Hey, good for Miley Cyrus! The fundies are mad at her.

I had the urge to write them complaining about Miss California’s offensive plastic boobs.

Was I the only one thrown for a minute and thoought that she was talking to PARIS Hilton? That would have been…odd.

I’m sure that part of the reason she felt able to say these things is that if Disney does get caught up in some kind of uproar over her comments, she can fall back on other things and bring her fans with her. Another pop star might not have that cushion. Not taking anything away from her, I applaud it, and I’m amused at the tight spot she seems to have put her “handlers” in if they get angry anti-gay messages.

I’ve never understood why this matter. Who cares what Miley Cyrus thinks about the issue? If Miley Cyrus was against gay marriage, would that change any minds? Of course not. She is an entertainer; my daughter likes watching her and she seems to promote quality values on her show.

If in her private life she snorts coke off of a gay stripper, I could care less.
If in her private life she is a virgin who goes to church every day, I could care less.
I don’t care if she’s a communist. Who gives a rat’s ass?

The tighty righties already hate Disney for “hosting” Gay Days (even though they don’t actually have anything to do with the event), allowing their various wedding chapels to be used for same sex weddings, and extending benefits to same sex couples.

I doubt there’s much they could do to piss the religious right off more short of outing Mickey and Donald.

It warmed my heart to see this thread. My three year old son absolutely adores Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana, so she is on quite a bit in our house. It’s nice to see that a 16 year old celebrity has such tolerant and compassionate views. I don’t let celebrities serve as role models to my son (that’s what my wife and I are for), but it’s nice to see that his favorite singer and actress gives public opinions that go beyond the safe, conservative crap that many American Idol singers say in interviews.

I remember being 16, and the idea I could fall back on other things wouldn’t have been a major part of my thought process (such as it was) back then. I can’t speak to how attuned to the “public perception with current sponsor versus long term marketing value” equation that might be running through Ms. Cyrus’ head, but I’m not convinced that there was a lot of long term thought in this.

That said, I can give the young lady props for speaking her mind, regardless of her estimate of her wealth. If she’s smart enough to figure she can “fall back on other things and bring her fans with her”, she’s smart enough to remember what happened to other young people who made it big in their teens and all of the sad, sad VH1 specials and local commercials they appeared in.

I think Miley has increased her chances of becoming a Mandy Moore to 80%, and decreased her chances of becoming a Britney Spears to 20%.

Has she spoken out on the issue of bears shitting in the woods? THEN we’ll see some moral courage!

Close minded generations die, that’s why theres progress and thats why it’s slow.

Everybody dies.

To suggest, though, that people don’t change their own minds is silly. When I was younger, I thought there was something wrong with gay people. I didn’t think they were bad, or that homosexual intercourse should be illegal, or anything- I just thought of homosexuality as a disorder.

I’ve since (through a combination of watching society becoming more accepting, and reading and participating in debate both here and elsewhere) become totally tolerant* of gays and lesbians, to the point that I’ve volunteered as a sign-waver for gay-rights campaigns and railed against the religious right’s anti-gay crusade here and elsewhere.

*tolerant is probably the wrong word; it implies that I was previously intolerant, which I wasn’t, exactly, although when I was 15 I could have (and did) called somebody a fag and not felt a twinge.

When I was growing up I didn’t even realize there actually were gay people, I thought it was just an insult.

You’ve gotta figure Miley Cyrus knows and is close to quite a few gay people. Whatever squeaky clean act she puts out, she’s an entertainer who works in Los Angeles. I assume quite a few of her publicists, stylists, producers, and whatnot are gay. So it’s not too surprising that that she sees that gay people are human beings who deserve God’s love.

Although I have to admit the cynic and conspiratorialist in me isn’t wondering if she isn’t laying the seeds for her inevitable transition from teen pop idol to gay camp icon.

It certainly can’t hurt.
Miley Cyrus is getting older; she can’t cater to the six year old set forever. She will need to shift her target demographic. I think she wants to be a star forever, and female singers with decades long staying power all have one thing in common:
The gays love them.

I don’t think she’s doing it just as a ploy, but rallying the gays behind you is never a bad move for a female pop singer.

The road to pop diva superstardom runs through West Hollywood, the Castro, and Christopher Street…

And in fact she was a cheerleader for a while so it’s not like she never got the chance. According to one of her co-cheerleaders, that’s where she learned all her dance moves.

Ok, I’ve been sick. It’s the fever that led me to choose E’s “Miley Cyrus” show.

I’m impressed! Pissing off the fundies can be quite entertaining; Miley will definitely earn some new fans from this.

More importantly, maybe the extremists fundies will lose some support over attacking a little girl who’s only crime is saying god love’s everyone.

Nah, they’ll just dig out the Vanity Fair photos, call her a slut and think they’ve scored a major moral victory.

In contrast to Miley, good old boy Samuel Wurzelbacher (aka Joe the Plumber) just said he wouldn’t let “queers” anywhere near his children.

Sam, I hate to break it to you, but those “actual” homosexuals? They’re not your friends. What gay, other than the most self-loathing kind, would be friends with a man who automatically thinks you’re a pedophile eyeing his children?

The difference between Miley Cyrus and Sam Wurzelbacher is that Miley and what she thinks actually have some relevance.
