Yes but future episodes will feature more flashbacks and flash forwards.
Last night’s episode was terrible. I’m not entirely sure I laughed at all, or even smiled. I guess they saved all the good writing for the premiere and are just going to phone it in until the end. I guess they don’t care if they hemorrhage viewers until then. They’re just going to Dexter the fuck out of this season, apparently.
The best thing I can say is that I didn’t find the episode too terribly offensive. Just boring and stupid.
It really was bad. I was practically cringing in my seat when Lily “froze” at the table when they were having drinks, and then Robin said something like, “And now Lily is frozen!” Oh my gawd, that just dropped on the floor and lay there like the big ol’ sack of shit it was. Yeha, bad, bad, bad. I’m pretty much committed to this show to the end of this season, but damn! Step it up, people!
I feel like the characters have all become caricatures of themselves this season, with the possible exception of Barney, who is actually showing a little personal growth. I can’t stop watching because we’re so damn close to the end, but I’m really hoping the writers up their game.
Barney is kind of a weird reversal of the usual sitcom pattern. Usually characters become more cartoonish as the show goes on and the writers keep trying to top themselves. Barney started out as a living cartoon and has gotten more normal (and less funny, IMHO) as the show progressed. (Marshall and Lily, OTOH, will probably not go to Italy or stay in NYC but end up institutionalized upstate somewhere).
Anyhoo, I kinda liked the last episode. I laughed at the Marshall pillow stuff, anyhow (“e-lawyered”). Not great, but still better then most of the episodes last season.
That’s what he said. “Ring bear”.
The best part is that Ted and Barney would haul the pillow around instead of just taking the iPad.
I can’t wait to see what William Zabka has in store for Ted, now that Ted is best man again.
Zabka is the best. Around.
At least in this episode we learned that the “suit guy” Barney mentioned earlier in the series is Tim Gunn.
Not a bad episode last night! The wedding gift plot line was pretty consistent with typical HIMYM jokes, utilized great use of flashbacks, and was continuity-consistent (did you notice Marshall’s shaved head coming back? or Sexy Pumpkin in the background*?). I thought the pizza delivery was a very “Ted” moment.
The Barney/Robin plotline was good, but James’ actions were far more douchey than I’d expect from that character.
*Speaking of which, that had to have been a Halloween from before Ted met her, right? Because he went as a hanging chad when he did, and continued to go as a hanging chad every year after. Or is there something else I’m missing?
Slutty Pumpkin and I didn’t catch it for long enough to notice if it was Katie Holmes or if they just got someone who looked like her.
It was her, but it seemed to be a digital composite. Unlikely that they’d bring her in for only half a second on screen.
That’s what I figured unless A)she was contractually obligated to it (and knew that something like this might happen) or B)She just happened to be in the area or working nearby so they asked her if she was up for it.
Of course if they actually had Katie Holmes on the set I can’t believe they wouldn’t have had her in a speaking part.
IIRC The Slutty Pumpkin had her back turned to us until she was revealed to be Katie. (By that I mean I thought there were other episodes with the Slutty Pumpkin not talking, but it wasn’t Katie yet)
We first heard about the Slutty Pumpkin in the first season, before Marshall and Lily were married. Looks like a continuity error.
I saw the “Ted gave the coffee maker” thing coming. Usually I don’t see the alternate-perspective moments, so it didn’t really work for me. Maybe if I hadn’t gone “Why is Ted being extra douchey about the coffee? Oh, he must have given them the maker”, I would have been like “So funny!” at the end.
I hated hated hated the Marshall bit extolling the virtues of the pizza. It ripped off his “playful little pickle” Amadeus/best burger too much. Callbacks are funny, but throwing in references for references’ sake is just more lazy writing. I can overlook Marshall forgetting the “Cut it out!” screaming pain he was in after all the Tantrum the first time we see him eating the pizza, but not the whole “it was just like when he ate the burger” business.
I took it as he was being so wrapped up about the wedding gift/thank you note that he missed the Pumpkin that year.
Future Ted is also a very unreliable narrator.
After Monday’s episode I think Robin and Barney deserve each other. Why take such pleasure in getting that ring from her future brother-in-law? And Barney’s telling his mom and brother that he’s going to stop seeing them was ultra-creepy.
Yeah, I’m not sure how that would be a continuity error.
Because at one point in the series, Ted mentioned that he went as a hanging chad every single year after first meeting Slutty Pumpkin in the hopes of running into her again.
I thought he gave up the hanging chad costume at some point.
Terrible episode. Thank God for DVR’s. I fast-forwarded all scenes with Barney and Robin.
I’m just looking for scenes involving Ted/Lily/Marshall and, more importantly, any new scenes with the Mother.
HIMYM is not a sitcom, but an 8-year old project or PhD research to see how long will fans continue to watch if they make the episodes worse and worse in the final season.
I expect that by the series finale all the characters will be flinging poo at each other.
