I had a conversation with a buddy of mine just yesterday along related lines - he said he grew up in a small town with little entertainment and as a result gravitated toward watching old movies with his dad. Later on, he found himself somewhat alienated from his peers because he knew who John Wayne and Edgar G. Robinson etc. were, while their pop-culture touchstones were far more recent.
I described a somewhat similar experience stemming from me reading a lot of MAD Magazine specials and digests when I was a kid, typically parodies of pop-culture from at least 15 years earlier, giving me a comparable distance from my own peers. Further, I said things like “By George” a lot, because it was a common somewhat sarcastic phrase from MAD’s early years when they were a comic and not yet a magazine. I would have been reading reprints of these stories in the late 1970s, 25 years after they were first published, and my vocabulary became similarly dated.
In summary, CosmicManiac is certainly dumb, but may also be using outdated cultural touchstones because, not to put too fine a point on it, he has no friends among his peer group. My dinner buddy and I gradually got past that, but CM perhaps has not and perhaps can not.

This thread is very timely, because I’ve recently had one of those experiences where you suddenly notice a poster you hadn’t really been aware of before. In my case, it’s Helena330. Over the past few weeks I’ve read several of her posts and thought, “wow, that’s great - I completely agree with the sentiment, and I like the way it was put, too. Who said that?”
