Well thanks swampy for the validation. I mixed up a batch of blueberry muffins while I was sipping the first, started watching Field of Dreams with my daughter and sipped on another. I dozed for about 15 minutes, but woke back up in time to cry at the ending. Jumped in the shower and when I got out the sun had broken through the clouds! Yay!
I gotta go out and deadhead some posies, and we are having left over steak for supper, with some baked (N.O.T.) taters and some of the veggies in the fridge before they go bad. I know I saw some 'maters in there, also some fungi, so it will be a good supper. Ice cream after, I will salvage this day from my down-in-the-dumps mood yet!
Glad you’re dancing again, Dot. You always sound much happier when you can dance; keep pluggin’ away.
fetus, go study! It’s good for you! (I’m having a motivational moment, can you tell?)
Had a lovely, flower and garden-filled day. The Lily Festival was REALLY nice. It’s a beautiful setting in the hills. You walk from the parking field through the woods into the gardens. There are a couple of ponds, several major garden areas, and lots of little interconnecting paths between them.
There were more daylilies blooming than asiatic lilies, but it didn’t matter, cuz they were all pretty. Bought a couple of plants; a real nicotiana that’s supposed to be fragrant in the evening (we’ll see) and an annual butterfly milkweed that’s very pretty and will look nice near my other milkweeds. You can collect the seeds, apparently and replant. This one has red around the orange (or maybe the other way around) and is very striking. After the festival, we went to a daylily grower - meh. OK, but I’ve seen better.
Then I came home and started in on the last part of the crabapple beds. Got the newspaper all down and the weed block on top. I’m getting up early to mulch so that it will be done. Tomorrow is going to be an all-day garden tour and then dinner extravaganza. (In case you can’t tell, my friend and I declared this have-a-vacation-at-home weekend).
Now I’m off to read for a while and then sleepy-bye.
Back from Ikea–the one in Bolingbrook. Very nice and got some stuff. Got a set of bookshelves for the kitchen (never mind), and a nice mini drawer cabinet type thingy which only took me 20 minutes to put together, and barstools–yay! We can finally sit down in the kitchen.
I worked in the yard today–it was hot. What is up with that? The nice weather is supposed to STAY. I have talked to the people in charge and I thought we had an understanding. <sigh>. Anyhoo, my beds are looking OK, but I must confess myself to being slightly pissed that an MMPer in Alaska can grow delphiniums and mine died. Stoopit plants.
I also got purty today-2+ hours in the hair salon. She didn’t have time to flatiron me <pouts>, but at least it’s touched up and not shaggy anymore.
It’s getting late and I am off to bed. Sweet dreams, MMPers.
Thanks gt, the columbine is quite lovely. If my digital camera hadn’t died I would take some photos, maybe I’ll get a friend to come over and take some for me. If you’ld like, I am saving seeds to share, and would be happy to send you some. Who knows, they might bloom true! Your crabapple beds make my knees weak. I swear I am going to get a few in my yard soon.
The lily show sounds like fun. Asiatics bloom quite reliably here, I had a bunch at the old place, but decided to start over when we moved. I lost my stargazer when we moved, which I was told by the garden club won’t grow here, but if one finds the right little bit of microclimate, it will. I have never seen a milkweed in real life, but they sound lovely.
Poor rigs, the biggest problem I have with my delphs are the slugs when the plants are just coming up, but after that they put on quite a show. I like to put deep blue delphs with crimson sweet william, it looks very nice under our overcast skies. Be comforted, I have a terrible time with roses, hybrid teas are nothing but annuals here. I want to try some rugosas as well as the hardy Canadian morden roses.
Skiffman ran in long enough to take a shower and then leave again. Another poor day of fishing, and another day with whales in the seine. sigh It can’t get much worse, so it must get better, right?
The sun is shining at least, thank heavens it decided not to rain. I am going to watch a movie with the kidlets and try not to be too jealous that they get to go see the new Pirates of the Carribean tomorrow. I have such an obsession with Johnny Depp as it is, but put him in pirate clothing and I lose it! Yum!
I’m up, I’m up!! ::Rubs sleep from eyes and tries to whap the light up side the head so it won’t be so bright.::
OK, so I’m more awake than that and I did have a choice of getting up or staying in bed a bit longer, but I have so many things I want to do today and basically only have till 10 or so. Already put a load of laundry in the washer, emptied the dishwasher, and put additional dishes in. Am finishing breakfast. About to put recycling in appropriate containers and put clean laundry away. Then it’s off to mulch stuff.
Thanks for the compliments, kai. My delphiniums were (I think) eaten by the lone rabbit that has made its home near my garden somewhere. It chewed on my yarrow as well, but that came back and probably benefitted from the the early pruning. I’d never seen milkweed before I moved into this house. I had a real challenge identifying some of the plants the previous owners put in (they weren’t that hard to identify; I just didn’t know nearly as much about plants as I do now), mostly because I’d only had a little bitty piece of garden at my last place and really no garden at the previous two.
I allowed myself to sleep in till almost 6:30, but then I was awake till after 11 last night, so it’s not like I’m a slug or anything. 2 loads of laundry for today - the first is in the washer. The critters have been fed, the dehumidifiers emptied, and I’ve read and written an email to the mother of the girl who’s on the road trip with my baby.
She (the mom) has a friend who works in car financing, and apparently they deal with less-than-reliable borrowers sometimes. So they install GPS units into the financed vehicles in order to track them if necessary. She (the friend) loaned one such unit to the girls. They got some software for their laptops so they can use the GPS to find themselves, and it’s already helped them out when they encountered a detour. Plus if we don’t hear from the girls for a while and get worried, the other mom can get in touch with her friend and track them. Once again, technology makes life better. Yay.
