Hey, good for Miley Cyrus! The fundies are mad at her.

Do I have to read Mein Kampf to know Hitler was an asshole?

Wait, why does she hate Radiohead?

Miley didn’t pose nude. She appeared in a Vanity Fair pictorial sitting on a bed with her naked back to the camera. For all intents and purposes, it looked rather post-coital. Thus a bruhaha was born.

Finally! An excuse for my disturbingly vast knowledge of Young Hollywood!

It indeed was started by the Miss California controversy. The conversation on Twitter is as follows, as best as I can find on both their accounts: (headlines “PH or MC” as to who is speaking. The “@(username)” means the comment is directed specifically to that person’s Twitter account)

I don’t think Billy Ray is a super-right-winger, but I was just surprised at the fact that Miley said something so liberal and Billy Ray happens to be on the board of the Parents Television Council, a very right-wing organization run by the very right-wing L. Brent Bozell. Miley never appeared nude, but she appeared pretty close to it. Besides that professional photo, there have also been some suggestive photos of her in her skivvies leaked in various ways.

What has Miley overcome? A hell of a lot. In her autobiography, Miles To Go by Miley Cyrus with Hilary Liftin, she talks about her troubled times in sixth grade and how the kids would make fun of her and torment her and once locked her in a bathroom, and how she had to make the difficult decision between being a cheerleader and an actress. She picked being an actress, and obviously reaped the rewards. She has a literal hole in her heart and tachycardia (her heart beats too fast). She had a bumpy love relationship. She nearly had a Christopher Reeve moment on the set of her movie. All those scandals. Okay, it may not seem like a lot, but the fact that the entire world has her eyes on her- and the fact that she’s only 16- makes me respect the fact that she’s able to keep a level head in all of this. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because we tend to see celebrities as being superhuman. Maybe it’s because she’s young. Maybe it’s a mix of both. If her TV show had a theme, it would be “being famous isn’t all fun and games- celebrities face the same problems you do. And if Hannah Montana can make it through the sticky parts of life, you sure as heck can.” And the fact that Miley Cyrus can do it too…well, that just makes me respect her.

At the Grammy Awards, she wanted to meet them after the ceremony because she was a big fan of theirs, but they refused- I think because they said they were too busy. She commented afterwards that she was going to “ruin them” for that.

This is an example of how much she’s overcome? I literally can’t stop laughing. Did you type that with a straight face, or is that a joke?

I think mobo85 is whooshing us.

(I sure as hell hope it’s a whoosh)

That is pretty funny. Cheerleader or actress? What a Sophie’s choice.

Actually, it’s not even a choice. Who would turn down a TV contract to be a nobody cheerleader.

Plus, she was already a rich, celebrity’s kid even before that.

Nothing against her, but I don’t think she’s really “overcome” that much. She’s not exactly an Auschwitz survivor. She’s had an exceptionally privileged life compared to most people.

ETA a “bumpy love relationship?” I thought she was supposedly a virgin. How angsty could her relationship history possibly be? Did a boy totally blow off her texts or something?

And so the Harvest Sacrifice is chosen . . .

[Vespasian]Sit, cynic, sit! Down. Staaaaay. Good boy.[/V]

The statements quoted in the OP are Twitter messages, which are intended to be short – too short to include the legal disclaimers and copperplate that would be required to ease your suspicions. Are you really so distrustful of any self-proclaimed Christian that you cannot believe they might ever actually agree with you?

The interpretation you describe is certainly one that many have embraced over the millennia. It is perhaps the greatest irony in the history of theistic thought that the persecution, torture and slaughter of untold millions could be viewed by the instigators and perpetrators as acts of love.

This being said, you are incorrect in your unequivocal claim that this is “the real Christ.” The New Testament is a document cobbled together from various sources and tells different (sometimes contradictory) stories from different slants. Those who wish to see Jesus as the ultimate blood-soaked hanging judge will find much scriptural support for this point of view. This doesn’t make they’re right.

Some people do change their minds. Were it not so, there would be no progress at all.

Okay, maybe I am giving her too much credit. Maybe she hasn’t “overcome” anything. The main thing that I am amazed about is that people make fun of her for being, as she put it in one of her Tweets to Perez Hilton, “a dumb hick,” where some of the comments she’s made make it obvious she isn’t.

She had a very close relationship with Nick Jonas (or “Prince Charming” as she calls him), and they spent a lot of time together. They eventually broke up, and she wrote this song in response. “I wanted to punish him, to get back at him for hurting me. It starts with a list of what I ‘hate.’ But I’m not a hater. My heart knew from the start that it was going to turn into a love song. Why does he get a love song? Because I don’t hate him.” I have nothing to add except Miley obvious can’t count, because that’s a lot more than seven things in that song.

Glad you’re not a psychologist. How lucky can she get, being a celebrity’s kid, you know? And teenage angst? Meaningless. Follow that with overnight stardom when she’s still in a training bra. What more could a girl want?

It’s a matter of perspective, DTC. And the viewpoint is from inside their heads, not ours.

Really? I don’t think so. I keep hearing the sword quotation offered. But I don’t recall a lot of things that he said that were violent. I know he was pissed at the money-changers in the temple. Did he say he was going to send them to hell? Did he specifically say he was going to send anybody to hell? Did he say anything like " Love one another except for ____________? Some of this I know the answer to, but some of this I don’t.

Of course there are other parts of the NT that are violent, but I don’t think they relate to anything that the Christ said or did.

Meanwhile, back to Miley: I think that she knew that what she was saying is controversial. Why wouldn’t she?

Yes, that’s a good thing. Miley Cyrus definitely got some more respect from me with that. Not that I ever hated her, I am just not her target market. Hehe, now maybe she’ll have gay kitsch pop cred, that should more than make up for the few tightasses who want to stop liking her for this. Likely they thought Pop music was evil anyhow. Just wait til she starts gyrating her hips more than she currently does.

The way I hear the ‘Not peace but the sword’ quote is allegorical.

Christianity did in a very real way challenge tribal affiliations by making the religion supersede family loyalties. So it divided brother against brother, mother against daughter, in a very real and actual way. This bears out historically. Christianity was a direct assault on tribalism and kicked in the door for many of the universalisms that arose later on in history. So the dividing of families was the sword. It didn’t bring peace it brought strife and persecution to the early Christians and still does in places where Christianity has not heavily penetrated.

Well, I can certainly see why the AFA is upset with these blasphemous and heretical perversions of Christianity…:rolleyes:

Miley said something in support of gays and now there are people on this board who are “reconsidering hating her music and her movies”? I smell a genius Disney marketing campaign…

well, if it’s come to “Standing up for [Insert minority here] Rights is a good marketing move,” then I, for one, welcome our new Marketing overlords

I support gay rights too.

On a totally unrelated topic, I’ve made a CD of my own. It’s an audio recording of me wiping my own ass. 5 bucks. Send me a private message and we can work out some kind of a transaction.

Thanks for that info from yesterday mobo85, I do appreciate it.

Btw, I found the source of the offenderati. One Million Bigoted Moms (which probably has only a few dozen members who all look like Virginia Foxx).

Boy, I thought I’d read some nasty cynicism regarding Susan Boyle. This takes the whole cake and all the flour in the world besides.

I am sorely tempted to flood the “complaint form” linked to on that page with complaints about religious TV programming.
