Happy Fourth of July - an Independent MMP

Dang MOOOOOOM and BBBobbio ya do that one time many, many years ago and it just haunts ya for life!

Ok kiddies, put on your Dr. Denton’s and gather round. Unca swampy has a tale.

On Thursday I got a phone call from the Senior Warden of the Church Vestry. Just to explain terms, the Senior Warden is Episcopal speak for the elected “chair” of the Vestry. The Vestry is Episcopal speak for the governing board elected by the Parish (Episcopal speak for local congregation) at its annual meeting. But I digress. He called me as a member of the Vestry to explain a situation and request my vote on said situation. The situation bein’, a young man of the Parish (who IMO ain’t all there) had been arrested for criminal damage to property and was in jail and need two hundred bucks for bail. This young man is part of a family consisting of mom, sis and him who is, so it seems, forever asking for financial assistance, food and such, meanin’ at least twice a month and has been for a couple of years. Ok, yes, as a church we should help out those in need. However, I say enough is enough and this family has gone beyond the point of enough. But I digress again. I raised the question of the fact that this two hundred bucks would bond him out of jail (and I did not want the boy to sit in jail, really!) but would that also obligate the church for a couple thousand bucks should he, say, skip out of the county or whatever. A couple hundred bucks is one thing but a couple thousand is way beyond my comfort zone money givin’ away wise. SW saw my point and investigated it and turns out as he understood it we wouldn’t be so cool, I’m good with usin’ a couple hundred bucks from the Vestry’s discretionary fund to bail him out of jail. However, I expressed the very strong opinion that it should be made clearly understood to the family that there would be no more approachin’ the church for money for at least a year. Yeah, I’m mean but there are others who need help as well and I feel we’ve gone above and beyond for these folks who show up at church only when they want a handout. We good so far?

Fast forward to this mornin’ at church. I am approached by first the SW to give me a heads up that a couple other members of the Vestry may approach me about what I said about no more help for the family. Thanks Steve cause I don’t like bein’ blindsided! I was approached. Not to get into gender issues here y’all but these two are women who told me they were shocked (SHOCKED, I SAY!) that I had expressed that as a condition of lettin’ the family have bail money. I repeated my stand that enough is enough and there are others with needs also. Thus I am possibly a semi-awful person. A couple of parishoners, again, women also expressed their shock (SHOCKED, I SAY!) at my feelin’s on this. I again stated that my opinion is unchanged. Really semi-awful person am I! However, other members of the Vestry, I might add, the clear majority, which includes two other women have let it be known to me that they agreed with my opinion. Now, lest y’all think good ol’ Steve is a blabbermouth, it is the usual way we do bidness in these matters when we are not meetin’ but rather bein’ polled by phone or email. Everyone is informed of everyone else’s vote/opinion. I just happen to be the one with a, shall we say, rather strong opinion in this particular matter which I knew would be relayed. I would not have said it if I didn’t mean it. So, the majority vote/opinion of the matter was to bail the kid out (yay) but to explain to the family that no more church funds would be available to them for the next year.

Ok, the no more church funds may not be exactly true because the Priest and the Deacon also have small discretionary funds and each may do with them as he so pleases, so if they use some or all of those funds for that family well, they can. However, no Vestry discretionary funds or monies from the general fund will be used, cause, well, enough is enough and there are others with needs. YP is on vacation, so he hasn’t said anything to me but our Deacon told me this mornin’ he fully understands my opinion and the decision of the Vestry on this. This kind of leaves me with the feelin’ that he’s decided he’s done enough for 'em for a while.

Why did I feel the need to share this you ask? Cause I thought we needed a tale and I just wanted to express it so I can move on.

So, I am a possible semi-awful person, but I will give you bail money.

Oh and it has stormed pretty much all afternoon and looks like we’re in for some more. YAY!

I don’t think you’re awful at all, Swampy; semi-or otherwise. I would have expressed the same opinion.

It’s understandable that people need help, but it seems to me, at least by what you’ve related here, this family is sort of sucking dry the teats of kindness. There has to be a limit so others can benefit as well.

Well, must finish prettifying and head off to the sto’ for sustenance and what not.

Fly-by post to say we can’t do red for prostate. We’d have to think about the potential hanky code implications and that a bright red anything for prostate would just make me giggle.

[/QUOTE]

Looks like the “official” ribbon color for prostate ca is light blue. It’s crazy how there seems to be a ribbon color for just about any sort of awareness you could imagine. There’s probably even one for splinters from old teeter-totters awareness.

that one would be puss green.

