Help me get unstuck – New cologne needed

Perhaps I’m not stuck in a rut at all, but I have this eerie feeling that I am. I’ve worn Drakkar cologne for many years. It smelled nice, I got lots of compliments, and so I stuck with it… but has it been too long? Am I wearing the new millennium equivalent of English Leather? It’s probably been a year since I’ve gotten a real compliment on my cologne, and I keep hearing the Time Warp track from Rocky Horror in the back of my head nowadays when I spritz it on.

So is it dated? And if a change is needed, what to?

Well, I have a few different colognes, but the one that always provokes a comment is Clinique Happy for men. I haven’t met a girl who doesn’t like it.

Next complimented is the new CK fragrance, Crave.

Others I like but have yet to be complimented on are T by Tommy Hilfiger and Armani’s Acqua Di Gio, although the latter is a little too popular right now (too many of my friends wear it).

Anyways, get yourself to a Dillard’s or Macy’s or whatever and take a sniff of those.

wouldn’t that be unstunk?

sorry - it was there, I had to take it…

Contradiction by Calvin Klein is what I’m wearing these days.

Speaking of contradiction, I have to vote for no cologne. Just be clean and fresh and that’s nice.

(If I had to vote, I like that “Boss” by Hugo Boss. Mostly because it smells fresh and clean, and not “cologny”. )

Give Basala from Shisheido a try. Also, Angel for Men from Terry Mugler, is very different. I’ve had lots of compliments on both.

Since I found it I’ve been happy with Smalto which is a French cologne from a clothing designer. My wife likes it and it’s uncommon enough that I don’t smell like every other Tom, Dick, and Harry. The secret is to use it sparingly because it does have a strong scent.

Personally I’d just head to the local mall and find a fragrance shop and get a ton of samples, try each one out, one a day, and see how they last and interact with your body chemistry. When you find something that you like, go with it. Don’t worry so much about getting compliments on it, just get a distinctive scent and stick with it. When we were dating I once let my wife borrow one of my silk shirts when she went on a trip with her churchgroup(IIRC, could have been a different group) and I gave the collar a few spritzes. She said it was great. She really felt comfortable with the nice feel of the silk on her skin and the scent of her boyfriend at hand. Several of the other ladies in the dorm commented on the fragrance as well, saying they liked it.

Enjoy,
Steven

Nautica Competition always (and I mean always) gets a compliment. Trust me on this one.

HUgo Hugo Hugo Hugo Hugo. Though don’t come near me with it on, because I’ll get mad that you’re wearing my SOs cologne!

I smelled something called “sexual” at The Bay the other day. It was pretty nice. Not too strong, and according to the sales lady, “designed to keep the woman close to you”, which I can believe.

I occasionally wear Pi, by Givenchy. If nothing else, it gives the wife a chance to say “Mmmmm… Pie…”

I’d have to second that you might consider dropping the cologne thing altogether. A friend of mine always said that you will never dissapoint by smelling “clean”, but you always run the risk that someone finds your “odor du jour” offensive.

If I don’t wear anything, I’d smell fine, but would lack the chemical attractant in my arsenal.

As for just going and sampling… I have a terrible sense of smell. I only gage how good a cologne is by compliments received.

So is it resolved that Drakkar should be out in favor of one of the suggestions?

Obsession for Men is yummy, yummy, yummy! I simply cannot resist it.

curve…mmmm…although it has become kind of cliche. my girlfriends and i call it “pretty-guy smell” nowadays. but it is still delicious.

my guy wears nautica also, which is very clean, very light. my vote’s for that.

I wouldn’t ditch the Drakkar forever so quickly- As a bona fide girl, I still love it (early SO wore, never really got over it) although if you’re thinking of expanding I recommend Gap’s Blue…it’s definitely…attractive.

Want to smell good enough to eat? Thierry Mugler’s Angel MEN has a strong hint of chocolate! Imagine having women salivate after they get a whiff of you.

Armani Acqua di Gio you can’t go wrong

Spring/Summer is great for Tiffany Sport and L’eau D’Issey by Issey Miyake.

Fall/Winter has found me wearing either the previously mentioned Pi, or Rush by Gucci.

Minor Rant - Damn you Tiffany’s for pulling your colognes from retail stores so it can only be purchased in your own stores. grr

Lauren’s Romance for men smells quite nice on Bubba, as well as Lauders pleasures.

Kenneth Cole has come out with a new clean smelling fragrance for men (it’s in a round bottle, and called just that. Kenneth Cole).

Red for Men, is another one of my favorites on men.

Oh, while Tommy is nice, I don’t know about the men’s fragrances, but the ladies don’t last very long.

I hate to be the one to break this to you but…

Gap Blue was discontinued. :frowning:

They have new stuff out now, that isn’t nearly as good - which is some Universal Law apparently. Make a good product, get people liking it, then pull the rug out from under then & offer a new (inferior) substitute. I miss Gap Blue.
