Gosh, they missed me - MMP

Hi kai, nice to see you. Hey, tarra! You were supposed to wait to post till I was done typing!

This is a stringently edited set of suggestions for tarra. I have lots and lots and lots more, but I’ve tried to restrain myself.

If you like begonias, you may want to branch out and go beyond regular (wax) begonias. See if you can find either Dragonwing or Angelwing begonias. You can look in any OK nursery. But you might also find them in a houseplant section of any store. I bought 6 extremely nice begonias at Marc’s on Saturday (it’s kind of a discount grocery store with other stuff thrown in). They look like they might be Rex begonias (they were labeled “foliage” ). I just know they’re pretty. I planted a dark red one with a lime green sweet potato vine and another plant I’m forgetting now. Your pots are probably too small for sweet potato vine, but you could use something like helichrysum/dichondra Silver Falls (scroll down toward the bottom of the page). You could combine this with wax begonias too. There are helichrysums in light green as well.

When we plant containers at the park, we generally go for a pointy/upright plant, a roundy-moundy one and a trailey one (yes, those are the technical terms).

I’ve taken to scouring houseplant sections of big box stores for plants, especially for the pointy ones. I’ve used several small palms. They have prettier leaves than the usual dracaena spikes that you see everywhere. I have friends who have found Alocasia amazonica “African mask” in the houseplant section of Lowe’s. (Much cheaper than at the swanky nursery.)

Other plants that I really like (that will do well in shade/part shade/part sun: Persian shield (strobilanthes) (looks really nice combined with something white (bacopa or Euphorbia “Diamond Frost” or white impatiens. Since your containers are relatively small, I’d put Persian shield in one and impatiens (or some other white plant) in another. Persian shield can get very large, but you can always prune it if it gets too big for your taste.

I love love love that Diamond Frost I linked to above. It’s a really nice filler and “blooms” all season (they’re really bracts and not blossoms). This is the third year I’ve used it and it always makes everything it’s planted with look nicer. It’s getting to be more commonly available, but I haven’t seen it at a big box store yet.

Plectranthus “Nico” is really nice and easy to take care of too. Use it like Persian Shield. You can use coleus in a similar way, too. Don’t make that “I hate coleus” face. There are a lot of varieties that are very pretty. I’ve even found some nice, good quality ones at Home Depot.

This year, I also planted this Osteospermum. I have it in a partly sunny location. We’ll see how it does. (The blossoms were just too cool to miss.)

Anyway: for variety, I’d try some type of filler either in it’s own pot or with whatever main plant you decide on. I wouldn’t do more than 3 plants per pot (don’t know what you usually do).

Hope some of this is useful. Feel free to ask questions here or via PM. And yes, kai, I’ll post some pics soon.

We now resume our non-gardeny MMP: I’m tired. Maybe I’ll crawl into bed.

GT (sometimes I get a little carried away by plants; pretend they’re kittens)

My house is soooooooo purty all painted…no more of that nasty white everywhere!!!

I’ve been busy since the painters left, dusting and vacuuming, now trying to put things back together, while the Wife thinks she’s going to take her time doing it, so she can straighten and dust and whatnot…

I just want to have a house that’s not in boxes again, is that wrong???

When I get some pictures back on the walls (more holes…sheeseh) and some things in place, I’ll maybe post some pics. The Kid says the house looks like the house in Fools Rush In, when Matthew Perry walks in his house and Salma Hayek and her family have re-painted the whole place. And that’s fair, since there’s some bright yellow and earthy-brown going on here…

All we need is the massive, wood Jesus-on-a-Stick for the hallway…

::Yes, I know it’s called a crucifix, but when I was an altar boy, one of my friends called it that, and it’s always stuck, yes I’m sure I’m hellbound for it, but at least I’m not peeing in the pool anymore::

Home from work. Dear God, it’s summer break, the hooligin were runnig amok. Is it August yet?

MBG, glad your house is painted. Is the room in the hand basket for one more?

gt, [del]kittens[/del] plants? squeee! Sorry works sucked today.

kai, glad the kids are coming home. I am going to a family reunion at teh end of
August.

swampy six weeks? I wouldn’t wait more than two before I bolted. Unless there was a hot, single co-worker.

FCM, if you go all stabby, give us a blow by blow on the MMP.

TPlayer, I keep you guys in my prayers, too.

**LiLi[/]b, how’s the stomach?

Just heard a siren outside the window, and nosy me had to go check it out. I can smell the smoke here, too, Swampy. Not at all heavy - you don’t even notice it after you’ve been outside a minute or two. But it is there.