Well, swampy, I must say I’m disappointed with your story. No beer, no screamin’, no human sacrifice, no gunplay - boring!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

The water in the aquarium has been changed, the dog and cats have been fed. I’m thinking Bert’s or Bad Chinese should feed us tonight. **FCD **just voted for Bert’s, so that’s that. Wish we had a good BBQ joint nearby, tho. <deep sad sigh>

While I, too, am disappointed that your tale only had a minor amount of recreational outrage at the old hen busybodies, I commend you for not confusing charity with being a pushover.
Oh, Rosie, I need to point out that the oozy stuff from an infection is pus. If the other spelling type is green, that means it is suitable for Captain Kirk. :stuck_out_tongue:

I didn’t say this was a tale of Thursday night at the bowlin’ alley! :stuck_out_tongue:

Day-um! What kind of bowling alley do you go to, Swampy?

Food for the humans and treats for the dogs have been purchased. I now need to clean my kitchen because my son brought down all the dishes he had in his room. Every bowl and every drinking glass, along with assorted silverware. There is actually more than a dishwasher load there and I am not happy.

I’d make him do the dishes, but we went to Mt. Rainier with my mother, daughter and nephew and I want them done today, before they get back.

Ya know, I took chicken quarters out for chop-chop tonight, but more and more I’m thinkin’ BLTs are the ticket for dinner.

God, it’s almost dinnertime, and all I can think about is Bad Chinese, BBQ, and BLT’s. Thanks, MOOOM and Taters.

Can anyone tell that I’m HUNGRY?

Taters it’s just your average neighborhood family friendly bowlin’ alley. Why do you ask?

I just popped in to tell MOOOOOOM I had me some ribs, coleslaw, baked beans, cornbread and a big ol’ glass of iced tea at Sonny’s BBQ. Just thought you’d like to know. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m making homemade ribs, NOT salad, corn on the cob, baked beans and peach cobbler.

Ta-da!

“Average” as compared to what, Swampy? The back hills of the Appalachians?

My poor Polar just isn’t shaking what ever is wrong with him. That dog is going to send me to the poor house, I swear. Bleh, time off from work and what I’m sure what be a cheap visit to the vet. Actually, keep your fingers crossed that it doesn’t cost me an arm and a leg, please.

High drama at the church, huh, swampy? Gotta say I agree with you, though.

Hope Polar feels better soon.

We’ve had a Psych, Season 5 marathon this weekend. Watched the whole season in two days. (I’d seen most of the episodes, but nephew and brother hadn’t.) It’s still really good. I’ll watch it again on my own during the week, I think.

We had fried chicken from the grocery and mashed NOTs. Later, we’ll have some mangoes and blueberries. Right now, the boys are washing the dishes. Not having a dishwasher makes me REALLY cranky. We can only use one side of the sink, which is even more annoying. I just have to survive till Tuesday morning when the appliance guy comes to install the new disposal.

We’ll be going out for our walk in a bit. Then it’ll be practically Monday. Boo.

Hugs all.

GT

Taters you just go to borin’ bowlin’ alleys is all. :stuck_out_tongue: Poor Polar! Hope he’s better soon and appropriate/inappropriate appendages crossed for a not too expensive vet visit.

High drama indeed gt. I’m sure I caused some coffee cups to rattle even.

If you want that, just read some of my MMP OPs. Or next weeks opus about the transvestite midget hooker, the herd of oxen, and the Tijuana jailbreak.*

Worked for 14 hours, now it’s beer and foods.

Welcome back Herbs!!!

[sub]I am totally making this up*[/sub]

[sub][sub]at least until the statute of limitations runs out in 2034*[/sub][/sub]

[sub][sub][sub]***if not, can I borrow lawyers, guns, and money from your church, swampy?[/sub][/sub][/sub]

It’s a little late to be adding to the MMP, but I thought I’d share a recipe.

The original version of this was pretty much ginger ale mixed with lemonade. I reduced the amount of ginger A LOT, but it’s still good for heat and upset tummies.

I’m going to make about three gallons for Ren Faire next weekend and had to retest the recipe (I made it once before and it still had too much ginger. It originally called for two large pieces. I did one. Below is just about perfect)

Kitty’s Ginger Lemonade

Ingredients:
ginger (unpeeled), about 1” cube (more or less). Cut up into small chunks.
2 limes
3 large lemons
sugar
water

Chuck the ginger in a pot with four cups of water.

Cut the peels off the lemons. Put the peels in the pot. Cut out the seeds.

Juice the limes and lemons and add the peels to the pot.

Heat the water, ginger, and peels on high and simmer for four minutes, stirring often. Remove from the heat and strain.

Combine the liquids. This is your concentrate. You end up with about 4 1/2 cups of liquid.

If you just want to make a glass, combine 1/2 cup concentrate, 3/4 cup water, and 1/3 tsp sugar.

To mix up the whole batch, add 3 tsp sugar and 6 3/4 cups water. (It ends up being 11 1/4 cups or a little over two-thirds of a gallon)

Oh, I should point out, I haven’t tried it with both limes yet. I did one and couldn’t taste it. Two might not be enough either.

New MMP

Hey now! Our bowling alleys are quite boring here!

looks at map

Oh, right. I’m in the *front *hills of the Appalachians.

Carry on.
