How are you enjoying the weekend?

I am sipping Turkish coffee liberally laced with black sambuca, nibbling on 15 year old Tillamook white cheddar and listening to “Rocket Cottage” by Steeleye Span. The sun is out, the birds are singing and all is right with the world.

And you?

We installed the replacement engine room blowers in our boat. They work! YAY!!! Now we’re home just chillin’…

Baked to the gills. Don’t have to rip out any more fucking blackberries because the compost bin is overflowing and pickup is tomorrow. Strategically constructed a large potato salad couple days ago that’s exactly the right size for dinner tonight and tomorrow as well so tonight I finish off the ribs and tomorrow there’s a couple of them cute little hockey puck steaks with the bacon wrapped around. Calculating how much I need to drug the nervous dog to brace against the firework onslaught (although the Portland firework ban does appear to be having a salubrious effect–things have been a lot quieter this year, though rampant inflation might account for that) this evening. Little coffee flavored cookie wafers from the Asian supermarket. Cold brew coffee steeping. Debating watching some trashy tv. Appreciating the marine layer that keeps us from overheating. WTF is that noisy ass bird that’s taken residence in my maple tree?

So yeah, pretty good overall.

Got home Friday after spending a week on the Oregon coast. I have zero plans or chores this weekend, the only obligation is to have dinner with my elderly FIL tomorrow. While in Tillamook, my wife and I stopped at the Tillamook factory. Stocked up on some goodies while there including some of their aged cheese. Also picked up a couple made in Oregon spirits, Westward single malt and Broken Top single barrel bourbon. Found both at the Seaside Farmer’s Market last Wednesday. I opened the Westward last night, going to crack the Broken Top tonight.

[brief hijack]In case you didn’t already know (though you probably did), your Broken Top bourbon is likely named after this mountain in the Oregon Cascades:

It’s not far from my habitat and is worth seeing up close and personal, if you ever get the chance. That whole area is an amazing landscape[/brief hijack]

For me, this weekend is much like any other. Doing a little property maintenance, a little home maintenance, enjoying the pleasant temperatures (66F just now), figuring out a wine to have with dinner and tuning the guitar for a little practice session after.

What is it about that factory–I swear I can stand and watch the hypnotic cheese blocks whiz around the belts and machinery all damned day! Plus, cheese!

The whiskey is made in the town of Sisters, about 10 miles from the mountain. My wife and I will be down that way for a day next month. The gal that sold me the bourbon gave me an invite for a distillery tour, I will be visiting just for that.

What fun! Have a wonderful time.

Yes! And the workers occasionally look up and wave! I’ve only been there once but would love to go back–if they’ll let me in. I laughed immoderately over the Love Loaf, and people looked askance at me.

It’s a great weekend. I retired as of 2PM last Friday.

Drinking beer, eating a sandwich, reading on the Dope about another march through a downtown of white pride racist momma’s boys and trying to blow that shit off, and not hate my country.

Whaaaaaaaat??? Well heck, congratulations to you, sir! I think you win the weekend!

I am so happy for you. I know how much you were looking forward to it. Congratulations!! :confetti_ball:

Congrats Qadgop! I’m about 90 days away from that glorious moment myself. Enjoy this new chapter in your life.

Congrats QtM!

I spent the weekend getting my father’s ancient drift boat ready for a trip down the Willamette. We’ll put in this coming Thursday at Eugene and take out 80 miles and 6 days later at Independence. I’m stressed out because it’s been well over a decade since I’ve been on a river trip for this long and I always feel like I’m overpacking. This whole trip is chaperoning a group of boy scouts and that’s always chaotic. I’m looking forward to it but I’ll be glad when it’s over and, frankly, I think this will be my last season as a scout leader. A decade is enough.

Enjoying a beer, a Modelo Especial, and plan on having vegetarian Chinese food for dinner tomorrow. Might make tacos for lunch. Viva America!

Have been listening to seemingly my entire neighborhood set off fireworks the entire weekend. I’m in a heavily Hispanic/Latino immigrant community and they are very enthusiastic about fireworks. And freedom, I suppose . They generally don’t really seem to feel the need for an occasion to break out the fireworks, it’s a fairly regular occurrence on any given day around here, but when they do have an actual holiday to celebrate, they hold nothing back.

Technically fireworks are still quite illegal here but the cops don’t really give a shit.

Yard work. Fixing cars.

That’s pretty much all I do nowadays.

Congratulations! I retired May 6. I love retired life.

congratulations!

Sorry not to join in the general tenor of the thread, but I haven’t felt that way since November 2016, and based on events of the last two weeks, don’t expect to until at least two people in black robes have died or otherwise lost their jobs.

We have felt quite ambiguous about celebrating the Fourth, as well.

As for this weekend in particular, the good news was that I finally figured out why my barbecue grill hasn’t been working for several years (leak in a corrugated metal hose), but my first attempt at fixing the problem didn’t work. I’m going to try a temporary kludge on Monday morning that I hope will allow me to grill some burgers and dogs, and then work out the permanent fix after that.

Saturday I installed wall hangers in the garage that neatly organize all my new lawn tools, so that turned out nicely. But it’s quite a ways from “all’s right with the world,” sadly.

ETA: welcome to the world of retirement, QtM, and everyone else. I retired last fall, which would be a lot nicer if our funds hadn’t lost about 6% of their value over the last sixth months. I just realized the full magnitude of our losses on Friday, and I desperately hope that things are going to bounce back in the next few years as financial advisors always say they will. I’ll be talking to ours about rebalancing after the holiday. :grimacing:

ETAA: I’m usually much more upbeat and optimistic, really.