I’m about to kick some cat butt. Magic’s favorite toys are cigarette butts; he likes to scoop one out of the ashtray when I’m not looking and bat it around the floor. He also scoops out a bunch of ash in the process. Weird freakin’ cat…

I actually got out and did some yard work today, mostly cutting down baby oak trees that have tried to sneak into my flower beds. Stoopid oak trees…

Mr. SCL’s patient is still in the hospital, so this is his second week without work and he is starting to job hunt. He really hates to leave this patient, but we can’t live with no income and none of my applications have gone anywhere. Thank goodness we don’t have a mortgage or a car payment…

I have no idea why I am using so many …

Jahdra, thanks for letting me uncross.

kai, exciting news about your family getting together. Big whoo hoo!

gt, do you work in gardening? That post on gardening was really impressive.

Thanks for all the hugs, suggestions, etc. folks. **Ellen, ** I’ve actually done what you’ve suggested before with this person. (That is a poorly constructed sentence, but I’m too tired to try and change it) I got the standard, “No, there’s nothing wrong” reply. Oh, and believe you me, I’m good at the ol’ “kill 'em with kindness” thing. I’m nothing but polite, pleasant, and professional. Trust me, I’m no shrinking violet. I believe in facing issues head on; unfortunately, I work with people who don’t have the same beliefs.

At any rate, it’ll all be over in three weeks. Effective the 11th, I’ll be moved into my new office. Unfortunately, I’ll still be doing all the same work for this office, even though I won’t be their asset. I’m hoping that once I’m moved and I’ve been down there awhile that perhaps some of this can be um…rethought. I could unofficially move sooner if I wanted, but I’ve got to clean my office out and I have some loose ends to tie up. Additionally, the union requires at least a pay period’s notice (two weeks). I couldn’t care less about what the union wants, but those are the rules. Additionally, our automation support folks have to my 'puter. If I move it myself, I risk the wrath of Khan or something. I can’t work without my computer, so I’m sort of stuck anyway.

In the meantime, I’ve got two big projects, possibly three going on. The third may be a re-do of an earlier project, because once again, the folks who should be doing it are fucking worthless. One of the other projects involves looking at the population we have that will be turning 65 in the January through June 08 timeframe, determining where they live and if where they live falls in the proper enrollment zones, AND determining if their spouse is currently enrolled in the program, or if they are enrolled as in-laws. Additionally, I have to break each of these out by quarters and zones. Okay, the zone thing…this particular director’s folks have the g-damn enrollment zones and zip codes, they should be doing this. Additionally, THEY should be checking to see if the spouses are already enrolled. NOT ME. It sucks when excuses are made for why these folks can’t do their own fucking jobs. I’m tired of hearing how busy they are. I’m busy too. I’m OVERLY employed. They’ve got three people working in that division. I’m one person deep.

The main project (for me) is looking at our entire enrolled population, determining which zones they live in, breaking them out by status, and providing maps. This will be briefed to the General the Friday before I move. Did I mention we have nearly 90,000 people enrolled to us? Yes, that’s right, 90,000.

Bleh! Enough of that.

Tokyo Player, welcome to the MMP. I, too, had been following your threads about the baby and pregnancy. I’ve been keeping you and your wife in my thoughts.

Swampster, uh, yeah, that job sounded BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD. Good grief! I can’t believe they think anyone is stupid enough to even want the job!

kai, I’m glad you popped in. It’s nice that you’ll have your entire family visiting you.

gt, that Persian shield plant looks very interesting. I may have to check that out. I’ve got the perfect spot for it.

I think I’m going to watch the news now. My stomach is still on fire, so I can’t sleep anyway.

Drive-by hello post - been an insanely busy day. I’ve been assigned another class on Tues and Thurs evenings - yay? Sweet dreams, all.

No, we flew from Manchester to Moscow and then after a few days there, we went by overnight sleeper train to St Petersburg, flying back from Pulkovskaya to Manchester.

A lot of the side trips mentioned on the cruise site are places we visited and they’re all spectacular sights - but I think by the time we left Russia, we’d reached a point where we just couldn’t deal with another palace!

Oh GT, thank you so very much!! It wasn’t that I didn’t wait for you to post; I wanted to thank Kai for her suggestions. And now I’ve got options galore!! Most of my previous purchases have indeed been either at one of the grocery stores or at Lowes. I loved the selection at Lowes, but it’s hard for me to get there and back; I think I’ll have to cave and shell out for cab fare to do it this time, though. I need a trowel and gloves too as well as a couple of bags of potting soil. I’ll probably do that first thing Saturday morning (hopefully before the crowds get there!!), then I’ll have the weekend to do my potting. Woo hoo!!

Oh yes, you certainly had me pegged on the “I hate coleus” face! That is so funny, and you’re right, there -are- some really pretty ones. I may put a pot of swedish ivy in too - it really seems to like it outdoors. My indoor plants … I don’t know, they just don’t seem to do well, particularly the ones at home. I just don’t get enough light for most of them! My work plants are doing fairly well, although there are a few that need to be re-potted. At any rate, thanks to both Kai and GT for helping with my gardening questions - didn’t mean to hijack the MMP, but it is interesting stuff at least.

