an appointment with my doctor for next Tuesday - several things to discuss, top priority being my knees. I think my blood pressure meds may need to be changed too, and my thyroid still feels a bit out of whack. Heh, health problems!
Swampy, I can just picture JoeDawg - the she-wa-wa who thinks he’s a dobie! You sound like you’ve been enjoying his visits, too. Good on you for helping out your friend; I think the dogs would rather stay at the home of a friend than be boarded, which isn’t always possible.
Rosie, I hope some of your friends will drop by and visit in the days ahead. Good luck with your PT, too.
So I didn’t want to post this from work, but that school is highly disorganized. I was so freaked out when I got there because basically they told me, “Hey, we don’t have your books, we don’t have any lesson plans, so here’s last semester’s syllabus. Just go do your thang.”
Luckily as soon as I got into the classroom my 4 years of teaching kicked in and I kind of went on auto-pilot. It’s really weird, but when I teach I kind of go into this nirvana-like state and time just flies by. I also remembered that I actually do like teaching. The only thing that sucks is that I’m bascially being left to my own devices. I suppose that could be a good thing later on.
Thanks for the congrats, everyone. I feel strangely empty without my thesis to work on. I shall fill the void by making cookies.
Nice OP, Nava - welcome back, we missed you. (There’s proof in the last MMP.) That’s one smart AND cute nephew you have there… The feet on the table are adorable.
Also, rigsy - where’ve you been hiding?
Glad to hear things are going a bit better, rosie.
Drae appears to be missing, still, though…? And Spats, too.
Yay on the thesis, Hank! Don’t worry about being nervous. I was at least somewhat nervous every first day of class for all 10 or so years that I taught. As long as the nerves don’t last, you’re perfectly normal (I’ve compared notes with lots and lots of people.). Well, unless you actually put dunk prosting and lap dancing on your syllabus.
Feeling better today, LiLi? How was work yesterday? Local Best Friend is expecting in August and just sent pictures from the first months (through late April). You should definitely do this; it’s really interesting.
I am BAD at golf.
Sounds like you had an interesting weekend, Bobbio. Ick on the Achilles’, though. (And, of course you must post pics of the knee and truckster.)
I know I’m forgetting several…I need to go out and plant stuff (so that various parts can hurt some more). Also, I’ll think about shade plant recommendations, tarra. I think I missed your call for suggestions earlier.
Oooh! Snake! Snake! It’s a (dead?) snake! There is a rather dead looking black snake out by the dumpster. I have an urge to poke it and see if it is. Maggie is still wagging left, I wonder if the magic is gone? I am making sausage Jambalaya-like substance for dinner, and salad.
Glad the home improvement is progressing, MBG and FCM.
Herb, knees are the in thing among Cool Kids. Hope things turn out well.
Ah, the post office. Just where I wanted to spend the afternoon. 40 minutes. 40 minutes at the post office! At least the last 30 were in air conditioned comfort. When I left, the line was out the door, and there was insurrection in the air. After that, 15 minutes at the car wash was nothing, plus, I got to stay in the shade. And be entertained by someone’s keys getting locked in the car. I didn’t think you could do that with those key fob thingys, but I guess anything is possible. Anyway, it took 3 guys to push it off the track (and into a Jaguar, and then a Mercedes.) That was my entertainment for the day. Then I went to Target, where the entrance fee was a mere $30.60.
When I returned home, I was frightened by the GreenDot. in the mail slot. What do *they *want? Oh. Just to let me know what my pension balance is, and when I reach 55, to give them a call for disbursement. Cool, only 23, no, 22 years to go. (My birthday’s in 3 weeks.) Now I’m having Ben & Jerry’s Cinnamon Buns ice cream, since they were out of Haagen-Daz Sticky Toffee Pudding. Mmm, ice cream.
Furniture moving is done for the night. Just gotta move the bed in the morning, then we’re done. And wouldn’t you know the last piece we moved - my nightstand - would put a big gouge in the wall… I’d be more upset if we weren’t planning to repaint the hall and living room anyway. So a little spackle, and some paint, and all will be well.
The animals are all confused - their house is in turmoil!! Poor cat seems to be taking it the worst. They won’t be happy tomorrow when they get locked in the basement while the carpet guys are here. I foresee expensive pet therapy. Or not. It’s anyone’s guess.
I love watermelon and the first one of the year is always the best. I’m munching on some now.
I got dive-bombed and cursed out today by a mockingbird when I went out to see if I could reach any ripe loquats. I managed to get two - a ladder will be required to get the few other that are left. between the birds and the drought it was a very small crop this year. Next year I’m going to try to bag some on the tree to save them from the birds. Those little things are so good!
This is the best part, isn’t it? Gives you a reason to keep working, right?
Wow…was today some special day, Jahdra? Other than close to Christmas or tax day, I can’t imagine what would cause that long of a line. Car wash sounded entertaining, thought.
Snakes (not the hockey team) scare me when they’re not in captivity.
I am having dinner courtesy of Pop Secret and Stella Artois. Yes, popcorn and beerverage it is!
tarra - how shady is your patio? (Does it get morning sun, almost no sun, etc.) Also, are you planting in the ground or in containers? If you’re planting in containers, how big? And…remind me where you are? I’m going through my list of plants for stuff I know is really happy in shade, but some of it might not be available where you are. Generally, I think it’s more interesting to combine plants. I tend to overdo it, but I think it’s nice to mix at least a couple of types of plants together.
Off to look at plant stuff and think about beddie bye.
Thanks, Haze, Nava, and GardenTraveler–I have been having a very busy May. I am through with birthdays, and parties, confirmation and prom and finals. Yay–been spending alot of time out in my garden, working hard and then napping. It’s a good life!
Congrats on the move back, sort of, Nava.
I hope Rosie is doing well with therapy–it sounds like it. The big, strong PTist…I hope he’s cute and hot…
MBG–I wish I had painters in. I am sick of doing my own.
FairyMom–I birthed two sons, both of whom whine when hard work is asked for. Methinks I should crack the whip more often 'round here.
Off to do more of nothing. I like this life!
Haze–tis but a transition for you. Soon the thesis will be in your rearview mirror and speeding out of sight. That school sounds a bit freaky, though. Can I have a cookie? (and wasn’t today grand, weather-wise?)
gt, I think it was Moron Day at the post office. However, I learned that 1) it costs $46 to rent a #2 post office box for six months, 2) that international surface mail has been discontinued, 3) that signature/delivery confirmation services have been discontinued internationally, 4) global express is really freaking expensive, 5) that speaking English is not required to work at the post office, 6) that what I thought was an envelope was actually a parcel, so it cost me $1.30 to mail a 1.4 ounce letter, and finally 7) that even when the line gets to be over 20 people long, they *still *won’t open a 3rd window. Next time, I’m going to the Santa Clara Mission PO. They’re actually customer service oriented, open up new windows when needed, have an information booth, *and *an express lane!