Last night’s plan (for the girls) was to get to the Grand Canyon in time to watch the sun set. I’m assuming they did, but with the 3-hour time difference, I won’t find out till later today. I do know after the Canyon, next stop is Vegas. It is reassuring that both girls are broke enough and frugal enough not to blow their bank accounts gambling, not to mention being under 21 and all (that is the age limit, right?)
Plans for today - I need to use my psychic power to figure out when FCD is going to want breakfast because I made the french toast casserole and it takes an hour to bake - I should probably start warming the oven once I post this. Other plans include finishing the laundry, and playing with clay. And that’s pretty much my day. Maybe running the vacuum - there’s way too much dog hair spread thither and yon on my carpets. So mostly, it should be a nice, no-pressure day.
It would be nicer if it was a long weekend. Oh well…
Breakfast was yummerrific - I used twice as many peaches this time as last. Laundry is done. Dishwasher is loaded and kitchen is tidy. Carpets have been vacuumed. I’m dressed in grubbies, about to descend to my studio for a few hours of playing with clay.
I tidied my side of the bedroom this AM, as well as washed dishes (I will have a dishwasher again on Wed noc), hung a clock, ate breakfast, fed #2 son, figured out where we want the Coolaroo (husband’s task to install), and realized that I have waaaay too much to do today.
For my own sanity:
hook up printer
set up web page (#1 son’s task)
water plants
read sample paper and look up WSIS (grad school stuff)
laundry
grocery store-if time (the kids ate yesterday)
hang a strip of wallpaper that got ripped down with the plasterers
organize kid’s files (files we keep their school work etc in)
Breakfast has been cooked and eaten. First load of laundry is in the washer. Breakfast at Wimbledon is over - time to do the dishes and start meal planning for the trip to the grocery store later.
I am feeling like a mental midget. I mailed back a DVD belonging to a co-worker to Netflix! Their site says “too bad” if you send them back one of your own DVDs. Bastards! I wrote them a pitiful email; I’ll let you know if it gets result.
Mowed the lawn, watered the plants, swept the garage, vacuumed the downstairs, and hung some little shades over the windows over the kitchen sink, and in the windows in the bay window in the kitchen.
Now I’m going to watch Italy and France battle out the OT.
My cats don’t get jealous when I’m on the computer, but if they hear me taking pictures, I’ll get mobbed. No vanity there at all, nope.
Well, MBG, you’ve prodded my memory - I need to water my houseplants. Now, can I post this and not forget that I have something to do??
My studio is clean. My works are drying - once they’re leather-hard, I can trim the bases and finish them. Dunno if I’ll get to that today or if I’ll have to cover them and trim another day.
The weekend can’t be almost over. It can’t! There’s got to be an anomoly in the space-time continuum!
I had a very pleasant surprise this afternoon. My sister, bil, niece and niece’s friend came for a visit. They had been in Valdosta, Jawja at Wild Adventures Theme Park. Sis called me about 10:30 a.m. to tell me they were coming through this way in about an hour. They came to the house and we went to Hooter’s for lunch. Why Hooter’s you ask? Well, the girls love it for some reason, plus I like their hot wings, so it was good. Niece’s friend got all the waitresses to sign her jeans. Yes, I said sign her jeans. She was wearing a pair of jeans with names written all over 'em. A rather interesting and odd fashion statement. Plus, they got Hooter’s keychains, so they were psyched. They’re fifteen, btw. Sis and bil are coming back down the last of the month for my bday pool party, which will actually occur on my birthday this year, since my birthday is being especially cooperative this year and being on a Saturday. Anyways, it was wunnerful to see 'em. I also talked to my mother. I caught her between social engagements. It is sometimes no mean feat to catch that woman at home. I should have my mom’s social life!
My next door neighbor died. Ok, I don’t know them all that well but this is a relatively young guy probably mid to late 30’s. I saw all those cars over there earlier and I thought perhaps they were havin’ a doin’s. Then another neighbor called me to tell me there was a purple ribbon tied on the mailbox. I don’t know about other places, but around here a purple ribbon tied on the mailbox means somebody died.
I’m in the process of making tater (N.O.T.) salad. I should run to the store and get one of those nice spiral cut hams, cause I ain’t fryin’ up chicken. It’s too hot. I’m also making up a couple gallons of sweet tea. The southern in me says I must do this and show up over there bearing food and offering condolences. I must. Hmmm… you know what! Ima go to the store and get that ham and some good heavy paper plates, plastic cups and dinnerware and napkins.
Wow, swampy, how sad! I’ve never heard of the purple ribbon thing, tho. Interesting.
I remembered to water my plants, including the ones in the planters on the porch (they’re under roof, so the rain doesn’t help them.) Something, I suspect squirrels, keeps digging into those planters. I need to do something…
I never heard of the purple ribbon either, but i’ts not the south 'round here. Does that make a difference?
About an hour ago, I sat down to watch the end of the Stupid Sox game, meaning to feed the cats as soon as it was over, then go sit in the sun and [del]read[/del] nap.
Stupid game’s now in the top of the 14th, Scarlett is none too happy about having to remind me it’s past the dinner hour. Won’t someone win this game so I can feed this poor kitty???
I told her if I feed her and the White Sox lose, I’d have to banish her to the basement. She just stared at me and yelled. Stupid cat.
We’re waiting for the Kid to return from work, so Sunday Dinner will be a late one tonight. I got some beans going in the slow cooker with my secret blend of molasses, ketchup and bacon; there’s some kabobs marinating, and we’ll finish with some roasted corn on the cob.