Congrats, MBG on getting your house painted - pics please. And Swampy, hang in there on the job search. Yikes on that non-profit, though - definitely not the place to work especially without a paycheck for 6 weeks!!

I gotta go get ready for work. Happy Wednesday all.

I’m up and caffeinated, time for work. Somebody is still giving me left wags.

I’ve got to take one of the cats to the vet this afternoon. Rascal lost one of his fangs this weekend, and we figured it’s time he had a local doctor. Of course, that means I have to get at least his shot record faxed to me so he doesn’t have to get them all again (my Mom had his shots all updated before she brought him and his little buddy Toy down a year-and-a-half ago.

** About me:
I’m a lot taller than I look**

Ha!

On Coffee Cup #4, so I’m well on my way to alertness. That’s about it.

OK, a CatSpace page, that’s priceless. But you want to know the weird part? MySpace is blocked for me here at work, so when I clicked that link, I SHOULD have gotten the BSOD (Black Screen of Death - that screen by which the tech-folks tell us to not go here and get to work), but I didn’t.

Odd.

I did. (It’s not really a black screen of death though.) I’ll have to look at the pics at home.

Hard to believe, but I’ve had too much coffee this morning! My widdle head is all buzzy. But I got one project out of the way, so I can Dope a bit…

I got Ernie to take his ear drops, by being all sweet and lovey and petting his ears (folding them back) and sneaking the drops in. Once I did one ear he jumped up and ran off, but I was able to do the other ear later. And this morning it worked, too! Yay!

Have a great Hump Day, everyone!

Sean, is toy really 29 years old? I thought my POL cat was older than dirt at 20.

I am so lucky. I have a live-in gardener who does a bootiful job with flahrs. He’s also my mechanic, painter, and carpenter. Who needs all those extra husbands.

My wizard child has a myspace page for his Weimeraner.

We’ve had so much smoke this spring that I’m almost used to it. This morning’s news was all about how warm it is in the gulf and just right for hurricanes. More burn and churn.

I cannot imaging waiting six weeks for a check. Those must be some seriously [del]stoopit[/del] dedicated people. Our locak DHL franchise hadn’t paid their people in three weeks recently. One person said he was quiting and they told him if he did, he wouldn’t get the money owed to him. :dubious: That was when he blew the whistle on them.

I’d rather stay and play but I need to be worthy of the check I DO get.

Tupug

Morning, all. I got to feeling just wretched late yesterday afternoon – all wobbly and dizzy and headachy and alternately hot and cold, so I shut down the 'puter and crawled into bed after supper and stayed there. (Fortunately or perhaps unfortunately, being sick almost never inteferes with my appetite.) I’m feeling a bit better today, just a bit of leftover wobbly . So I guess it was just a short-acting virus or something. Although I’m stiff and sore all over from staying in bed too long. Sometimes you just can’t win.

Lots of good thoughts headed out your way from here, too, TPlay. I’ve followed your threads and want nothing but the best for you guys. I hope it all works out. Hang in there, you’ve got lots of folks behind you and Mrs. TPlay!

Great to see you pop by, Kai. And yay! on the family get-together. I hope everyone has a great time, and that you feel well enough to enjoy it properly.

My cousin who I just saw for the first time in over 20 years is now inspired to plan a family reunion, so Memorial Day 2008 it is. Since the last time we’d seen each other was at the last family reunion, it’s probably been a bit too long! Now the question becomes, can we get my mom on a plane for this event? She insists she doesn’t travel any more, but as the eldest family member she may just have to whether she wants to or not. Anyway, we have lots of time to figure it all out.

That CatSpace page is great, Sean! And what a handsome boy Rascal is! And doesn’t he know it!

I guess I should go do something productive. Like knit, since I have to knit up a stock to join FCM for a craft show one of these days! I printed out a bunch of pretty patterns yesterday, and have been figuring out just what type of stuff I should knot. It should be fun!

Morning, everyone.

Six weeks with no paycheque? They must be either dedicated beyond belief or, well, crazy. Maybe both.

I’m on fricking expensive vitamin stuff to help with the puking. It makes me very sleepy. I slept for ten hours, which is about three more than normal. I feel better, but I’m going to hang around here until I’m pretty sure I’m not going to throw up, before I go to the laundromat.

Good luck with the serious job interviews, Swampus. I can understand not wanting to gild a turd…
::waves to BioRosie::

I’m sure no one wants to know that I thought bobbio just said grill a turd.

Too late to ETA :smack:

Swamps, did Warms Springs fall through?
